Sony's PSP saw a big boost in sales thanks to a recently-released red version of the portable console. Japanese market research firm Media Create reported that the PSP sold nearly double in the week ending December 16, moving 184,610 units over the previous week's figure of 91,481.

The jump in sales settles the PSP into the number two spot in Japan for the week. It still trails behind the Nintendo DS which sold 222,144, almost 54,000 units more than last week. Sony's PlayStation 3 sales rose over 25,000 to 63,720 units sold, and the Wii jumped 55,000 to a total of 170,558. The Xbox 360 was the only current-gen console to see a decline in sales, down 315 to a weekly count of 8,561.

One thing is for sure: new colors move units. Whether it's a special edition or just a general paint job, there is no better way to get consumers talking about a system, portable or otherwise, than by making it a new shiny color.

GO RED GO RED!!! I want one and apparently lots of people in Japan do to!! Man is that one pretty PSP. :pinky: Still behind the DS, but it is picking up steam and moving along really well.

PSP is sold out almost everywhere in NYC.

My friend wanted to buy a PSP for xmas present for his brother so we went shopping today.

Our local Circuit City and Target had sold out, then we went to the closest Toys R Us which was sold out as well, then to the local Gamestop and guess what sold out.

Then we went to the mall which the Gamestop there was sold out, the SonyStyle store was sold out and another videogame store sold out as well.

On the way back we stopped at a Best Buy which just happened to got their PSP shipments. They got view units in Black and Silver. Finally we found one...

And Final Fantasy VII crisis core is not even out... lol

Since my PSP got stolen I've been very tempted to pick up another one.
But not because of colour ¬_¬

How to be successful in Japan 101: Change the colour of your product.
Microsoft should release a red, pink and a blue X360 and they'll be on easy street.

Seriously though, great line up of games the PSP has.
Many more games I want to pick then PS3 at the moment even.
Syphon Filter, that Pursuit game, Beatz, Loco Roco, SOCOM and many more that I can't remember now.

I'm glad the PSP is doing great along with the PS2, feels like it's the only thing keeping Sony from nearing a flatline in the gaming market.

A flatline in the.. EEG or ECG masteratt? Hmm? :P

185 thousand in a week is mighty impressive when you're up against the DS; even if it all is the holidays and with a new colour.

And even with all that PS2 and PSP life (^).... still not much enjoying such an extravagant company with the most ambitious dogma and style being less than number one... yes this is about the PS3... I'm more than satisfied with the PS2 (like that needed to be said...) and the PSP.

To better days PS3, hope they are soon :P

People bag on PSP for low software sales (although I dont care to bother with what those numbers actually are) b/c of piracy. What I dont get is how that can be true. DS is shockingly the single easiest game console/handheld to pirate. I mean, all you need is the R4 cartridge and that's it .. whereas with PSP, dont u need to do all these firmware hacks and such? Anyways, with PSP, I've done my part in buying games and even a few UMD movies, but I use it a lot for taking my movies on commutes and roadtrips, and my music, and taking some pictures of my kids with me.
