Father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Honors Industry Legend Responsible for Video Game Console Explosion
2008 D.I.C.E. Summit

CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences® (AIAS), has named former President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Ken Kutaragi, the recipient of the coveted 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be bestowed at this year’s Interactive Achievement Awards® (IAA) ceremony on February 7 at Red Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in conjunction with the annual D.I.C.E. Summit 2008.

Recognized internationally as the “Father of PlayStation,” Kutaragi will be honored for revolutionizing the global in-home entertainment market with the creation and monstrous success of the PlayStation game console. The launch of the original PlayStation in 1994 made it the most popular gaming system of the era, resulting in a shipment of more than 100 million units worldwide.

“Ken Kutaragi’s passion, innovative thinking and business savvy sparked a monumental movement that was unstoppable,” said Joseph Olin, president, AIAS. “If it wasn’t for Ken and his concept of the original PlayStation, there wouldn’t be the billion dollar industry there is today. His contributions have clearly set new standards for developers, publishers and consumers worldwide.”

About Ken Kutaragi:

The “Father of PlayStation” launched his career in 1975 by joining Sony Corporation’s research lab, where he earned the reputation as an excellent problem solver and forward-thinking engineer. This same reputation was confirmed over the years by Kutaragi’s vision and foresight of the potential of computer entertainment. In the late 1980’s, he presented his idea to build new gaming technology. This landmark proposal to Sony allowed Kataragi to bring to the market in 1994, the original PlayStation.

Just five years later, in 1999, on the heels of the PlayStation launch success, Kutaragi was named president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. During his tenure as president, he spearheaded the release of the next-generation PlayStation 2, the best-selling in-home game system in history with more than 120 million units shipped worldwide.

Recognized for the success of PlayStation 2, TIME magazine named Kutaragi one of the 100 most influential people of 2004. During that same period, he was appointed executive deputy president of the Game Business Group and Broadband Network Company for Sony. Kutaragi briefly shifted his focus to handheld gaming and launched the PlayStation Portable (PSP), quickly followed by the next version of the popular home console, the PlayStation 3.

In June 2007, Kutaragi announced his official retirement from Sony after 30 years of service. He currently serves as honorary chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc., and senior technology advisor of Sony Corporation, where he applies his extensive technological knowledge and experience to continue to advance the future of technology.

“Ken Kutaragi is the smartest guy in the history of the video game business,” said Trip Hawkins, founder, Electronic Arts and AIAS Hall of Fame member. “Without Ken, there is no Sony PlayStation, and that is beyond comprehension.”

The first Lifetime Achievement Award was presented last year at the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards to honor those individuals who have devoted their lives to the advancement of the interactive entertainment industry. Recipients are recognized for their continued contributions that have significantly impacted the $25 billion video game industry.

Online registration for the D.I.C.E. Summit 2008 is open. Please visit www.dicesummit.org for more information and to register to attend the interactive entertainment industry event of the year.

The Interactive Achievement Awards can now be viewed live via webcast on GameSpot (www.gamespot.com). For the first time, game enthusiasts from anywhere in the world can be among industry insiders as the coveted Interactive Achievement Awards are presented to the geniuses and giants behind the most popular video games of the year.

There you go, but unfortunately in the same parties George Foreman didn't get awarded for his grill.

Yes, I really do appreciate Kutaragi as a character and a living legend and have always wondered why so many people keep on saying he's crazy/mad/whatever.

To other legends, finally started MGS1 today. Man it's a good game and smoothing does its job well, if I only had a HDTV, sigh.

What's your opinion you fortunate 1080P punks, does the PS3 upscaling do the job well with PS1/PS2 games? Guess I should start saving for a nice 1080P plasma.

He IS crazy/ mad/ whatever.
All geniuses are.

Who in their right mind hides from their boss how much the project he is running costs until AFTER it's finished? lol Which is what he's done with the PS3.
He built it THEN told the Sony CEO how expensive it is lol

Same with the PS, he 'secretly' worked on it before he proposed the idea so the boss had no choice but to take the risk lol.

I adore this man, that's all I care to say.
Awards do him no justice

We still love him though, because without him, the would be no "PlayStation."

The fact that Kuturagi no longer has the involvement in the PlayStation brand that he once did (or if he even has any at all for that matter) makes me wonder if the PS4's gonna feel as though it's been made with the same amount of passion as the PS1/2/3 or if it's just going to feel like the XBox/360: top console but built purely based on practicality.

Nah he said he made the 'blueprints' for PS4, 5 and 6(? i think he said 6 as well).

There have been hints that next few PSs are basically going to evolve around the Cell network anyway.

They didn't spend $80Billion$ to build that chip only to use it for one console.
I know it's also going to be in TVs and stuff soon but I'm sure Soy can evolve it enough to use with PS4 and 5 and etc.

And think how clever it is- Devs will already be used to it  So they can easily develop for PS4, 5 this we won't have to put up with 1 year of shitty launch games.

Not exactly...

He worked on the joint venture with Nintendo, which Ninty canceled only several days before the E3 (or CES) announcement was to take place... Sony had the choice to completely scrap the design, or to make a complete console out of it. Kutaragi then stepped in and said, he will take the risk, and Sonys boss took the plunge.

Interesting story really... There's a 3 or 4 part video on Youtube about the story of the PS1

Just YouTube it if interested, it's very interesting so you should be intersted :p

The guy deserves it, that's all. masteratt put it nicely, this guy did amazing things that led into even more amazing things.

I still love him too because he's the reason we all have Playstations...

He's awesome.

I think about that all the time too.

But luckily I think it will be based on the Cell technology again. RSX was designed by Nvidia and Sony and I see a partnership their again. I think the passion will spill over from the production of the PS3. They tried to do an insane amount with the PS3.

I do believe we won't see the same god like engineering practices for the PS4, but what the hardware needs is the streamliners now.

Like I said before, I would hazard a guess that the PS4 will use Cell derivatives. But more importantly, SCEWW makes the games and there is no lack of dreamers there.

What do you mean by feeders??

If you meant they sucked, boy are you on the money, I tried to get some of those hosers to help me capture some bases, but either no one listened, or 5-6 dudes would always get taken out by like 1-2 guys on the other team.

 yeah, I called them feeders because they were just feeding our team's score by being easy kills... I wanted to switch over to your team & help out because it just stopped being fun for a bit, but it wouldn't let me change teams :'(

Its funny that many of the losers who make fun of KK will never achieve a tiny fraction of what he has accomplished .. basically carrying Sony on his shoulders for awhile. Yes there have been some mistakes along the way, but u do not stick your neck into dangers way without incurring some injuries every now and then. But the success he has brought far outweighs the negatives. I love the fact that his vision extends beyond what he can usually accomplish .. reach for the stars and only settling for the moon is not bad. Better than taking the safe easy route.

^True say! He definitely brought Sony to another level and into an era of financial and popular bliss with the Playstation brand. :)

The big thing in my eyes is the He is thinking a good 10-12 yrs into the future. He sets things up in the present to have a positive effect FAR, FAR into the future.

I just read through that...

Man, what a cinderella story. Simple researcher to CEO of SCE, that's... wow.

Kutaragi's tangible achievements... PS1. PS2. PSP. PS3. Cell.

And what's more amazing is that it's all attributed to his skills as an engineer, and I guess his damn good ability to both envision something, and then even on top of that convey the idea for other people to get on board.... That's just badass.

The two have a lot in common. Trip Hawkins pioneered his own games console in the early 90's, the "3DO" (loved that machine) so I suppose that having had a go himself and failing, he knows how difficult it is first hand, and has all the more respect for KK's phenomenal achievements.

The 3DO was a great machine back then, but as Commodore, mismanagement and bad advertising plus high price killed off the system. I never saw it here in Germany (I "friend" of mine (rather an old classmate of my brother)) had one imported from the US. Need for Speed (actually an exclusive for it back then afaik) was killer!!

Need for Speed ruled on 3DO. My brothers mate had one and I used to 'hire' it from him. Unfortunately it was more expensive than a PS3 (they launched in the UK@ £479.00 back in 1993, a full 14 years earlier and £50.00 dearer than the PS3 at launch).

Kudos to you Ken-san. Lets just hope the person taking over can do half as good a job as you did.
