View Full Version : It's Official as of now: PS3 and Wii need good games

I was looking on Game Rankings.com and I wanted to see what systems have the most amount of good games and Wii and PS3 are seriously lacking. First off the Wii has only 15 games that are a 75% or higher, PS3 with 28, and Xbox 360 with 96. Honestly my Wii is collecting dust due to all the crappy ports and kiddy games. Metroid 3 is probably the only game right now that has made me play my Wii again. The PS3 is just full of buggy ports and needs some new original content. On the portable side the PSP is doing a bit better with 70 games that are 75% or higher and the DS with 58 games. The DS is really lacking original content as well. Right now Zelda is the only game that has made me play the thing on about 9 months. I really wish these companies would take advantage of the Wii and DS hardware and stop rushing things hoping the ideas will make them sell. I don't want this to turn into a fanboy war I just wanted to let you guys know what's up and let everyone share their opinion.

EDIT:
Just for old times sake I checked with the PS2, Xbox, and GC numbers it came down to the Xbox and PS2 having about the same (230) and the GC with only 162. That's a hell of a lot. Let's hope this new generation brings even more.

In a way I agree with you, but it all depends on everyone's personal tastes. I've thought the same thing but as time goes on things get better. I'm finding more and more games that I actually do want, although a handful of them are on more than one console.

Of course with time there will be more but it's sure taking it's sweet time. I want to play my Wii a lot. I want my Wii to be my primary console but it can't do to the lack of imagination these days. Same with my DS. I'm playing my 360 and PSP the most now...life is so cruel!

You know whats funny? This year the only games Ive actually bought are Wario Ware(traded it back in), Wii Play, TH project 8 for original xbox and The Bigs for Wii. Thats excluding the ps3/360 games I bought with that BB coupon and traded immedately. It has been an abysmal year for good releases, 2008 should be better. Lots of biggies coming out for all 3 systems.

Funnest and most played game of mine: Wii Sports.

You guys need to stop reading reviews by some moron who tells you your games suck and actually play those games and make up your own damn mind.

True say.

And anyway, if reviews were any indication of anything lately, going by review scores one might assume that we are having 4 Warcraft III's, 10 Diablo II's, 3 Fallout's and 8 Metal Gear Solid's coming out every year.

Using reviews to claim the quality of games on a system? Ya.. not really. I just play my games I want to play.

The early part of this generation in which we're still in? Can you say maaaaaaddddd overrated? I sure can....

Here are a few truths:

-A vast majority of the top selling titles in a year also rank 89% and above

-Videogame reviewers half the time over compensate for their reviews because they have an understanding of the difficulties of developing games.

-The ratio of good Nintendo published games to good 3rd party games on a Nintendo system will be like 5:1 any given year at least

Ok they aren't all like 100% fact but pretty damn close. I honestly think that journalist, myself included have sometimes overrated games.

I've heard that one many times before but I don't do it. If I did that I'd go broke and I'd be wasting a lot of time. If a game has an average of a 60% out of 30 reviews it's kind of obvious the game is bad. If the game has an average of a 90% out of 30 reviews its pretty obvious the game is good see my point? Alot of time I'll play a game before it's even reviewed.

You must not play many games then....

Well I never understood why people were quick to dismiss reviews like that either, but I still firmly believe that reviews overrate stuff far to often. The fact that there is no real standard for reviewing games is scary too. An example is that one game that might be a really good experience but only takes 8 hours gets a average of 97%. Another game, maybe not quite as original, but still very solid game, but endless hours of fun, gets a lower score because people are quick to compare it to the 100% completely story driven 8 hour game. If you ask me, both should have had the same exact score, that while the one game should have had points taken off for lack of originality, the other game should have had points taken off for being a $60 8 hour long game. It's very complicated.

A lot of this is your opinion. The only thing keeping me from my Wii is my PC.

@XboxEvolved- Give me a kick ass 6 hour game over a good 30 hour game any day. I hate long games.

Thank god you made it official man.

Now Sony and Nintendo can get some good games on their consoles, phew.

Halo 3 doesn't deserve a 9.7. At best its a 9 or 9.1 but that because of the bungie.net site features.

I agree, every review I've read of Halo 3 has griped about some aspect of the game, yet some still gave it a perfect 10. That just defies any kind of logic. If a game has a flaw, hype or whatever other reason should not mean it gets a perfect score. If it has flaws they need to be taken into account when scoring the game.

The all mighty has spoken. All hail Jason for rectifying all the reviews on the net. While we are at it, can we set the Twilight Princess reviews straight. They shouldn't be a 9.5 but more less a 8.5. Thank god for opinions.

About perfect 10's
Actually sometimes perfect 10's at a website can translate to this.

They go by whole numbers. 1-10 without any .5 or any decimals. A 9 to a 10 is a big difference and if there was only one minor flaw, then knocking it down one full score to a 9 isn't necessary. You have to go to their review standards and ethics. If they follow that review code of 1-10 with whole numbers, then disregard anything you just said about one flaw in a game.

X360 got a head start and early support from 3rd parties so getting good games and support for it is an easy thing. It also has the PC port advantage. Smart on MS part.

The PS3 and Wii had some issues that hampered the release of quality titles.

PS3:
Price and price - Unsure if enough people would buy the console to warrant game development vs X360 that already had a big install base.
Development difficulties and cost - New architecture takes time to learn and the cost of development was just as steep.

As the PS3 slowly builds and install base, the price comes down, the development curve lesson and dev costs are amortized/dropped, better games will hit.

Wii:
Unexpected success - Most games out in the first were in development before the system even launched so it was expected by publishers (except Ubisoft) to sell no better than GC .
Port-o-matic - Because of familiar architecture and blistering sales, publishers put the shovels into overdrive with $ signs in their eyes.

3rd parties were caught with their pants down and rushed to catch up. Now that entire dev teams or even companies have been established, we'll see bigger and more expensive projects starting next year.

Lol is this a joke you read reviews so you dont have to play bad games. Im not going to run out and rent/buy every game that has a good title. You have to do research on the game read reviews and play demos.

I think some people misunderstood what I said so here's a clarification.

Reviews are great for finding out what's in a game and what kind of gameplay it has and overall if it's a game you'll be interested in.

Where reviews fall short is by giving them some kind of score... based on what? Compared to which other games? For what kind of person is are these judgements being made?

I like being told what's in the game and the kind of things I can expect from it, after all, we all want to know what kind of gameplay is involved with Wii Sports and BioShock, but I don't see why I have to be told why one game is more valid as a game over the other.

If a game does have quite a few downsides to it, you can still convey that in the review... but I've played a lot of low to average scored games which have ended up being pretty damn good compared to some that are given high scores which seem to be overhyped just cause it's some kind of "hardcore gamer" game.

So while it's good to find out what a game has, in the end it's your own judgement as to whether that game fuckin' rocked which matters.

Still I'm gonna stick with reviews before I play them I don't wanna waste time and money. The only way to find out if a low scored game is good is play everyone made and I won't do that thanks.
