Confused by the four different models of PlayStation 3 on shelves? Game|Life is at your service with a helpful diagram. Find the features you want, then look at where the circles overlap, and that's the version of PlayStation 3 you want.
Yes, I did this because I made a joke about it earlier this morning (http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/10/buying-a-ps3-co.html) and realized that a Venn diagram would actually be pretty helpful. Did I leave anything out?http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/10/diagram-compari.html

As far as feature wise the original 60gig model available at NA - Japan launch was/is the best option.

The diagram is a bit misleading... the area for the b/c overlaps onto the 40GB model.

Because it does PS1 BC perhaps?

They should have left out the HDD size, and drawn clear line between the features...

I thought the 80GB model had backwards compatibility?

No it doesn't, look again.

Frosty look at the 40GB circle, theres no blue on the circle. But if you look at the 20GB, 60GB, and 80 GB. Theres blue in all three circles meaning they all have backwards compatibility.
And then I think that the blue mixed with the pink equals PSOne compatibility.
Ugh, I hope that makes sense, but I don't think it does. LOL

I think we can all learn something from this, and that's, just buy the best one so you don't have to scratch your head over this shit.

Why is limited backwards compatibility in the US the same as backwards compatibility for us in Europe.
I think that has been blown out of proportion a bit - unless I'm missing something.
They could have just labelled the colour by each hard drive size. That woulda been the easiest. Let's make our own!! ... .... ¬_¬ - You guys should make your own!!!

I thought this was supposed to be 4th-grade stuff.

People in America don't believe there is such a place as Europe or Asia. America is the only country that matters, so why should it ever matter what other people see. Oh yes, and I believe they all think Europe is spelled with a "y."

Yurope? I've never seen anyone do that spelling, but I live in Canada :-D

the most important thing to note is that every game that is being developed for the PS3 will play on ALL these SKUs... the only real problem is the lack of BC. to me there is only two SKUs: BC and PS3 only (SIMPLE)
Wow, I didn't know that the other models had limited or no backwards compatibility. I'm glad I got the 60GB model.

just the 40GB... there is no confusion
Either way, I'm still happy I got the 60GB. I would've been screwed without the wireless internet function and BC, would've turned my PS & PS2 collection into nothing more than a fancy bookshelf filler.

the wifi issue has almost gone now. the 20GB version has been phased out and only the last dregs are being sold at the moment... i can't vouch for the second hand market, but the numbers won't be that high and most of the people that purchase that won't probably be that bothered

20GB launch version ftw. I have been bumping up against the small HDD size for a while but only because I don't want the hassle of exchanging a bigger one. I'll do it eventually...
You can fit a PC hard drive can't you?

the circles should be the other way around. have the various features be the circles, then have the systems be where they intersect.

Not Yurope, but Yeraupe. Yes, I've actually seen that. Right up there with the people who think it's spelled "voul", think "ain't" and "willn't" are actually words, the moon is the planet closest to the sun (and that's why there's no gravity on the moon), cigarettes were shown to cause cancer in dolphins, and Australia was formerly part of the Roman Empire.

That would make for a very convoluted and weirdly shaped graph. The number of systems is much smaller than the number of features, so this is the most compact representation.

Yeah... like, "show me Europe on a map" stuff and such...
There was a questionaire at a "travelers expo" some time ago, where they asked Europeans, what countries bordered Germany (they mostly asked Germans btw) and they couldn't even put Switzerland or the Netherlands right for crying out loud... And Europe is supposed to have the best school system in the world^^
The best example I had was, when I chatted on ICQ with an american, that asked me, if we got streets or even cars and flowing water, and if Adolf Hitler is still in charge... I then just plainly asked, what country Mercedes Benz, BMW (Bayerische Motorwerke) or Volkswagen come from^^
This is sometimes REALLY embarrassing!!

Well, you have to look at it comparatively. :)
A very small minority of Americans even know how many states there are in the US let alone what they are. A very small minority even know that Canada borders the US (or even that there is a country called "Canada" and not "Canadia"). I don't think there are Europeans who'd believe that America won the French Revolution.

Oh sure, it's the hassle of copying all my mp3s back onto the new hdd that worries me. Even on a burned DVD the PS3 will take forever.

You could always get a external enclosure for the new HDD, then plug it into the USB port, then copy all of your MP3's directly to it. That, or you could just leave the old drive hooked up externally for your MP3's.
