This news is great! Now The Hobbit wont suck and it will be great. Now we can see Smaug in all his glory. What a super piece of news to hear. I know that Sir Ian McKellen will be back for being Gandalf, he has confirmed that himself. But I really hope for continuities sake that they get Ian Holm back for playing Bilbo. The Mirkwood spider scene will be really kool too. I am so happy! :pinky:

I am a little wary about this idea of a sequel to the Hobbit, but Tolkien wrote enough notes and back story for all of Middle earth to write a few more novels. i hope his son is involved, he has carried the family torch very well as of the last few years.

Smaug is going to whoop mad butt, that's great to hear Jackson will be heading it.

I'm assuming this has an excessively awesomely large budget as well?

I enjoyed this book far more than any LOTR book or movie, I'm really glad we're getting a movie adaptation :)

I never read any of the books. Will it be better than any of the trilogy movies?

I liked it better then the Trilogy as well. It is less grand, but is more personal of a story. It is also much less dark and depressing. This is going to be so kool man!

Do you dislike the LOTR movies, then most likely not. If you did, then you might. Like them more? That depends on your personal tastes.

This took way too long to get settled.

Return of the King came out in 2003 and this doesn't even start filming until 2009.

Makes you cringe at the thought of how this might be a sign of how the WGA strike will go... :|

Newline owed Jackson around 100 million dollars. I would fight as long as I had to if I was him too. I blame Newline. They lied their thieving asses off about the case for the longest time. Then they got busted hiding evidence in the form of papers from the courts. Busted BIG TIME. Then they just admitted they had been lying to everyone. Then they just coughed up the cash they owed PJ.

That's great. This is the only one of those books I read, so it'd be neat to see it in movie form afterwards rather than for the first time like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A little late, but late's better than never.

The Hobbit is the favourtie book from my childhood. It was the second book of Tolkien's that I read, preceded only by Farmer Giles of Ham, which doesn't really count.
It's much better for the screen than The Lord of the Rings, primarily because the story is so much more singular (and better).
If this doesn't turn out to be good I may end up harming someone.

This is PJ were talking about here. He said in the in the link I posted that because the story is simpler, more personal, and just shorter that he is able to be much more true to th source material. he will do it with love and respect have no fears. I don't have any fears myself. He is the best fantasy director ever.

The events of the Hobbit could very well translate to a movie much better than the majority of the Lord of the Rings novels. In the Hobbit you have a large quest, the entrance of Gollum and the ring, a 5 army battle, a dragon, and plenty of "filler content" to keep the story moving along well.

This series has been marvelously recreated by Jackson to this point and Im sure he will deliver with The Hobbit.

New Hobbit movie, eh? The Lord of the Rings films were outstanding, so I can't wait to see it.

Jackson Explains 'Not' Directing THE HOBBIT

While the announcement yesterday caused a lot of fan relief, there's still the question on who's directing the two new HOBBIT films. A lot of fans have wondered why Peter Jackson himself isn't directing the project, instead serving as Executive Producer for the projects. Well, it didn't take long for Jackson's rep to explain the issue to Entertainment Weekly. Basically, Jackson feels that the fans have waited long enough for the film to get made and having him do it would mean that those fans would have to wait even longer, something he's not willing to do..Here's the official word from his camp...

While MGM and New Line want to keep Jackson's involvement in the film as broad as possible, hinting that he may take up both writing and directing responsibilities, Jackson's manager Ken Kamins told Hollywood Insider that Jackson won't be directing the films. "Peter won't be directing because he felt the fans have waited long enough for The Hobbit. It will take the better part of every day of the next four years to write, direct and produce two Hobbit films. Given his current obligations to both The Lovely Bones and Tintin, waiting for Peter, Fran, and Phillippa to write, direct and produce The Hobbit would require the fans wait even longer."

Some names that have been thrown out include; Sam Raimi, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron. New Line's Bob Shaye was quick to add that there is a short list of directors that they're looking into but no decisions have been made at this point. As a sidenote, Sam Raimi was offered the job and has expressed interest but said flat out that he wouldn't do it if Peter Jackson wasn't involved. Raimi has received his wish on that front now that the case is settled. New Line, MGM & Peter Jackson will begin planning the two films in early 2008.

I am sure that PJ will pick the right director for the job and that Newline will let him do so. I guess he has to many movies on his plate to take the time to direct the Hobbit and not have it come out ten years from now. What director would YOU like to see direct the Hobbit? I would like to see Ridley Scott to it. He directed "Legend" and that was a pretty good fantasy movie(minus Lord Xenu in tights). He also did "Blade Runner", my favorite movie of all time. That movie, even though it was Sci-Fi, had a good fantasy feel to it. Otherwise I guess Sam Raimi could to a good job. Guillermo del Toro also seems like a really good choice as he directed "Pan's Labyrinth". That movies was great. What do you guys think?

Well, I'd like Jackson to direct it but since that isn't going to happen... I think Guillermo del Toro could really make a great movie. Raimi has already said he's interested so he might be the top choice.

The 2 films of the Hobbit could be a total success or a horrible bomb. The story arch is very different, and from what I remember from the book there is no real true dilemma. I'm hoping for the best though and also hoping that Peter Jackson decides to change his mind and direct the film. God, seriously, if the rumor of Sam Raimi is true I'll be terribly pissed.

Hah, I'd like to see Raimi do it.
del Toro would make it pretty damn interesting, maybe a darker Hobbit!

Id like Guillermo to direct. Raimi has been good, but i really think del Torro would have a much better influence on the picture.

I hope they get a good screenplay writer. That is the most important element in a movie in my opinion because a great director can only do so much with a crap script.

Personally I hope that they leave all the singing/songs from the book in the movie. They just fit the tone of the story.

I love Ian Holm, but he's a bit too old for a younger Bilbo. How about Martin Freeman from the British Office? He's likable and seems to fit the Dominique Monaghan/Billy Boyd mold.

WOW! He even looks like a young Ian Holm. That is very kool. I look him up under IMDB as see what his history is.

EDIT: HOLY CRAP!!!! That guy has a list of projects he has worked on a mile long. He has been in many very kool movies. Man, he was in "Lock, Stock, and Two-Smoking Barrels" and "Shaun of The Dead." That is soooo kool!
