View Full Version : Where does your old TV go?

i've put this here because it's the PS3 that will create the point i'm trying to make. hope you understand mods :)
with backward compatibility being removed from the 40GB PS3, it's sure to reduce the second hand market, with more people holding onto the PS2... i have noticed that in every podcast and every article, the one premise that is constantly put forward is that it may be inconvenient to keep swapping consoles when you want to play a PS2 title. but will it work this way?
there is another scenario that i don't think has been discussed at all: where does your old TV go? everyone will now be pushing for a HDTV, whether it's for HD channels, HD players or the PS3. i believe some will sell their TVs (mostly single people) though others will give their children the old TV for their bedrooms or a spare room.
so it follows that the PS2 could follow, leaving that space below your TV uncluttered, and also growing a market for new PS2 games consumers. no dusting off then, no sticking it in a drawer until wanted and no stagnation of the PS2 market...
these new PS2 consumers will eventually become PS brand aware and will probably consider an upgrade when they finally leave the nest and start a life of their own. remember a 12 year old will still consider buying a PS3 even at the age of 18 or 20... even beyond. this to me is the long term reason that PS2 compatibility has been removed from the 40GB PS3

All I have is my computer monitor, there is no other TV :susp:
I'll probably continue to play my PS3 on my monitor as I probably won't get an HD TV for a very long time, but I like it on my monitor anyway :):):)

I never claimed to be ;)
I do have CRTs btw (all family stuff), just not at uni, they are at home. When I said I am not getting an HDTV any time soon that really means my parents don't want to get one, but also I would not get one myself as I really have no purpose to spend that much money when I already have something on my desk to use the 1080p :)

Well, we have quite a big guest house in our garden, so the old tv went there, and the new 42" tv came into the living room.

the question is though: will the PS2 follow?

No more SDTVs in my home.
1080p Sammy in the living room
720p Panasonic in the bedroom
1920x1200 Dell in the library
My old tv went to my mother's house.

My old TV will go to the dump when I buy a new TV. It got blue edges last winter which is kinda anoying! :thumbl: Imaging watching Simpson and everyone are green.
The idea that the old TVs would go to children and result in a new market for the ps2 might be true to a degree. But atleast here in Sweden the PS2 is kinda on phase out. It's getting harder to find copys of good games since a lot of stores have stopped ordering new PS2 games and it will get worse.
I think Wii will benefit most of this since it get the most publicity and most kids dont wan't an old console. If you can buy a hdtv i think you will probably afford paying the extra money for the Wii instead of a PS2.

My old tvs all died (except the LCD projector, which I sold on EBay)^^
We still have 2 CRTs in house, which both belong to my brother... Since none of us (except me, to a certain degree) can receive HDTV, the others don't bother that much...
But still, CRTs have GREAT pictures!! Not one single HDTV can reach their picture and above all color quality (maybe Plasmas, but they die faster^^)

sold it :P replaced it with a HDtv
I got myself a HDTV just after getting my PS3. I was amazed by how much difference the HDTV makes, I thought it wouldn't really be that noticeable. How wrong I was!
I ended up giving my old 16" flat-screen SDTV to my cousin, she's expecting in about a month, so there isn't a lot she can really do except sit down and watch TV.

Should've given her the big tv^^ Poor pregnant women^^

Well her room is pretty damn small so the big TV would be a little too big. That's my excuse anyway :-D
Also, I gave it to her for free. I could've been really mean and got some cash for it. But I'm a nice person!!

I keep my old sdtv on the floor near my HDTV. We both like to laugh at it and poke fun at it when were bored. Sing songs like, "1080p, 1080p, 1080p, look at me!!!!! Cruel i know. I know no shame.
