Do you love the earth? How about the PSP and PS3? Good, because your loves are one and the same. Sony is called the most green games manufacturer by environmental group Greenpeace. Sony scored an impressive 7.3 from the organization, making it the third most green company in the list. Compare that to Microsoft at 2.7 and Nintendo at a shocking 0. Sony fans certainly can be proud of their company's efforts to truly go green.
Read the full report here (http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/toxics/electronics/how-the-companies-line-up).
yeah ps3 is considered as expensive but then becasue of folding and this
we can be happy that our money actually makes something good not only for us :)
ps.
and first on the list is... Sony Ericsson :)

Actually, this is VERY good. There are many people who really look into this...
What I don't understand however is, that they did not look into how the consoles fare when they play (i.e. power usage, where the Wii, logically, has the edge).
I can now tell my mother, I bought the most environ. friendly console on the market^^ At least something!

it's a huge topic in Britain and doesn't look like going away in the future due to an increase in changeable weather and flooding, so yes, it is very good

Ranking criteria explained
The ranking criteria reflect the demands of the Toxic Tech campaign to the electronics companies. Our two demands are that companies should:
* clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances;
* takeback and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete.
Disclaimer: Our 'Guide to Greener Electronics' aims to clean up the electronics sector and get manufacturers to take responsibility for the full life cycle of their products, including the electronic waste that their products generate. The guide does not rank companies on labour standards, energy use or any other issues, but recognises that these are important in the production and use of electronics products.

Yeah but the energy the PS3 consumes shits on this straight away lol
Not to mention people leave it on for hours just to Fold thus using more resources.

yeah but fold is good and they improve energy thing with smaller chips/newer models.
it's not that they don't care some things just need energy.
and this list is about things that can be done but not everybody care the same :)
from energy perspective yeah it would be better to don't have for example consoles at all.
but that's not the point.

These smaller chips make their own way into 60/80GB models already at home do they?
Anyway I don't mean to make it sound like a bad thing it's just that if you are getting a praise for something which I think is pretty stupid, you should be able to also point out the other side of the argument that counters the whole thing.

6 million consoles out there that are already more environmentally friendly, due to rise to 100 million that are even more environmentally friendly... there is no counter argument. best is best, even if it's not perfect. perfection is another argument

My PS3 downsized itself, the Cell decided it wasn't efficient enough yesterday. It doesn't even have a cover anymore, it traps in too much heat apparently. I'm not even sure if my PS3 has a fan anymore :ohno:

I had to research for a documentary proposal on the subject of global warming. The hypothesis was 'What if current global warming is happening anyway (without human interference), and governments are simply building a multi-billion dollar industry for the sole purpose of generating revenue'?
There is a precedent for this, if you cast your mind back to the so called 'millenium bug', a whole multimillion dollar sub-industry was built around fixing the 'problem'. We were told by the government and various experts how serious the potential problem was and virtually everyone bought into it (some even predicted the end of civilisation and stocked up on years worth of provisions).
So what happened when everyone turned on their computers on 01/01/2000? Nothing. Even non-Y2k compliant computers worked fine.
One analyst recently stated that by 2030, the environmental and renewable energy inustries could turnover 30 billion dollars per year. Perhaps thats why George Bush changed his tune about the importance of environmental issues.

Don't even parallel the Y2K bug with global warming, that is a joke, and for another topic. Any 3/4 brained computer geek or even fool could tell you it didn't make any sense. The same cannot be said about global warming. Go to the World Affairs or something if you want to learn about it.

As I've researched the matter for several hundred hours during my degree project and interviewed several key authorities on both sides of the arguement, I'll give that site a miss thanks (I've already overdosed on the subject).
Anyhow, it was a hypothesis for a documentary, not necessarily my personal point of view. Its important for people to be aware of all possible angles on a story.

They have already significantly reduced the power consumption of the PS3, the 40GB uses much less power than the older models.

^^That's cool though for a research project. What major? Ecology?
I thought you were trying to say that global warming is equally as baseless as the Y2K thing and that was your opinion of the matter.

I'm in England, studying for a degree in Film and Television Production (It's all I study, so I guess you could call it my 'major', I think it's a very different system to yours).
edit- My personal opinion is somewhere in the middle. I know that the planet is at serious risk, and that we have to act now and change the way we do things radically, but can also see a lot of government agencies and private businesses gearing up for the next gold rush. Remember, renewable energy is set to eventually inherit the role currently taken by the multi-billion dollar oil industry, and a lot of people want to establish themselves as a big player early on.
I'm not saying its a bad thing, just that its ironic that mankinds' greed and lust for money may just be the thing that saves them afterall.

That's pretty cool, it seems a different system also. I even hear in Europe people get into med school after Gr. 12 or something? Or I'm thinking of something else.
Why was your research paper on Global Warming is what I'm wondering lol :P
Were you in a different program before or did your program allow you to choose between a lot of stuff to do a paper on?
FTP sound pretty cool, over here there's an MIT (Media Information and Technology) and an MTP (Media Theory and Production) so I wonder if they are similar. My roomate is in MTP, apparently it's a better version of media studies than MIT.

We mostly make documentaries, but are also allowed to make the occasional drama too. The rest of the course comprises of film theory, film studies, sound/camera/editing workshops and studying the specific roles and career opportunities in the film and television industries.
The research was part of a larger project. We had complete free reign to come up with any idea we wanted (for the first time ever), we then had to develop the concept to the point that it would be 'ready to roll' should it be commisioned. This involved intensive research and preliminary interviews, along with countless treatment and proposal papers. We then had to pitch the idea to some industry execs who graded our efforts.

Yes indeed, that's a fantastic point for Sony.
Maybe compagnies can use something similar to Folding@home to simulate the global warming or anything =p.
That could be great.

This was reported in Denmark today too, and the Danish article also showed the three 'latest-gen' market shares in Denmark (numbers from the Danish Consumer Electronics Magazine):
Nintendo Wii: 15 percent
Sony Playstation 3: 70 percent
Microsoft XBox 360: 15 percent
Denmark is Sony land :)

Don't you mean for "scientific research into whales", rather than "whaling" (OK, both may mean slaughtering thousands of edangered whales and selling the meat for food, but it's a distinction the Japanese like to make).

this is true of course! my doctor told me that if i carried on smoking at the rate i was i could be dead in three years, but he could have just been promoting a company that sells patches *lights three cigarettes and blows smoke at my kids*
just making a point there. i would agree that there are always opposite arguments to any question, but in a serious issue like global warming, even if i was 80% sure it wasn't happening, i would want something done in case i was wrong

The exercise (as far as I interpreted it) was more to do with creating controversy in order to sell the idea to a tv company and recieve a commission to make the programme. I couldn't therefore take a conventional viewpoint on the subject.
The problem is, when you spend several months building a convincing arguement for something, and haven't convinced yourself yet (at least a little), then you've failed.
