80GB PS3 up 960% in Sales! Halo 3 Lifts Xbox 360 Above Wii
- Quite a turn of events occurring within the games industry in the last 24 hours

What? The 80GB PS3. Had it
been the 40GB PS3 that was doing well for Sony we'd not be so surprised; but for the 80GB SKU that everyone's been running away from, because of its high price, to be up 960% in sales on Amazon.com's rank is very strange. Scary even for competitors Microsoft and Nintendo. Other news says that demand for Bungie's Halo 3 has lifted Xbox 360 sales past Nintendo’s Wii. Has something major happened that we haven't found out about yet...?

First things first. The most unexpected news of all, regarding sales figures for consoles of this generation, is of course the 80GB PS3 going up 960 percent in Amazon.com's sales rank - thanks ddps3.com. Not 300 percent, not 600 percent, but almost a frikkin’ 1000 percent. How is this possible? What could lift the PS3 – and most importantly, the expensive version – so high up in sales in the last 24 hours?

What? Has Halo 3 launched for it and we didn't know about it? Even if that were the case, the 80GB PS3 bundle is still packed with a copy of MotorSorm, so everything you're getting for the $499.99 is that and a SIXAXIS.

As for how Microsoft is doing with their respective machine, they owe everything to Bungie's FPS, Halo 3. According to thenewstribune.com, "Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 outsold Nintendo Co.’s Wii for the first time this year in September as surging demand for the software maker’s "Halo 3" title helped lift industry console sales."

The website mentions that N.Y.-based researcher NPD Group provided some information on Thursday according to which, "U.S. retailers sold 527,800 Xbox 360s, topping the Wii’s 501,000," also reporting that 119,400 Sony PlayStation 3s had been sold in stores, bringing total hardware sales to 124 percent.

Quite a turn of events, wouldn't you say? While we can all understand the Xbox 360's success, we'll keep our ears to the ground for more clarification on the huge demand of 80GB PS3s within the last 24 hours.

Just on Amazon, but it's certainly up everywhere else and that's always a good thing.

Obviously it's because:

a) the 80GB version just received a $100 price drop

b) people want it fearing that backwards-compatible consoles won't be available in the future

c) for $100 more than the 40GB, it comes with extras that justify the premium to some

and

d) Amazon's sales ranks fluctuate wildly, sometimes based on more modest sales trends than their numbers would indicate

I would think that 80GB - and soon 40GB - sales will stay strong for some time, but the numbers a month out from now vs in the immediate term will be the more useful figures for understanding where demand is.

I have noticed that online sales of the PS3 seem to be very respectable in comparison to over the counter sales. It is very common that we see the PS3 fluctuating towards the top on several occasions particularly through Amazon.

Perhaps it is simply that the internet sales are supported by a more knowledgeable consumer that is aware of what the PS3 is offering and what will be offered in the future.

""U.S. retailers sold 527,800 Xbox 360s, topping the Wii’s 501,000," also reporting that 119,400 Sony PlayStation 3s had been sold in stores"

So the PS3 has to increase its sale by 5000 % and it will reach XBOX360. LOL.

It's 500% but that would actually be about 600,000

More seriously, we could look at it like that :

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=All&cons2=PS3&reg2=All&cons3=X360&reg3=All&align=1&weekly=1

The PS3 is up and coming !! While others platforms are down.

Umm... 960% relative to what? If it's day to day it's not that impressive, but if it's a phenom that lasts for a week or a month then it would actually be something to talk about.

All this Amazon sales rank talk I hear on the internet is pretty ridiculous to be honest, the ranks seem like they fluctuate almost too often, seems to me that these sales ranks are measured pretty half bakedly just so they can have these crazy retarded numbers.

I know it's good news...

but we don't need one of these threads every time a few people buy a PS3 do we?

No offense Cliff, but you don't have to plz or show anyone anything about how PS3's doing...

people need to stop worrying about sales because as you can see "1" game can change a whole scenario for a console.

Or a price-drop;)

I agree for the most part Omni. I just want them to hit a good consistent week to week number, a boost when a price drop happens is nothing new. Now if it stays at this point, thats when I will give numbers like this more credit.

? Why would MS or Nintendo be scared well esp Microsoft they are probably partying after last months hardware and software sales.

The fact that everytime a PS3 sales increase has to be reported as a megaton news headline speaks volumes of the situation Sony is in.

I hope for their sake they can maintain it.

What's the lowest price for the PS3 80GB now? I need to buy one, and the price I find at a deal site is $500. Is it a good price?

If you buy a 60 GB model from Gamestop, you can get either Motorstorm, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Lair, or Genji for free though...

btw, let's not use Amazon daily sales ranks as indicators :-p

Weekly Total
DS 171,260 17,454,212
Wii 70,322 3,594,122
PS3 64,087 1,758,644
PS2 57,152 43,208,915
PSP 54,449 8,589,452
x360 37,303 3,791,899
GBA 2,286 19,536,528

Ps3 outsold x360 almost 2:1 last week in Europe. It would be interesting to see ps3's european sales this week when PES 2008 ps3 bundle hits the scene on 26th October ,2007 . x360 was outsold by all consoles in the market except GBA

Link (http://www.n4g.com/gaming/News-76604.aspx)

The 960% crap on Amazon is completely meaningless.

Now this is actually a sustained sales increase, albeit a very, very weak sustaining of only one week. This is for the week ending October 21st in Europe.

It would actually mean something if such a sales trend was maintained for a long period of time. It's good that Sony started the strategy now as the proximity to the holiday season may allow a good sales stretch to extend over top of expected boosts from holiday season sales.

P.S. Lair and Ratchet are scheduled to hit November 9th in Europe and Uncharted on December 7th according to VG's thread (http://forums.e-mpire.com/showthread.php?t=80265).

Oh yea, it also says the PES 2008 bundle hits Oct 26th in Europe, I should bold that.

Thanks for the post Curry, those are good numbers this week in Europe. I only get interested in PS3 sales numbers because more PS3 sales equal more publisher support, which means 'I' get more games.

PS3 outsells the 360 in UK by 2-to-1
Posted on October 23rd, 2007 at 05:52 EDT

Sony’s PlayStation 3 console is currently outselling the Xbox 360 by as much as 2-to-1 in the UK, as sales of the next-generation machine skyrocket following the release of the 40GB console and subsequent price cut for the 60GB model.

Total weekly PS3 sales for the week ended October 21 stood at 64,087, catching up to Nintendo’s Wii console, which sold 70,322 units sold.

Meanwhile, despite a spike in sales following the release of Halo 3 some weeks ago, Xbox 360 sales slumped to just 37,303, having been outsold by every system other than the aging Gameboy Advance.

The 40GB SKU will arrive in North American territories on November 2.

Yea those are the numbers I want to see...although sustained week in and week out. This is the price drop sku shuffle week so its to be expected, if numbers don't drop of I will be very impressed.

PS3 didn't outsell 360 2:1 in UK Cliff but in all of Europe in total.
If I remember correctly PS3 sold +/-16000 PS3 and 360 sold +/-15000 in the UK for the week.

Well its 10,000 away from a 2:1 ratio, but yes this is reports from all of Europe (although Im rather skeptical of VG Charts figures).

Impressive sales given the price drop and if they can keep up the momentum Sony would have a good chance of rapidly closing the European gap.

PS3 40GB sold out in advance at Amazon
Published: 3 hours ago; 9:01am PDT
by Marcus Lai

Sony Corp.'s new 40GB Playstation 3 sold out in advanced orders at retailer Amazon.com on Tues.

The new 40GB model, which includes a Blu-ray disc drive, built-in Wi-Fi, a wireless controller, and a copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray disc, will sell for $399 on Nov. 2.

Customers can opt to receive an e-mail alert when the product returns to availability.

Amazon began offering the product over the weekend following an announcement of the new product early last week.

The latest version lacks backwards compatibility found in previous models including the 20GB, 60GB, and limited compatibility in the 80GB.

Sony last week announced the 40GB SKU in addition to a price cut of the 80GB by $100 to $499. In July it price cut the 60GB SKU to $499, where it will remain until stock is depleted.

The new retail strategy will likely spike sales of the hardware, which held demand far below Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co.'s Wii in U.S. Sept. sales.

This week, Sony released the action title Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and card battle title Eye of Judgement.

The PS3 has sold about 1.85 million units to date in the U.S.

Amazon?

Seriously man, their rankings are wonky as hell.

I say the 4 MB N64 RAM pack in the top 10 yesterday. Must be the new hot product for the holidays, huh?

Hardware totals for the week ending Oct 20 (minus Japan for now):
DS - 309,191
Wii - 187,993
X360 - 163,892
PSP - 116,620
PS3 - 87,492

According to preliminary Japanese figures, DS will add 78k, PSP will add 64k, Wii will add 31k, PS3 will add 12k and X360 will 5k.

Big changes the next two weeks as numbers for the new SKU's come in and Mario Galaxy hits Japan next week.
