I know the AC thread was closed, but it does not make sense to close an entire thread just because some idiots were arguing about trivial bullshit...
Back on Topic: I just ran into my first game freeze and I can officially say that really sucks...
Fortunately it was immediately after an auto save, but this game should not have been released if it crashes during gameplay. I put the blame equally on Sony and UbiSoft, because Sony could have failed the game during authorization testing. I would assume Sony discussed the game hiccups with Ubisoft and they knew a patch would resolve the issue and decided to release the game anyway for the holiday season. Sony has invested a lot of money joint marketing the game, because I don't believe I have seen a single commercial stating this game is available on the 360. I will more than likely stop playing this game until the patch is released...
Initial impressions:
To be honest after my first 3 assassinations I was starting to find the gameplay repetitive... :( Initially I was impressed by the visuals and combat, but you can definitely tell Ubi Montreal is not accustom to making sandbox/flowerbox titles. This game kind of felt like the first GTA title where you would hear repetitive comments and actions by the AI. I do have to admit the game does have some impressive moments visually when you are in town and see 50 plus people walking around doing their daily routines. I almost would have liked a more linear cinematic story driven primary campaign with the ability to break off and do side quest. I think the attempt to create "open" gameplay created somewhat mundane quest doing the same three to four actions in any order for each assassination.
Once again I'm about 3 to 4 hours into the game so things could pick up later in the game, but at this point I can understand some of the reviews...
*I still would not call this a bad game by any means, but it's definitely not GOTY material compared to other fall blockbuster titles released...*
Also, I would still recommend the game to PS3 owners, but considering other titles recently released you can take your time and wait for a potential price cut down the road.
BTW: I will give my usual review once I get around to completing the game.

Yeah, I too think Sony let this one slip. I have seen lots and lots of ads for this game (rather unusual for german television imho), all stating only the PS3 logo at the end... This means, Sony pays some bills on these ads.
The game looks good in gameplay, but what vexxed me was the gentrified and dreary looks of the cutscenes... I mean, the only noteworthy cutscenes are in the beginning (the tutorial sequences) and the end, after your last mark.
I really REALLY like sandbox games... The first thing I usually do is exploration. But this game makes it a bit hard to do so, as you are in constant "fear" of being attacked by guards. I mean, you enter the city blended in, after that you start freerunning... You take a wrong turn and jump off of a building and guess what, you get attacked by guards. Why is that? Once, I was inside a haystack and waited until the Animus reinitialized (you get anonymous). I accidentally pressed the freerun button and climbed ontop of the cart, where the hay was stacked. For THIS the guards tried to murder me! And that's what I found made the game experience a bit unnerving, because you where either constantly running from guards or you needed hours to get from A to B. Same goes for riding horses in the kingdom. Since when are speedlimits set up for horse... in the 12th century FGS!
The endgame story is nice, but the ending is so abrupt, it's not even funny anymore^^ Definately not Goty, but still a good rental!

And flowerbox! Hahahah! I've never heard that term before.
I'm only ever referring to GTA as that from now on. GTA is now a flowerbox game. :)

I've never really had that problem. A lot of the time you can just run past guards (not using the free-run button) Usually whenever I jump across buildings, miss one, and end up down at street level, the guards are like, "what the hell is that guy doing?" There's been occasions where they've attacked me, but counter kills are so easy that it's pretty easy to pick off a large number of guards without a problem.
I don't know if this has happened to anybody else, but sometimes you get a group of guards (like maybe 5 or 6), walking around together. Whenever I go near them, even while I'm blending sometimes, they'll attack.

At first, it is not that bad or annyoing... but later on, when 20 guards or what attack you and a usual fight takes 20 minutes, you just don't want to do it anymore, as the fighting is very unnerving. Later on, the guards also get alarmed more easily etc...
And to the second paragraph... Yes, this happened to me OFTEN...
What I found really ridiculous is, that when an insane guy punches you into a guard, they set out to kill YOU! WHAT THE HECK? Bad AI! Very bad AI indeed!

The Flowerbox BS was something I think one of the developers used to describe the game, because they thought sandbox did not correctly apply...
I guess the difference is Flowerbox is implying you progress the story at your own pace and order, but you are not free to do anything you want like a GTA/sandbox title.

I agree that I found it odd that anything out of the norm almost instigated an attack by the guards. I think it's a balancing issue with the AI, because it's ridiculous you can't gallop with the horse without being attacked by soldiers; I understand if you do a hit & run (lol), but even if you are careful it does not make a difference. I like many of the gameplay ideas like vigilantes and all, but it's just poorly executed from an AI perspective...
Assassin Creed just strikes me as a game that is brilliant at times and horrible at others. It will be interesting to see what happens with a sequel, because I think the team bit off more than they could chew with this new IP...
*It would be cool if they could pay for consulting from Rockstar...*;)

I must say that the sword fights are awesome.
Goddamn, it's so smooth and makes all fighters look sooooo last-gen.
It's really repetive, just needed little differences in missions and it would more enjoyable. I like AC very much.

Hmm, that's cool!
I think maybe sandbox implies that everything is the same, because it's just crapload of sand, kind of empty.
Flower box probably implies that it's full of all sorts of different stuff, different plants, variety in the makeup of the soil and all sorts of stuff!
That's so pwnage! I would never have thought about that if you didn't say this lol. :)
Flower Box games ftw!!!

I've gotten lazy last months, too much work at work to do to keep up.
So how many here own this game, is it really that much love/hate affair as the reviews say and is there enough bang for the buck?
edit: another game where the patches arrive very early, good and bad at the same time. Good that they recognize the problem, bad they didn't recognize it early enough = before the "going gold" deadline.
But thank goodness for the mandatory HDD.

Sony doesn't run Ubisoft QA, Sony doesn't fix the bugs Ubisoft QA finds, I'm not sure if Ubisoft would even let Sony do that, it's not really even Sony's responsibility to joint market the damn game, they're just doing it to get on the good side of Ubisoft. Ubisoft has ALWAYS been notorious for in-game bugs, they had a fatal, unfixable bug in POP2 at the end of the game in all three versions. Blame this on Ubisoft. It makes no sense whatsoever to pin this on Sony, releasing a buggy product is Ubisoft's fault and there's NO WAY Sony could have stop Ubisoft from releasing it without damaging the already bad relationship between the two.

I don't know, if I knew a game is a bug-ridden mess, as a fellow gamer, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, it's like POP2, I wouldn't tell people to play it because it's a buggy mess and no one should be subjected to that, even at bargain bin price there are still quality games that go greatest hits that are worthy of pick-up. No offense intended btw, but sometimes I buy a game and when I find it lacking I would probably find it hard to recommend it, like LAIR.

^ First off it's my understanding that Sony has to provide product approval before any title is officially released on the console.
*If this is an incorrect assumption someone school me on the process...* (CPI?)
I would assume Sony was aware of these issues, but decided to give the nod for a holiday release to advertise the game and drive holiday hardware sales. Also, none of the known issues with the game make it completely unplayable, but its unfortunate a patch has to be released to fix any fatal build errors...
I recommended the game, because the patch should resolve the freeze/crash issues that occurs occasionally not constantly. Plus, if you wait for the price to drop you will get the game with the patch at a discounted price. Assassin Creed is not a bad game, but it definitely did not live up to my expectations at this point. Once again I have spent limited time with the game so my impressions could improve after I complete the title.

I concur. I've had 3 crashes over my course of the play thru, no other bugs (beside a strange anim bug, when I rode the horse and swung my blade, Altair got stuck bend down^^ Looked strange, but it stopped when I swung the blade again) to speak of. I wouldn't recommend that anyone buys this game, but not because of bugs, but because I (I and nobody else has to agree with me, this is MY evaluation!!) think, it is a mediocre game, that ends very abruptly.
I have seen worse console games concerning bugs and last generation, we were not as fortuneous (sp?!?), because patches where nowhere to be seen. This is NOT an excuse to release buggy games, but it makes it less gamebreaking.

You're absolutely right about Sony's strict quality approval, they have been that way since day one.
I remember a developers blog from PS1 days where the author moaned about Sony returning his 'finished' code with a list of required additions (including adding a clicking noise when you press any button in the in-game menu).
Every piece of code (including patches) has to be first sent to Sony for assessment before it can be released.
Infinity wards forum was full of PS3 owners recently screaming for blood asking 'How come the PC version of CoD4 has had 3 patches already and PS3 not a single one?' The answer given by IW was 'the patch has been ready for awhile, we're just waiting for Sony to approve it'.
I've gotten lazy last months, too much work at work to do to keep up.

Definitley a love hate relationship with this game.
Personally i loved it and it was definitley worth every penny for me.
As stated in previous posts the game does have its problems but has far more positives than negatives.
Fighting is brilliant
Stealth could have have been used with a wider scope cause they made it a bit one dimensional unlike the Hitman games which have a wide scope of silent ways to kill and escape a level whereas Ubisoft want you to use stealth to kill a victim and fight your way out kind of blending stealth with fighting and escaping which was exhilerating for me anyways.
Even though some disagree the AI worked well within the rules set by the game and definitley best Sandbox or flowerbox if you prefer AI i have seen.
It can be improved upon in many ways though.
Story was absolutley brilliant essentially weaving two tales with one ending in satisfaction and the other setting up the sequels. The later probably the one being most criticised by reviewers. For me the riddled story left you to ponder what great things await the sequels. When i say riddles i mean riddles that have actually been solved on many other forums/gamesites so if you do dig into the game and finish it take a look at some other forums for the endings meaning. What makes the story so interesting is that it blends Ubisofts fictional story with some historical past events in our history and also some unexplained objects that have really been discovered, interesting books on these mysterious objects and above all that on some mysterious cultures from all over the world that existed in human history but also in mystery.
Again i would advise a rental to see if you like it cause it really does seam to be a love/hate relationship to me.

Some of the best graphics to date (imo).

Started it last night, I've pretty much done almost EVERYTHING in the poor district of Damascus, and am about to begin the first assassination. Luckily it only froze up on me once in Masyaf, and even then my rage was eased by the fact that it didn't lose track of all the flags I'd already collected.
My only complaint is I wish I could get a better hang of the combat system, I can usually hold my own (except against alert Templars >_< ), but it doesn't seem to involve much more than bashing on a guy until you get lucky enough to, as lali enjoys putting it, break his crane stance and land a hit. I know there are other moves to unlock (as the demotion early on demonstrates) so hopefully combo kills will return soon.

combat evolves considerably as you move further into the storyline
The combat was one of the better parts of the game (imo).
Its amazing that a new IP can sell almost 3 million copies in its first month and im glad it wasn't another new FPS IP. Im thinking that the next game might have something to do with ninja assassins.

I really enjoy the combat, I don't understand why some reviewers hated it so.
The best part, or the meat of the combat is holding down the R1 or Parry button, and doing counter hits. I've gotten into doing lots of counter hits, taking on a big group of guys with nothing but the hidden blade, not even using my sword or dagger. It's badass.

My only issue with the combat is that it didn't progress much in terms of new moves and weapons once you get counters and the main 3 weapons.

Havent had any issues with freezing, I am about 5 hours into the game. Software update must have resolved this. Love the game, free running, climbing, jumping, balancing is wicked cool, but frustrating at times if you dont have the left analog stick in the PERFECT position. Some of the comments from the AI do get repetative, beggars are annoying (if there arent any guards nearby, I just pull out my sword and they run away screaming) insane punching dudes are annoying- I had that problem, too, with them pushing me into a guard. Battle scenes are progressively getting more and more difficult, but prove satisfying. The controls, for the most part, are AMAZING! Very easy too pick up. Story line is decent... I LOVE climbing up to the towers and looking over the city; well done, looks good. I find that after I pass a save point, its fun to just go around with the hidden blade assasinating people if I am bored :P I highly recommend this game to anyone with a PS3 and some time to kill.

again, i'll reiterate...should've played this game before Uncharted. However, I payed $40 for the game and I think it's worth that. It's a cool game, but the story is just kinda lame as well as the combat system. Jumping from roof to roof is always cool tho, and the animations of Alistar is pretty amazing as well.

I hadn't touched this game in a few weeks, too. I'm not feeling it at all, and am actually kicking myself for not pulling out God Of War 2 from pre-order instead of this mess. This game has a serious lack of personality. I get sick of hearing bystanders use the same recycled comments about my free-running acrobatics. And I'm not sure I want to put in the hours to get my combat skills up. I still have to stick by IGN and 1up for nailing this game, because it's just so...average.:x But who knows? Maybe once I score my first assassin kill, I'll do a complete 180 for this baby.
If you're feeling like that before even killing the first target, the outlook isn't good.

But on the other hand, I didn't get any rep from it either (I couldn't care less though).
What strikes me odd are the "official" PC specs this port is supposed to need... Basically, you need a PC that runs Crysis on medium to high, but in the end, AC won't NEARLY look as good as Crysis^^

Interestingly, I was very vocal on why AC is NOT a triple A game, yet he didn't neg rep me, back then^^
But on the other hand, I didn't get any rep from it either (I couldn't care less though).
