New PS3 TV Ad Campaign+ Posted by Peter Dille // VP of Marketing, SCEA
Greetings PlayStation Nation!
Like all of you, I’ve been a big fan of our new blog - but until now, I’ve been staying behind the scenes. I’m excited to share my first post here and thought that our new advertising campaign for the PS3 would be of interest to everyone. In fact, the campaign is scheduled to break this weekend in conjunction with the introduction of the new 40GB PS3 here in North America. But as a reward for being some of our most loyal fans, I wanted to get this out to all of you first.
Last year, we launched the PS3 with a campaign that become known as the “White Room” and we received a strong reaction to those ads for being provocative and demonstrating the PS3’s power. With those technology messages now firmly embedded, we wanted to move beyond the “power” message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear. But we need to deliver that in a way that befits the PlayStation brand. And so, beyond the brilliant HD games that the PS3 delivers, you’ll also see a big focus behind the PS3’s Blu-ray movie capability and, for the first time, you’ll see a major focus behind the PLAYSTATION Network (did I mention online gaming is free on PS3??) and the exclusive gaming content available on the PLAYSTATION Store, as well as breakthrough services like Home. As Kim noted in her recent post, with so much brewing inside the PS3, the icons and characters of the PS3 world come to life in the vivid black onyx world of the PS3 and nearly burst out of its seams.
The spots feature some of our recent and highly anticipated first-party titles including Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Grand Turismo 5 Prologue, as well as upcoming third-party exclusives such as Haze from Ubisoft and Metal Gear Solid 4 from Konami. I recall seeing some comments on this blog recently lamenting why we weren’t making a bigger deal out of Metal Gear. Well, get ready for a steady diet, because Metal Gear Solid is the mother of all exclusives and we can’t wait for its release. But we’ll also feature other great PS3 games like Burnout Paradise, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, Assassin’s Creed, Madden NFL 08 and Time Crisis 4 rounding out the genre-defining titles and breadth of a lineup that you can only find on PLAYSTATION 3.
We’re kicking off the campaign in a big way with high-impact: 60 second spots (“Universe of Entertainment”) which feature PS3’s multi-functional capabilities and really kicks off the compelling and addictive nature of this campaign.
Take a look at them.

It's something else then just the ratchet trailer. You see a whole world coming out of the PS3 in black, like in the blog video is posted.
You just have to see it for yourself to actually believe it. Go to any ign ps3 news page and refresh that page a couple of times till you see the PS3 with a flower poping out of it. After a few seconds you get the option to click on either one of the games and then the PS3 itself pops out like a swiss army knife showing you the map and the trailer comes after it.

Let's be honest, the crack baby was made of fail.
I like these spots muuuuch better, and they're far more effective advertising.
You know, communicating to the consumer what the hell PS3 does/has.

well you know i personally don't care if commercial is effective.
i know everything about ps3 so i don't need commercial to comunicate me anything really.
i mean if i like commercial or not has nothing to do with how effective
advertising it make or how good is it comunicating to 'consumer'.
so maybe baby was a fail to sony but i don't really care.
yeah i am fanboy :)
and this 'song', 'music' is soo shitty :)
yeah but i understand that sony can't afford too weird commercials until they win everything ;)

there's a huge ad in manchester city center, like, wrapped round the side of a building. it says something like "feel the full force of HD movies & games for only £299" and there's a big picture of a kid on a trike with that "this is living" slogan in the corner. it's pretty cool.

Now that is where you advertise some R&CF and the blockbusters, just like they always have. That's totally Sony style, this is them starting to turn it on I think :):):)
If I get to watch the Raptors game today, I hope I'll see some ads on CBC!
Edit - Man, I am so excited to see a marketing blitz by Sony! Can't wait to see all the other cool ads, this one was fantastic! You can really tell they mean they are starting up by showing the price at the end. This is the PS3's starting time lol :P
And maybe masteratt can actually explain the logistics behind cryptic and off the wall TV advertising to start that Sony did for a year almost, instead of just saying it's good. I'm sure he's right, but it'd be nice to get the whole explanation :P

I'm not sure what you are asking?

After a brief change of PMs (must have been annoying for curry to try and explain :p), I understood curry was asking why the white rooms were good ads and ta-da comes the result that should have been posted a few posts ago :
White room ads were GREAT because anyone who is interested in PS3 went there and it did a great job of selling the ideology behind the PS3, with it's High-def explanation, Cell etc.
It told consumers WHAT PS3 is, how powerful it is etc and now they are showing HOW the PS3 works and how that power is used etc.
White ad were for people who were slightly curious, now is the time to draw in the outsider crowd in bit by bit by showing what the PS3 can do!
Let's go Sony!

Sony excited about new holiday campaign
Posted on November 3rd, 2007 at 16:54 EDT
With the launch of the $399 40GB PlayStation 3 in North America, Sony is projected to have a good holiday season with a potential turning point for the PS3 in terms of popularity and sales.
The new holiday campaign which recently kicked off takes a different approach from the previous campaigns that focused on power rather than other aspects. The new wave of ads shows off the PS3 the way it was meant to be shown with mention of Blu-ray, PSN and Home.
Peter Dille, Vice President and Marketing for SCEA had this to say in conjunction with the new campaign:
"... we wanted to move beyond the 'power' message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear. But we need to deliver that in a way that befits the PlayStation brand," Dille said. "And so, beyond the brilliant HD games that the PS3 delivers, you'll also see a big focus behind the PS3's Blu-ray movie capability and, for the first time, you'll see a major focus behind the PlayStation Network (did I mention online gaming is free on PS3??) and the exclusive gaming content available on the PlayStation Store, as well as breakthrough services like HOME."
Dille later pointed out that since the price drop of the 80GB PS3 to $499, the MotorStorm-bundled PS3 has shown great success in the market. He also mentioned that in addition to the two current television ads, more will come in the near future.
It does look like Sony is very confident and pleased with the current marketing of the PlayStation 3. Many would cite that Sony is a year behind, as this should have been their first concept back in November 2006 when the PS3 was released instead of the abstract “Crying Baby” ads. Either way, that is the past and it seems as if Sony is learning and is dedicated to make sure the broader market gets the message that the PlayStation 3 is here and ready to compete.

I didn't see cod4 having a ps3 chime , it ended with a nuclear explosion. Assassin's Creed did definitely had it which looked cool. I'm so glad that they are having this new approach in marketing then the this is living crap, its way better.

Adding the PS3 chime at the end of Assasin's Creed is a really good move. Don't want people to mistake that it's only coming out for the 360. The PS3 needs to be associate with all these great multi-platform games.

Exactly what masteratt said! Nice find btw cliffbo.
The first stage was the 'power' stage because the PS3 really wasn't ready to 'get out there' with the higher cost and only Resistance to carry it's weight.
Now with games and a far lower price they are moving forward and putting the Playstation 3 into a first gear blitz to attack the market. That is called knowing what you have, know what the things you have are capable of, what you should do with what you have and at what time.
this is the addvertising they should of been doing last year!
I'm so glad that they are having this new approach in marketing then the this is living crap, its way better.
Like what GTAce and masteratt said already, completely unnecessary last year simply because it would be undoable and not worth the money spent on advertising.
The PS3 simply didn't have the strength at the time to warrant such a full blast of a marketing blitz. 600 dollars and Resistance for 60 more is not any sort of prime time for the PS3. Now is the beginning of the PS3's blitz. Not when it launched, now.
I have never believed for a second that the PS3's time was in Q4 2006, or even first half 2007. Not even remotely close. Sony wanted to get out the gate simply to get out there. Their hand was forced a bit and they needed to respond, and they rightly did even if it was prematurely.
The birth of the Playstation 3 is definitely now, this holiday and coming year will tell us how strong the Playstation brand really is and give us a great gauge to predict how far it can go and how wide it can reach.
ye, the 'fullmoon' podcast spoke extensively about this advert. they wanted to concentrate on the characters of the game. if i recall they said that it was using in game assets
I believe some internet gamers have made serious mistakes. They think advertisements need to be 100% in game. But why? Because the internet, the minority of the eventual gaming population, thinks that is relevant.
But there is no proof whatsoever a 'real time/in game' scene is relevant for advertising purposes. I distinctly remember no realtime sequence for Lost Planet. Neither Halo 3. Neither Bioshock. Heavenly Sword? Certainly not. Even the first COD2 advert (that was taken down by government authorities over falsifying what the game actually is for whatever reason) was also completely FMV using no in-game assets whatsoever.
What is to show that a real time advertisement is more effective than the R&C adverts for the PS2 (experimenting weapons) or R&CF's pre-rendered TV spot?
Nothing. Pretty much nothing.
Real time sequences for advertisements seems to, in my opinion, have little relevance or any visible 'advantage' over a pre-rendered display. I personally think this approach gives a order of magnitude better chance to do whatever they want with the advertisements, just like you said, to focus on and draw the personality of the characters on the screen.

I believe SCEE has also started a new campaign, I could swear I saw cliffbo post it somewhere. It's possible they are still using the same slogan but I think it's unlikely for a newly funded marketing operation, especially since they too also, I think, said they are changing their focus in the same way SCEA is.

I saw it to but the interesting thing is there is no mention of the X360 version at all and the PS3 logo and sound play at the end like a Sony published game. They also mentioned the "Now starting at $399.99" bit at the end too.
This is much, much better advertising. They are showing the game in action with blaring rock music, etc... Exactly what they should have been doing from day one and not the artsy fartsy stuff.
This will help, I don't know how much but it will certainly help perception.

I haven't seen none of these vids since March in german television^^
The only ads I now see are mostly third party (Simpsons game etc.), which mostly then only feature Sony consoles at the end^^
And Blu Ray ads (Die Hard), which features a PS3 at the end (now only 399€^^)

first ?
second ? hmm i don't like it... it isn't weird enough.

Funny i've seen the COD4 commercial with the PS3 sound and "starting at $399" at the end a few times. Just like the Assasins Creed one. I guess Sony's really pushing for exposure now.

Which is a good thing. Sony gotta get the message out there that these games are also coming to the PS3 and not just the 360.

Yea thats definantly a good thing. They should've been pushing for exposure a while ago and now they're finally doing it.

the blog posted some more commercials with Burnout Paradise, WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008, Madden NFL 08, Time Crisis 4, Assassin’s Creed, Haze, and, what you’ve all been asking for … Metal Gear Solid 4 from Konami.

All that is nice and all.
But Metal Gear Solid 4 is better.
:evillaugh:
P.S. Glad to hear more news of Sony working the marketing muscle again, nice find :)
I guess ads for all of those will have the lovely, big Playstation 3 namesake at the end? :P
OMFG THEY ACTUALLY HAVE THE ADS!!! Watching MGS4's feverishly now...
OMFGOMFOMGOFMOMGOAMDGOAMSOGMASODFMAS THAT ADVERTISMENT IS ***KING SICK! *mouth foaming*
Ok maybe without the mouth foaming.. but it'd be really funny and possibly unhealthy if it were so.

These new adds are really good. The two in that link are way better than the previous ones from a couple weeks back and those were good in itself. Sony is at least doing the marketing right now. Hopefully for their sake sales pick up.

These were sweet, but I'm still seduced from the first set.

Has anybody seen any standalone ads for Uncharted?
Nope, I'm wondering what will happen about that too.
IIRC for Europe they have a 1 million dollar or pound budget for it's advertising.
Edit - I also heard Uncharted and R&CF were in a similar ad compilation, but I've only heard one person say that so I'm not sure.

These should hit PSN shortly once they get the legality settled.

Sony is going nuts in UK.
I don't watch much live TV (mostly recorded programmes) but for the...An hour maybe of TV I watched I saw PS3 only Assassin's Creed advert (twice!), Ratchet and Clank advert and PS3 only (well, and PSP) FIFA08 advert.
But unlike the US one it doesn't mention the new price but all these ads are pretty exciting.
And the only popular gaming show here (GamerTV) gave Uncharted 5/5 calling it "The best game we ever played".
So it's all looking up media wise for Sony :)
Well media that counts, internet might still dislike them but who cares.

Finally Sony is stepping up their marketing game...
I really like the new commercials and they convey the PS3 as a gaming platform first...

That was very cool KRA. Those are Sony's big games and I have not doubt there will be commerical just like that in the near future. In fact they should just use that one lol.

Nice, saw a 20-sec spot I think for Ratchet on Belgian TV. It wasn't the same as the one that is on gametrailers, but very cool nonetheless.
