View Full Version : CES 2008 Request Thread
Everyone,
I will be attending CES again this year and once again I'm asking you guys for any requests of things you'd like me to find out for ya. Doesn't have to be game related either. Wondering about the latest in digital home theater projectors? Mesmerized by cutting edge OLED displays? Let me know and I'll do my best to get a good picture and some impressions and information for you.

Oh man as for requests, try to sneak into press only rooms or something.
And I would want you to chase some NEW, BRAND NEW, never seen, a game that doesn't have 30 thousand threads in the PS3 section games and get some info on those.
Oh and thanks a lot man, much appreciated.

OLED was a HUGE draw last year. I wonder how much bigger Sony's been able to get them this year (11" + 27" last year). I'll be looking into digital photography and home theater projectors for my own curiosity as well.

Voodoo is owned by HP now, but they are still Voodoo (same for Alienware and their ownership by Dell).
When it comes to ATI/AMD (whatever), they have definitely screwed up with the 2007 year and completely handed the market over the Intel and Nvidia, but they haven't been counted out yet. If AMD gets their Phenom line up to snuff and the dual gpu video card technology running well then they will definitely be a contender again.
Fusion could possibly steal the market for AMD, but that won't see fruition until next year at the least (damn, I wonder if a fusion prototype will be displayed at CES?).

I know that some recent TVs already support those features and I've seen some in Hi Def shops, but if there's something better coming out or if these TVs will become cheaper anytime soon, I want to know.
Watched a Samsung the other day with 120Hz support and the picture was just off. They were showing a Blu Ray movie, most likely in 24fps, so maybe the TV was having a tough time converting it to 120Hz or something but the picture looked very unnatural.

I saw something weird a few weeks ago, but in the best possible sense: two different movies (Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and Superman Returns) on two different HDTVs (a 32" Philips and I didn't look at which brand the other one was), and they were... too fluent. I mean, they felt like they were 60 fps footage, and they were sharp too. I believe they were DVD movies, which was even more weird.
Then I saw a very impressive Panasonic Viera 1080p plasma coupled with a Blu-ray player. It was just like staring at people and the street through a window. Not a single compression artifact in sight, and that was real 60 fps too. I'm sure it was a showcase video, but wow.
I'm definitely going to try to find some information on native 2.4:1 home theater projectors. They're are none on the market now due to it being a niche aspect ratio, but the more anamorphic widescreen movies that come out that force home theater enthusiasts to purchase after market lens's to stretch the image, the more likely we are to see some native 2.4:1 projectors in the near future.
Any photographer's out there? I'm hoping to get a glimpse at the next generation of DSLR technology as well.

PS3 title LittleBigPlanet to sprout at CES 2008
Published: 2 hours ago; 10:25am PDT
by Marcus Lai
Sony Corp. next week will showcase game titles for the Playstation 3 computer entertainment system at CES 2008 in Las Vegas, NV, including the innovative offering LittleBigPlanet.
The official Sony CES 2008 website features LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and the Playstation Eye as products to be displayed at the annual consumer electronics show.
LittleBigPlanet was last displayed in July 2007 at the E3 Media & Business Summit 2007 in Santa Monica, CA.
The title will allow players to explore and solve puzzles, and share modified levels with Playstatin Network members.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is an action adventure title released in Nov. 2007. The title is an original IP that allows players to blast enemies and explore exotic locations.
The Playstation Eye is a USB camera peripheral launched with the title The Eye of Judgment in Oct. 2007. A software set called EyeCreate was released to the Playstation Network to allow users to create and share videos.
To date, PS3 sales have been lower-than-expected due to average game library and high retail cost. The hardware has shipped more than five million units worldwide compared to Nintendo Co.’s Wii at 13.2 million units and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 at 13.4 million units.
Sony in Oct. recorded a 96.7 billion yen loss in the game division that was offset by a quarterly profit from strong electronics sales.

Xbox Becoming Centerpiece Of The Digital Living Room
In a fierce competition with Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, Microsoft said it needed something new to set it apart.
By J. Nicholas Hoover
InformationWeek
January 7, 2008 01:00 PM
Think the Xbox is just for games? Think again. Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) announced at the Consumer Electronics Show on Sunday that the Xbox 360 is about to become your set top box and one-stop shopping for digital downloads.
During a keynote address on Sunday night, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Microsoft entertainment and device division president Robbie Bach announced that British Telecom would soon be offering consumers the choice of using their Xbox 360 as a set-top box for IPTV. Whispers of such a development were heard as early as last July's Financial Analyst Meeting, though details and confirmation were scarce at that time.
Microsoft also said that the Xbox would bolster its position in the digital downloads game, announcing deals with ABC and Disney to distribute high-definition content on the $350 console. That means Hannah Montana fans and people looking to watch the ABC evening shows they missed can watch directly from their Xboxes. MGM, meanwhile, is bringing its library of films to the console. Microsoft first announced digital downloads would come to Xbox in late 2006.
"Xbox Live, when we're done integrating this content, will offer more than twice as many hours of on-demand, high definition content as any cable or satellite provider," Bach said.
In a fierce competition where the PlayStation 3 has gained accolades for its high performance and superior graphics and where Nintendo's Wii has revolutionized the use of gestures for games, Microsoft needed something new to set it apart from the other two. It got that in these announcements, which make the Xbox as much a central part of the digital living room as a gaming device.
Not that the Xbox 360 was suffering too much from a competitive standpoint. Bach announced that Microsoft has shipped 17.7 million Xboxes to date, doing $3.5 billion last year in sales through November. That number constitutes a billion more than the Wii, its closest competitor. The downloads will be distributed through Xbox Live, a service Microsoft says has 10 million users today.
it was actually announced earlier than this, but here is one announcement and there are many more:
PLAYTV UNLOCKS FREE DIGITAL TV ON PLAYSTATION 3
Leipzig, 22 August 2007. At Games Convention today, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced the introduction of PlayTV, a combined TV tuner and Personal Video Recorder (PVR) for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™). PlayTV will be available in UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain early in 2008, with other PAL territories to follow in due course.
Designed to reinforce PS3’s rightful place in the Living Room at the heart of the home entertainment needs, the twin channel TV tuner peripheral and PVR software turns PS3 into a state of the art TV recorder, allowing users to watch, pause and record live TV. PlayTV will also record individual programmes or whole series1 to the PS3 hard drive for viewing later on the family TV, or for transferring to the PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) for remote viewing outside of the home.
Operating on the widely available Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) format, PlayTV uses an incredibly quick and easy to use 7-day Electronic Programme Guide EPG2. that provides the navigation for programming the PVR features of PlayTV.
In line with PlayStation’s focus on advanced technology made easy, PlayTV provides a host of added value features seldom seen on anything but the highest cost standalone PVRs:
· PlayTV’s two TV tuners are High Definition ready and are able to view, record and play back High Definition signals in full HD1080P to fully complement PS3’s already impressive High Definition credentials.
· Unlike the electronic programme guides found on conventional satellite and cable services, PlayTV’s EPG is lightning fast, and simple to use with either PS3’s SIXAXIS™ wireless controller or the BD remote control to really enhance viewing pleasure.
· Intuitive controls, single button help features, tutorial videos and simple navigation make PlayTV a positive joy to use compared with the complexity of some standalone PVR models
· Seamless connectivity with PSP allows you to set recordings, watch Live TV and recorded TV programmes remotely on PSP via a Wi-Fi connection (using Remote Play feature). Alternatively, quickly transcode recorded TV shows for high quality viewing to PSP by USB cable for remote viewing away from the home.
· Optional on-screen graphical display provides a wealth of information about the status of PlayTV and provides quick access to programme information, stored TV programmes and the controls to pause or record live TV. PlayTV will also set the correct interface for either Standard Definition or High Definition displays, maximising the viewing experience.
· PlayTV will evolve with time, with great added value functionality being updated via PLAYSTATION®Network; a feature that sets it above all other set top boxes. PlayTV will never be out of date.
“The introduction of PlayTV really will extend the already broad entertainment credentials of PS3, and makes it an exceptionally attractive proposition for the whole family,” said David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “PS3 already provides High Definition gaming, Blu-ray Disc movies, music, video, photo album, web browsing and PLAYSTATION Network support. With the introduction of PlayTV’s state of the art TV tuner and PVR functionality, PS3 is now the best choice of home entertainment hub for the whole family.

I dont know thats a tough decision on who did what first. I would say that the concept of a "console" as a living room centerpiece originated with Sony, but MS was first in bringing many features.
I seriously doubt it will ever be an instance of "Sony copied", or anything along those lines.
There was some decent coverage in USA Today about Sony at CES.

from the Blu-Ray Interactivity Demo at CES:
11:52 - VP of ad Don Eckland takes the stage and joins the panel. Says that 2008 will take it to a new level because the network connection and make it a more powerful device. Will be able to trigger ringtone from disc to a phone. Portable copy will be included for PS3 on a disc and games. Don waits, Leonard makes jokes about replicating. They are sending a Godzilla ring tone to a "shills" mobile phone -- Leonard knows all the lingo. Now they are coping to a PS3, but Don seems to have forgot the password. They are welcoming everyone on sprint or Verizon to come get a Godzilla ring tone afterwards.
11:57 - Now we are all watching the clip on a PS3. And now for the interactive Men In Black trivia game. Players can be anywhere, using a network. They can also create chat applications -- where have we heard that before? Both of the volunteers for the demo received a signed copy of the Patriot.
12:04pm - Danny Kaye VP of Fox takes the stage. They're trying to merge BD-J with social networking and other online interactivity. Says that they also own MySpace and it could be really big with BD Live. Can store interactive activity and relive it again, or create custom trailers for friends. Now we are going to insert ourselves into Alien Vs Predator. So after we get a photo we are going to choose our role and skills, so we can interact with others through the film, in a role playing game. Now we're watching the demo of Alien Vs. Predator Vs. You -- looks cool, but wonder how much fun it will be with a remote. "The future is blu, the future is BD Live." The whole idea is to extend the movie experience from two hours to 10 more more hours of fun.
12:12pm - Ron Schwartz from Lionsgate takes the stage. We are going to be invited into a commentary of SAW 4. now everyone can engage in the conversation. Now we are watching Molog, or movie log, that allows us to interact. Demo isn't going so great, they can seem to sign in - again. Leonard starts talking up SAW 4 to help pass the time. Now we can finally see what the box looks like, but we're not sure how they can enter data so fast with that remote, the comments are just flying. This is a commercial ready disc available in two weeks.
12:19PM - Don comes back on the stage to wrap things up with a surprise. Now they are downloading a HD video from online featuring Will Smith. Can download new trailers or other new features for the disc. Will looks good in HD and talks up his new movies, as well as Men In Black on Blu-ray.

I seriously doubt it will ever be an instance of "Sony copied", or anything along those lines.
There was some decent coverage in USA Today about Sony at CES.
don't get me wrong, i watched the MS conference and thought they did a fantastic job... I just immediately saw into future posts lol

Whoa -- DiNovo Mini has a hidden PS3 compatibility switch

We actually didn't catch this when we toyed around with Logitech's DiNovo Mini the other night, but the eagle-eyed team from Engadget Chinese just pointed out that there's a switch inside that allows you to select between PC and PS3 modes. We're not 100 percent on what it switches around -- it's Bluetooth either way, after all -- but we're assuming some of the function keys get remapped. Pretty hot -- and definitely less dorky than the absurd-but-ridiculous 360 Chatpad.

Sony Demos Copying From Blu-ray Disc
The concept of copying a lower-resolution version of a film from a packaged media disc to a portable device is not new--in fact, late last year, Fox and Warner released the first standard definition titles to offer this capability (on Live Free, Die Hard and Harry Potter: The Order of the Phoenix, respectively).
Sony today demonstrated the next level of disc copying. At the company's booth at CES, Sony demonstrated how you could put a Blu-ray Disc movie into a Playstation 3 and copy the film to a Playstation Portable or a Memory Stick. "This way, you can have a portable copy you can take with you," explains David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
"There was always the promise of greater interactivity. You'll see that coming in the new year," Bishop added. In addition to the PSP copying example, Sony also demonstrated how you could download ring tones and new content to a BD Live player, using Men in Black as the example.
BD Live is proving to be a big catchphrase at the show: Panasonic announced its BD Live player yesterday, Fox showcased an early version of its Alien vs. Predator multiplayer game at the Blu-ray Disc Association's booth, and Sony showed its interactive Men in Black trivia game. The game was being played by two people in two locations on a Playstation 3.

Sony reveals new details for BD-Live Interactivity.
Sony kicked off its CES conference today with some big news highlighting several planned BD-Live interactive features coming to Blu-ray in 2008. During an interactive demo on the show floor, Sony revealed a series of interactive features currently planned for the BD-Live networking capabilities.
The first feature previewed was one that would allow viewers to send ringtones to their personal mobile phones, including content from the movie itself. Viewers could extract lines of dialogue from the movie or other audio clips.
More excitingly revealed was that Sony is planning select Blu-ray title that will include a version of the film encoded for the PSP, thus making the film portable. However, Sony didn't announce a planned release date or titles that will include this new feature.
Stay tuned for more details on this hot new development.

Impressions: (Photos Soon)
Sony:
The main draw at the Sony booth was again the OLEDs. They had the both the 11" and the 27" back from last years show albeit in a finalized form factor that's being used for the production model for sale now ($2500 for 11").
Another Sony hotspot was it AMAZING 4k x 2k 82" Bravia. This thing was incredible. Gorgeous picture showing a mix of 4 simultaneous 1080p feeds as well as mind blowing 2160p feeds.
Seated directly next to the Bravia was a 62" LCD running the MGS4 Demo. I said the MGS4 Demo. I nearly shit my pants. I didn't have to wait long to play, I was the next one in line when I walked up. What can I say? This game is INCREDIBLE. The first two things that really caught my attention was the lighting (sunlight looked like sunlight, shade looked like shade) and the sound. The demo had about 5 guns you could use and each one had a distinct sound to it that sounded truly authentic and visceral. After a quick tutorial from the Konami rep (who interestingly told me that the game was due Q2 2008 and that they were targeting 1080p), I got to finally play. It was the same level from the TGS. I was able to switch from auto-aim to manual-aim modes easily. Killed a few guys and picked them up to try an shake some ammo out of them. Noticed that the bodies reacted realistically to the objects around them when they died (falling body hitting a car hood with ragdoll physics). Otocamo was cool, works automatically just by coming into contact with a surface. Noticed it was a little difficult for me to take cover against a wall. I was used to playing Drake and just running up to a wall, pressing a button, and watching him stick to the wall. Snake was giving me some attitude in this department. Threw a couple grenades and watched enemies roll around on the ground on fire. This game is going to sell millions. From what I say it pretty well polished (especially in the visual department). I couldn't help but imaging what kind of epic boss battles this game has in store with this graphics/physics engine.
DLP:
Mainly showing off their new 3-D television technology. Claiming they're DLP chips are now fast enough to show two images essentially at once that can create a 3D image. Glasses required but the Beowulf trailer and Madden 2008 I watched looked promising.
Sharp:
These guys are basically one-uppers ever year trying to make the largest display possible. This year was no exception. They had the world's largest "Ultra High Definition" (4k x 2k) panel at 110". Gorgeous display. They also had something they're calling "Aquos Wall" which was basically a 100" LCD in wall touch screen unit. Very cool.
Panasonic:
They're claim to fame this year was the gargantuan 150" Plasma. Huge TV, what more is there to say?
Samsung:
They had a large crowd around their OLED showing this year. They rolled out an 11" and a 31". Unfortunately they were unable to tell me any technical details of the units as of right now, so I couldn't compare them to Sony's. They also have a new technology coming called "Touch Of Color" or TOC for short. Basically, its a dynamic color reproduction system used to drastically increase the number of available colors. Looks promising.
The main theme of this years show, other than "lets make it bigger", was definitely the OLEDs and the Ultra High Def displays. Both were highly talked about this year. IMO, OLED is going to be the first to penetrate the market significantly due to the fact that manufacturers have begun making it cheaper and longer lasting then ever before. Not to mention the the fact the technology beats everything else in every way. The "UHD" displays were very cool but IMO are still a long way off. Were only now beginning to see mainstream adoption of 720p and 1080i content on a large scale so you probably won't see these resolution guzzling beasts outside of trade shows anytime soon.

Oh, and MGS 4 just sounds incredible!I did. They look great. My favorite was of course the 82" Ultra High Def Unit. All the major manufacturers had 120Hz units. They were running demo loops that showed the advantages of a true 120Hz engine, such as smoother panning and motion in sports. I didn't have a chance to ask how well it works with true 24fps Blu Ray content since that was one of my concerns. HD-DVD was all but dead at the show by the way. It took every once of will power not to ask an HD-DVD rep what it must feel like to know you'll be obsolete soon. Lol.

Well... we've had SOME confirmation this morning of the details of the Financial Times story from last night. While the studio isn't yet commenting, reliable industry sources are telling us that Paramount is indeed preparing to end their HD-DVD support and announce a return to the Blu-ray fold. Details are currently being finalized, and an announcement is expected as soon as they're complete. Paramount's first new Blu-rays will almost certainly include many of those titles that were cancelled last year, but that were already packaged and ready for shipping, so you could see them in stores very quickly once the studio announces.
Meanwhile, sources are telling us that Universal has also been talking with the BDA, and is looking to follow Paramount and Warner's lead as soon as possible.
On a related note, Times Online in the U.K. is now reporting that as many as 20 additional firms currently backing HD-DVD are also considering defection in the wake of Warner's Friday announcement, including Fujitsu, Lenovo, Kenwood and Pony Canyon (which is a major Japanese film and music studio).
What's more, word is starting to circulate at CES that major big box retailers will begin winding down in-store support for HD-DVD as soon as these studios go public with their decisions. We're told that the industry's major retail partners are already pressuring Paramount, DreamWorks and Universal to go Blu following Warner's decision.
Rumors are also beginning to circulate here that Apple's Steve Jobs may announce the addition of Blu-ray Disc drives to their Mac desktop lineup at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco.
We would caution you to keep in mind that all of this should be considered unofficial until the studios make their actual announcements. Things are moving very fast, and the situation is highly fluid. Still, it really looks like this is the end for HD-DVD, and the end of the format war overall. We'll keep you up to date with new developments as they break.

Saw this a B3d. This doesnt relate to Sony although it is a damn fine idea and "cool" innovation.
http://gear.ign.com/articles/844/844258p1.html
Texas Instruments / DLP has a huge booth, and in addition to the unveil of the newest DarkChip4 engine (which provides a rather striking contrast-ratio improvement) the company is also showing of something entirely new in the HDTV space. Dubbed DualView, the technology essentially allows a single DLP HDTV to display two full screen video sources at the same time. By wearing a pair of electronic glasses viewers are able to select which of the two ongoing video sources they'd like to watch, allowing, for example, one viewer to get some Xbox 360 action on, while another flips through TV stations. DLP is also keen to point out the dedicated gaming possibilities, such as players going head to head in a system link situation on a single TV without being able to peek at each other's screens
I doubt it will ever take off, but good to see some headway being made with DLP tech.

I'm not betting on Paramount to drop HD-DVD because they've got so big an incentive behind it at the moment. And because they are one of the few HD-DVD supporters they are surely keeping the business going for some time.

PS3 to get in-game XMB access in 2008
Posted on January 8th, 2008 at 22:27 EDT
There wasn’t a very strong showing from Sony’s gaming division at CES 2008. Of course, this was expected; however, this didn’t stop Paul Purdy from announcing a much awaited confirmation for PS3 users world-wide.
Paul has gone on record stating that the PlayStation 3’s Xcross Media Bar will have in-game access sometime this year. When asked if he had a more specific time frame, Paul decided that information was enough.
Sony fans have watched their counterparts enjoy custom soundtracks and messaging in-game for a couple of years now. It’s only a matter of time until the leveler is set and the scale starts tilting in the opposite direction.

Blu-Ray Disc sales surpass 1 Million in Europe
Blu-ray disc accounts for 73% of High Definition discs sold -
LONDON – (27 November, 2007) –Total Blu-ray Disc movie sales across Europe have topped one million units, it was announced today by the Blu-ray Disc Association European Promotions Committee. Of the High Definition movie discs bought by consumers year-to-date in Europe, 73% were in the Blu-ray Disc format and 27% were HD DVD, according to sales data provided by Media Control Gfk International.*
The only High Definition packaged media universally supported by the film, music, gaming and computer industries, BD is the #1 selling High Definition packaged media. The one million sales figure relates to movies: if BD game disc production is added into the equation then total number of discs produced for sale in Europe already exceeds 21 million units. The so-called ‘PlayStation effect’ is important since it is creating major economies of scale and makes BD disc replication cost effective.
Blu-ray Disc movie sales experienced their highest weekly sales since the inception of the format, in week 44, topping 66,000 units. * This is due to the launch of new release titles such as 300, Spider-Man 3, Die Hard 4.0 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End releasing in some markets.
“This is an important milestone for Blu-ray Disc in Europe and proves once again that whenever consumers have the choice they decide overwhelmingly in favour of BD,” stated Frank Simonis, Chairman of the Blu-ray Disc European Promotions Committee. “Early indicators show that the Christmas holiday season will be exceptionally good for Blu-ray Disc across all categories from packaged media to standalone players and BD capable games consoles.”
Blu-ray Disc has become the first High Definition movie format to sell more than one million discs in Europe, with Blu-ray Disc's sales lead over the rival HD DVD format increasing each month since the PS3’s release in March, outselling HD DVD by 2:1 YTD and 3:1 since the launch of the PS3.
The launch of the PS3 in March was seen as a turning point for the Blu-ray Disc format across Europe, with weekly movie sales of Blu-ray Disc titles averaging between two- and five-times the amount of HD DVD sales week over week.*
The best selling Blu-ray titles year-to-date are 300 – the number one selling title in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Benelux and Sweden and Casino Royale - the number one selling title in UK and Ireland.
News of the 1 millionth Blu-ray Disc sale in Europe was met with pleasure in many of the leading Hollywood studios. Bob Chapek, Worldwide President, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment believes that this news is the prelude for an exponential growth period in BD sales.
“Blu-ray will inevitably prevail because Blu-ray delivers what consumers want: True High Definition picture without compromise, the best sound quality, the best choice in content, the most in special features, and of course the most disc storage capacity. No tradeoffs. No compromises,” commented Chapek.

Yeah I just recieved that in my email... You can clearly see the reason behind Warner's decison. It was only logical. I don't know how accurate the figures are but I know where I've gone shopping for the Blu it takes up more shelf space than HD-DVD. In the local HMV's etc, also my local blockbuster is one of the stores which is Blu-Ray only.

CES: All Quiet on the Universal Front

Amidst mounting speculation that it is soon to shift alliances, Universal Studios has confirmed that it will not be making any new HD DVD title announcements at this year's CES.
Though previous years have seen a cavalcade of title announcements from HD DVD-supporting studios at CES, this year's deafening silence from Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks has only fueled speculation that one (or both) of the studios are plotting a move to format neutrality or perhaps even Blu-ray exclusivity.

While Universal is issuing a terse "no comment" in response to the persistent rumors, a studio spokesperson did confirm for us that they will not be making any new title announcements at this year's CES.
Paramount similarly declined to make any new title announcements at CES, but as we first reported Monday, the studio is shooting down reports that it plans to abandon the format

that's from CES! it can't have been on their site for months. you would have thought that a studio backing HD-DVD would have promoted their upcoming movies, especially in light of the Warner move... it's finished

well I would like to point out that Universal didn't announce any titles for HD-DVD during CES 2007. But then a week later, they announced a skew of titles.
So don't be surprised if they do the same this year. Enough though, it could be different with Warner leaving HD-DVD.

BDLive (beta) already running on PS3 at CES 2008 \o/
Technicolor was also demonstrating a BD-Live trivia game. One of the most interesting things about this BD-Live demo was that they were using a PS3 as the player! That’s right, a PS3 with BD Profile 2.0 firmware loaded! The Technicolor representatives informed me that the firmware was just loaded up this morning and that it is still in a highly beta phase. Either way, this is good news for PS3 owners, as we can expect to see a BD Profile 2.0 firmware released for the PS3 at some point in the future

Sony Japan to discontinue 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3

Matt Martin 08:40 (BST) 10/01/2008
Limited stock following final shipments in January
Sony Japan has announced that it is to discontinue the 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 skus after a final shipment in January.
The company said that it now intends to concentrate on the 40GB model in the region as it "vigorously promotes" the home console during 2008.
Both 20GB and 60GB models were launched in Japan in November 2006, with the 40GB model launching in November last year.
Sony has continuously changed prices and introduced new models of the PlayStation 3 across Europe, the US and Japan since launching the console in each region.
Last October Sony Europe dropped the price of the 60GB console and introduced a 40GB model, before revealing it would phase out the 60GB sku all together.
In North America Sony launched a 80GB PlayStation 3 last August, and slashed the price of the 60GB model.
The 40GB PS3 has a few less features than the higher-spec models, most notably the loss of backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 titles.
The 40GB model is known to be cheaper to produce for Sony. Kaz Hirai noted earlier this week that he hopes the company's PlayStation business will become profitable in the next fiscal year, now that costs are being reduced at a manufacturing level.

Toshiba Shows Prototype TV Running on PS3 Chip (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,141282/article.html#)
Here's what happens when you take the powerful Cell microprocessor, the chip that sits at the heart of the PS3, and put it to use inside a television. It's impressive.

What happens when you take the powerful Cell microprocessor, the chip that sits at the heart of the PlayStation 3 games console, and put it to use inside a television? Toshiba is demonstrated just such a TV at this week's International Consumer Electronics Show and the results are impressive.
The Cell chip was developed by Toshiba along with IBM, Sony and Sony Computer Entertainment, and is dedicated to graphics processing. Each chip contains a single Power PC core and eight co-processors to make heavy-duty processing of video a breeze.
While Sony developed the chip for its PlayStation 3, Toshiba invested money in the project with an eye to using the device in consumer electronics products. Until CES, the company hadn't shown a Cell-powered consumer device, but a pair of flat-panel TVs on its booth at the trade show have changed that.
The first and perhaps most relevant benefit of putting the Cell inside a television is the ability to handle real-time upscaling of standard definition TV to high-def. With more and more HDTV channels, we get more and more used to the crisp, sharp quality offered by HD and that makes standard definition look poor. With a Cell-powered TV you'd be able to enjoy regular channels in higher quality much closer to that of HD, said Hiroaki Komaki, a specialist at Toshiba's core technology center in Tokyo.
The upscaling doesn't stop there. The same feature can be used to zoom in on an area of an HDTV picture, enlarge that single area, and then improve it's image quality. Imagine zooming in on a home movie of a sports event and getting closer to the action.
The Cell also makes it possible to easily navigate a number of video channels simultaneously. In a demo at CES, the chip was streaming 48 chapters from a standard definition video file in real-time, with each appearing as a video thumbnail on the screen. Clicking on one of the clips would bring it up on the lower half of the screen, with 16 chapters still running in the upper half. Another push on the button would move it to full screen.
If the video streams were HD, it would be able to process six in real-time and display them on the screen, said Komaki.
Toshiba still hasn't decided exactly what features it will build into a Cell-based TV, nor has it decided when such a set will go on sale. One thing Toshiba isn't planning on doing is building a PlayStation 3 gaming system into its TVs. The chips may be the same but Komaki said such a combination isn't likely.
The company has been chasing the idea of Cell-based consumer electronics since it signed on with Sony and IBM to develop the chip in 2001.Too bad there aren't any videos of this, although I haven't searched youtube yet. Has anyone seen any media on this?

Wow, 6 HD streams, and that's without a GPU. Guess we don't have to worry about PS3 being compatible with 4096p in the future.

Wow, pretty cool stuff. Unfortunately I didn't see any of these models being demoed. The closest was the 4 simultaneous 1080p feeds on Sony's 82" 4k x 2k Bravia.

Crave TV: Toshiba Spurs Engine puts PS3 Cell chip in a laptop
Make sure you watch the video to see it in action (http://crave.cnet.co.uk/video/0,139101587,49295004,00.htm)
Ever wondered what would happen if you put the PlayStation 3's Cell processor into a laptop? Us too, and now we know the answer: you get the Toshiba Spurs Engine, a system that turns a normal laptop into a motion-sensing, video indexing, face morphing, standard-def to hi-def converting super machine.
The system was demonstrated in modified Qosmio G45 laptops, each of which uses a standard Intel Core 2 Duo CPU in addition to a Cell chip with four 1.5GHz synergistic processing elements (SPEs). For reference, the PS3 has eight SPEs running at 3GHz, making it approximately 75 per cent quicker. Like any sensible human beings, we wondered how much all this would cost, but Toshiba assures us that if the system actually does come to market, it won't be too expensive. Yeah, and pigs can parallel park.
Toshiba had four demos running :
The first of which transformed standard-definition video into 1080p. This takes any grubby-looking 640x480-pixel video -- of the sort you might record with a mobile phone or digital camera -- applies some hardcore image processing, and spits it out a few hours later as full 1080p. The effect was extremely impressive, and proves that you can, to some extent, polish a turd. Toshiba says it's possible to do this using an ordinary Intel Core processor, but the Spurs system speeds things up considerably -- what would take 24 hours with an ordinary laptop can be done in just three hours with the aid of Spurs. Stop sniggering, Arsenal fans.
The second demo was equally impressive, if a tad pointless. It allowed us to control a Qosmio G45 laptop using hand gestures -- like in Minority Report. The on-board webcam monitored our hand movements and the Spurs system translated these as instructions for the PC. We could pause and resume movie playback simply by holding our palm in the air, or control a cursor by waving a fist at the screen. Selecting options can be achieved by giving a thumbs-up. It's not as easy as, say, using a remote control, but it is very cool indeed.
The third might interest anyone with a shed-load of video to sort through. It scans all your movie files, recognises faces and creates thumbnails of those faces. You can then click the thumbnails to watch scenes with those faces in, or compile them in a separate playlist[/b]. This might be useful for creating a 'best of' reel of your favourite actor, but we didn't bother playing it for too long -- we got distracted by the next demo.
The final Spurs demo was the most fun of them all. Again, it uses the laptop's webcam -- this time to take a picture of your face. This it turns into a pseudo-3D representation of your mug, which you can modify in some interesting ways. We tested it by applying some pink hair, a facial tattoo and some make-up, which did a great deal to improve our four-days-in-Vegas appearance. We don't envisage it being used by many people, but it could be handy for next-gen instant messaging clients or in hair salons.
As with all things cool, Spurs is not yet available to consumers, and may never actually come to market.
But it's fun to dream. We think you'll be mightily impressed.

Excellent coverage by Cnet.
The best thing in that video was SD -> HD conversion.
Even on a shitty browser quality flash vid you could easily see the difference, very nice and 3 hours instead of 24 hours for one hour conversion is not bad considering the quality.
But yeah we'll (consumers) never get those lol (not sure if we'll want to).
They [Cnet] also thought me how to clean my PC as well, they are moving into my plus book :p
