Over the past few years, Naurto has quietly supplanted Dragon Ball Z as America's manga/anime series of choice, topping the charts with its hyperkinetic brand of ninja combat. And it's not just kids' stuff: This series reaches a surprisingly wide audience with its unique characters and stylized aesthetic: I've personally witnessed two grown adult men unashamedly wearing Naruto's trademark headband in public. It's become such a massive domestic hit that Namco Bandai plans to break from tradition by launching its next videogame adaptation, the PlayStation 3-exclusive Ultimate Ninja Storm (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3165168), in the United States before it appears in its native Japan.
Storm hails from developer CyberConnect2, the same team behind the well-received Naruto: Ultimate Ninja PS2 games (and the quirky .hack// role-playing titles), and the similarities to their past efforts are apparent. You're still controlling Naruto through a series of tense one-on-one battles against various super-powered opponents, but everything's been given a sparkly next-gen makeover. "We've put a lot of effort into the graphical engine in an attempt to break the barrier between the anime and the game," says CyberConnect2's CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama. "Our previous Naruto games had cool toon-shaded visuals, but now we can do fine details like hair and shadows that really set this one apart." He's not lying: Storm's in-game graphics look remarkably like a three-dimensional interpretation of the anime -- clean edges, bright colors, and plenty of dizzying camera angles and wild motion blur effects.
The revamped combat engine receives similar attention, shifting character movement to the analog stick in order to free up the directional pad for character-specific one-use items such as bombs or health recovery. And unlike hardcore fighters that require complex controller motions for special attacks, Storm simplifies matters with two attack buttons -- one for melee strikes and another for tossing long-range shuriken -- but deepens the proceedings with its Chakra gauge, a rechargeable meter that you can use to amplify the power of your strikes or be spent all at once on a blistering super move. Another new addition allows you to call upon two assist characters during battles with the L1 and R1 buttons. While you don't actually get to control them, they'll leap in and help extend your juggles and combos.
Our hands-on time left us slightly overwhelmed and befuddled: It's tough to not get a little lost and disoriented amid the fluidly animated chaos, as Naruto sends out hundreds of copies with his Shadow Clone super and chases his foe across disorienting vertical walls. But that unpredictable, over-the-top action is what Naruto fans crave, and the game's simple, nearly automatic-feeling combos let you enjoy the pure visual insanity. The game truly ups the ante with its new Mission mode, an assortment of over 100 special tasks that you discover while exploring the game's wide-open, go-anywhere towns. The mission we saw had Naruto facing off against a gargantuan monstrosity that required perfectly timed button inputs to defeat (a la God of War (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2018842) and Heavenly Sword (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140602)).
While it doesn't exactly re-invent the licensed anime fighter, Storm expands its scope to encompass a metric ton of Naruto content: The game's single-player story spans from the series beginning all the way through issue #135 of Naruto Shippuden. So even though you'll be playing as Naruto during most of the single-player quest, the multiplayer will offer over 25 different characters, each with their own absurd special attacks. Sadly, online play doesn't appear to be on the agenda. "We won't be able to offer online versus play in this game," Matsuyama says. "But we are preparing some downloadable content to increase the game's overall scope."

April 16, 2008 - We had the opportunity to check out several intriguing titles at Namco Bandai's recent press event, but one game that really caught our attention was Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm (http://ps3.ign.com/objects/965/965454.html) for the PS3. Developed by CyberConnect2, the team behind the Ultimate Ninja Heroes games for the PSP, Ultimate Ninja Storm already looks like a highly entertaining piece of software. A few details about the game were presented at the opening of the press event, but we also had the privilege of sitting down with Hiroshi Matsuyama, President/CEO of CyberConnect2 to take a close look at what could be the coolest Naruto game yet.
Ultimate Ninja Storm will primarily be a fighting game that features one-on-one battles in a fully 3D battlefield. However, the mentality behind CyberConnect2's previous efforts is still apparent: this will be a very approachable fighting game that uses a basic control scheme. Matsuyama commented (through a translator): "the number one point obviously is that we have to satisfy the Naruto fans out there, but at the same time we want to make the game casual enough so that those who are not aware of the Naruto license can jump in, pick up the controller and play the game very easily. I believe the game itself encompasses a very wide audience."
From what we've seen so far, the development team is making excellent progress with the title. We were able to see the game running and the characters, environments and animations looked stylish and strikingly fluid. We could tell that a lot of effort was put into the game thus far and there is clearly a great deal of passion in the team. "I think our team is probably -- throughout the whole entire world -- the number one fan of Naruto," says Matsuyama. "We follow the actual creator of the series."
Matsuyama started off the demo by explaining the game as a whole: "one of the goals or themes that we had when we decided to make the PS3 product was to get rid of the barrier between the anime and what the game actually offers, so that we meld them together in a very natural sense. So users have the experience as if they're partaking directly in the anime series." Although we only got to see a few normal style battles, the content looked like a lot of fun. Characters moved quickly and could dash, flip and jump with ninja-esque grace. The build that was presented to us had a very straight-forward layout: the circle button was used for attacks and the X button was for jumping. But basic combat wasn't the only thing going on in Ultimate Ninja Storm.
Not only will you be able to execute normal attacks and various jutsu abilities, but Matsuyama demonstrated that you can hit either R1 or L1 to briefly summon another character into the action to assist you. For example, choose Sakura before the match begins. When you hit the corresponding trigger, she'll flip down, rush towards your opponent and dish out some serious damage. Although each assist ability is based on a timer, you can string your own attacks together with your teammates to create some vicious combos.
We were also impressed and excited when Matsuyama knocked his opponent back and he went flying against the wall -- only to flip around and run along the wall to escape. Matsuyama's character did the same and thus the battle took place on an entirely new plane, and the camera kept track of the action quite nicely.
But battles aren't the only experiences you'll have with Ultimate Ninja Storm. The primary story mode will feature Konoha village as a primary hub and give players the ability to select missions ranging from battles to mini-games -- even boss fights will be accessible. We were impressed to learn from Matsuyama that the game will loosely follow the events of the first 135 episodes of the anime and touch upon key plot points contained within.
The demo ended with Matsuyama showing us one of the game's first boss encounters: Naruto facing off against Gaara and a massive sand beast. The scale of this battle was incredible and Naruto had to leap out of the way of tremendous strikes from the creature. The battle was broken up between free-roaming sections and quick-button events similar to God of War. However, the implementation of these events was excellent and seemed to vary the action perfectly as opposed to detract from it. Naruto even summoned his own creature to face his enemy, and the results were spectacular. We can't wait to see what's in store for us later in the game.
As the demo ended, we asked Matsuyama if there would be any online attributes to Ultimate Ninja Storm. "Unfortunately, we don't have any individual online matchmaking modes for the game, but we will be planning downloadable content that will hopefully compensate for the lack of that feature. We'll make sure we have something interesting for the downloadable content, don't worry."
We won't worry. It seems like CyberConnect2 has a very promising game on its hands

Gamespot Interview
Reps from developer Cyber Connect 2 and Namco Bandai gave us a first look at the recently announced Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm at Namco Bandai's recent press event. Veteran developer Cyber Connect 2 is working on the original game, which will feature more than a dozen playable characters and offer players the chance to duke it out with a host of familiar characters, as well as explore Hidden Leaf Village, Naruto's 'hood. While we weren't able to play the game, we got a brief demo of the title from Cyber Connect 2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama.
Our demo consisted of a quick look at one-on-one fighting in a few locations and an epic fight against one of the game's bosses, Gaara of the Desert. The first demo focused on Naruto facing off against an opponent in an open grassy field. Matsuyama walked us through the game's control scheme, which looks simple but flexible. You'll use circle to attack, X to jump, and square to throw shuriken. Double tapping X will let you execute a stylish double jump that you can direct with the left analog stick. However, the key element of the control setup is the triangle button, which is your chakra and serves as a modifier to the basic moves you can perform.
For example, Matsuyama tapped the button before throwing shuriken, which powered up the lone projectile to a volley for a cost on the meter. Holding the chakra button down will also let you charge up your chakra meter, while double tapping it will let you perform a powerful attack. Besides Naruto's own abilities, you'll be able to tap those of his buddies Sasuke and Sakura, by hitting L1 and R1 respectively, who'll jump out to perform an attack on your foe. Once summoned, you'll have to wait a bit of time before calling them out again, so you'll have to be smart about when you use them. The final bit of the control scheme is the item selection, which you'll use with the D pad. The system seems to pretty elegant and balances the ability to do flashy moves with an accessible control scheme.
The second part of the demo focused on Naruto fighting Gaara, who was putting the power of Shukaku (a giant demon sealed inside him) to good use. The start of the fight makes you think the battle is going to take a good long time as you see normal-sized Naruto facing off against the goliath and not doing much damage. However, the pace quickens as Naruto finds a weak spot on the boss, which allows him to do considerably more damage. Once the boss suffers a set amount of damage, a new sequence kicks up, a God-of-War-style button inputting game, which has Naruto hopping around on the thrashing creature. After a few sequences, Naruto is kicked back and calls out Gamabunta, shifting the whole scale of the fight to a much broader scope, which was really cool.
The visuals in the work-in-progress game already look pretty stunning. Naruto and company look great on the PlayStation 3. While it's not a tremendous accomplishment to capture the look of the anime on the PS3, due to its hardware muscle, we have to say we were mightily impressed by how the game moved. The camera movement and overall performance were already smooth, which was impressive.
Based on what we saw, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm is going to be one to watch for this fall. The game is gorgeous and nails the atmosphere of the anime. The fighting, especially the boss fight, looks like it's going to be fun, and we're pleased to see the control is being kept simple for it. We're anxious to see how that system comes together and how the whole town-exploration segments are going to work. The game gives a good first impression, and we're hoping it delivers. Expect us to follow this one closely as its launch approaches. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm is slated to ship this fall exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

One of the biggest announcements at the Bandai Namco event? The unveiling of the next entry in the licensed brawler you folks can’t get enough of. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm on the PlayStation 3 not only presents one of the better acronyms in all gamedom (NUNS!) but it offers a significant upgrade to a series, that honestly, was getting kind of stale. Year after year, offering little more than later storylines and increased character rosters.
Rather than piling fan service onto an established template, they’ve noticeably revamped the entire perspective of the game, from double-panned 2.5-D, into a more behind-the-back point of view. It really is beautiful evolution for the series. We watched Fox Boy battle enemies on the ground, around 3D obstacles, and even up walls.
Cineractive Chakra scenes are back, but they execute much more seamlessly, with no momentary PS2-era black screen transition. This time around, you can also take two other characters into battle to assist you, in addition to learning new jutsus as you progress through various missions taking place during episodes 1 through 135. (making NUNS the most comprehensive game using the Naruto canon to date.)

And instead of a late-to-the-party, Japanese port, the US will be getting this baby first this October only on PS3. You know we love our ‘Ruto here, having given the Ultimate Ninja series consistently good scores across the board. Unfortunately, the kind devs from CyberConnect 2 wouldn’t let us get a hands-on, meanies, but President/CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama was nice enough to answer even our most trifling fanboy questions (With inquisitive contributions from PlayStation: The Official Magazine’s Teresa Dun.)
Note: The interview contains some scattered English, as it was conducted through a Japanese translator.
GamesRadar: So is the camera always behind the back?
Hiroshi Matsuyama: Actually, it moves according to the real time animation so that the character is always in the picture. But the main concept keeps everybody within the screen.
GR: Does it maintain the control scheme of the other Ultimate Ninja games?
HM: The buttons [are] the same as the other Ultimate Ninja games. Basically the Circle is attack, X to jump, the Square throw long-range attacks. So just pressing the circle buttons will actually combine the Chakra.
GR: Is Triangle still Chakra?
HM: Yes
GR: Do you still have three levels of Chakra moves?
HM: Special moves sequence is preset for one per character so you won’t have three leveling
conditions that it was in the previous Ultimate Ninjas.
GR: So the [Clone Jutsu] we just saw is the only one for Naruto?
HM: Right now, yes, that is Naruto’s special move, but as you progress in the story you’ll be able to unlock other types of moves which you can actually customize.
GR: Sexy Jutsu?
HM: [laughing] I think Sony is a little bit uh…
GR: Oh, really?
HM: So of course you have the standard change features. And special throw moves. And one of the special features, if you look on the top, there’s an L and R buttons - with Sasuke and Sakura on the top. And this is the first time you can summon them to the field to aid you. So for example in that case Sasuke will come out used his jutsu move.
GR: Can you play as just Sasuke?
HM: As long as you have the third character set as Sasuke for example, you’ll be able to navigate… so one of the special other moves, for example, is you can summon them while you’re trying to collect Chakra. It doesn’t have to be during the battle.
And one of the points on top is, once you use it, is a timer that has to fill up before you can reuse it again. So one of the differences in how good a player can actually use it is timing and situational uses of [these] support characters.
GR: Will items still appear on the battlefield?
HM: At this time it’s a little different. You can use the D-pad which an item and location on it and you can use different items on the battlefield.
So for example that’s a special balloon. And this item palette actually differs depending on the character you actually choose. Right now both of them are the same. But like in the retail version for example, actually have Naruto’s favorite cup noodles, cup ramen.
GR: So will the levels give any power-ups?
HM: This time first of all it’s basically broken in two basic modes. One is the battle mode... and there is a mission mode. In the battle mode, essentially, the theme contents of actually making adjustments... accommodations is to change the jutsu that’s being used and also changing the characters that’s acting as your support characters. So you’ll be able to change those as the game progresses.
And for the mission mode, you’ll essentially be navigating Naruto within a huge field and within that mode, there will be different kinds of power ups you can collect. And let me show you something a little different. For example, that one was an open field but inside where it has actual walls, you can actually move across the... Wall battles. And if you take damage, they crumple to they fall towards the ground. And the scene goes back to a ground battle.
GR: Have you guys done away with the cineractive Chakra scenes? Oh, there they are.
[laughing]
HM: One of the things you notice, this is all being rendered in real-time. So it’s not just like a cutcene that’s being introduced but it's just something that’s physically being calculated on this spot.
GR: Very seamless.
HM: Yes. So even though the jutsu that showed the different kind of environmental changes that’s applying, depending on the field you play, that field environment will match the action behind what you’re actually playing. So right now it’s just stone ground, but if it was in field, you’d see the grass behind you. So it renders according to the actual area that’s being fought.
In the mission mode, it’s not only just a simple one-versus-one battle type of a mission, but it also incorporates kinds of missions, such as chase missions for example, item collection missions. To the extent that there’s even a mission in there where you’re supposed to look for a hawk that has a scroll in its hand and you have to try and get it by shooting at the hawk and get it to drop.
As you complete the missions, the missions are made into levels. So as you progress in the missions, you’re actually able to reenact the anime TV series from the first to the 135th story. So it’s all a matter of progression according to the story.
GR: So are the cinemas rendered in-game or are they actually anime?
HM: Instead of actually showing simple cinematics, or just showing maybe like an anime just to show where you’re progressing ours will be a lot more interactive, where you’re actually in the actual sequences where you’re actually physically partaking in that certain storyline. So as you complete these missions you’re actually following through according to the storyline, but you’re just actually navigating through it as an actual character.
And there’s a lot of missions that we have. One of the one’s we like to show is a boss battle. It’s just of the many that we have. This one is something that you’ll see more early on in the stage, but maybe I could just kind of introduce that to you. So you can use your items in the boss battle. And this is an actual scene in the show
GR: Are you actually going to fight all the bosses that are in the anime?
HM: Basically everybody within the lineup in the anime, within the actual plot, will be planned.
GR: Is this the whole series?
HM: In the relations to the 135, up to the 135th episode of the TV anime series, the giant boss battle that he fought will be... For example after you apply certain missions it’ll move to an interaction mode. If he succeeds, he continues onward in the process of action. And again this is for the interaction which you see in the actual anime.
GR: And this is a PS3 exclusive?
HM: Yes, for the PS3.
GR: Are there any plans for... normally the other Ultimate Ninjas have exclusive storylines. Any chance of getting them by DLC?
HM: Although this time we don’t have any specific online match competitions for the game, we do have DLC planned for the game, which will hopefully recompensate [sic].
GR: So there’s no online multiplayer?
HM: Not in this series.
GR: Any co-op?
HM: Basically the core concept of the game is actually a one on one battle. So in the sense of co-op it’s more rather just in the sense of one person. We do have a few missions a few gameplay styles in there which would accommodate the co-op thing, but it’s more in the sense of a one on one battle.
GR: This does cover more of the storyline than any other game before, does it not?
HM: This has up until the point where Naruto is trying to get Sasuke back. So it has up until the boss before it goes into the next series.
GR: During the missions are you going to gain the skills the same way that Naruto does? Like in the plot points where he learns something cool?
HM: It will follow the story plot where as Naurto progresses. The game will actually show the progression.
GR: In the combat?
HM: Yes. So for example in Naruto’s case, when he first was introduced, he obviously didn’t have too many moves himself but towards the story progression as you notice, he gains the special Rasengan and that appears along the process of the storyline and we may have more in store for it… but yes, there is a progression occurring according to the story.
GR: So there’s mission mode, which you’ve described and there’s Battle mode. You said the focus is on one versus one. Is there two versus two at all or one versus two?
HM: No.
GR: So it’s all for just one versus one?
HM: Yes, just one versus one.
GR: And the most you could have playing is two people playing against each other.
HM: Yes.
GR: Will you include American and Japanese language tracks? You’ve been very good with that as of late?
HM: We’re going to be planning to have this game release for the US in October 2008. The US region would actually be the first to actually get their hands on this game. As far as the language portion goes, text-wise, it will actually implement English and French. But for the voiceovers, we actually have English and Japanese voiceovers.
GR: Cool, a lot fans out there prefer the Japanese [voiceovers] with subtitles.
HM: [Laughs]
GR: What about voice actors - are they the original voice actors?
HM: Yes.
GR: It looks really cool. What would you say is the most exciting thing about the game?
HM: Well one of the main things when we actually produced this game was to try and remove the borderline between an anime and actual gameplay. We wanted to kind of reach an effect where when people actually look at this, the start to wonder whether it’s actually game or are they [looking at anime]. So really the visual wall, that appeal that comes from this, is specifically one our one of the points I personally make about the game.
GR: Since the perspective is over the shoulder, behind the back, how will the game present itself when two people are playing?
HM: Well, right now as it stands, our concept of the game was to have a one on one battle. So, basically we made it so that it corresponds in close line, so that you can have essentially depiction of the controlled person and the second controlled player on the same screen and that’s the core concept of how we actually have the people on the screen.
I think that one of the things that we were worried about, was for example, we could have tried to have made more than two player on the same console. But the thing is that we didn’t want to thin out the content of each of the characters and the way their action can be depicted within the game. Which shows one of the decisions why we decided to make it so that there’s basically two controlled characters with both characters onscreen.
GR: How many different characters are there in the game?
HM: Actual battle mode playable characters? 25 characters. And of course we have some other characters that specifically made just for the support characters, too.
GR: You do?
HM: We do. We have plans for some special support characters that I’m sure the fans will be very, very curious about?
GR: Can you tell us who?
HM: The only thing I can say is we do have support specific characters, but…yeah, sorry, we [cannot say]. One other thing… The release date, we’re implying, is still 2008, but that’s still far, far ahead. For the fans who can’t really wait until October we are planning for a some demos of the game which hopefully will be able to give a chance for the all the fans out there for sometime in summer or something and we’ll what we can do as far as how we’ll distribute this for everybody.
GR: Does this mean you guys are looking at the PlayStation Network, possibly?
HM: I can’t really say right now. Sorry.
GR: PSN is a good choice. One other question, for the missions, if you’re playing through the whole one through 135 in the anime, isn’t that a lot of hours? Is the game going to be that long?
HM: Uh, basically although we are kind of reenacting the storylines up to the 135 anime of the series, we’re actually picking out the key areas within the 135, so that it forms a line across from the first to the 135th. Each of those are depicted in missions and each of them are made sufficiently long enough so that it won’t be burdening. So we have that pretty well balanced.
GR: And is there going to be any sort of online leaderboards? As in like some sort of score keeper?
HM: Uh, not for this game series. Basically our online features for the game will primarily be the DLC.
GR: And is the DLC free or is it going to be…?
HM: Sorry. Can’t answer that.

Or well if it 's as good as in the actual trailer I don't mind.

Not too many worries about it coming out last in Europe, sometimes if you're the last to get a game you end up with bonus content, so I'll just keep my hopes up.
Also it sounds like they have enough in the game to fix the lack of online play, & it says you'll be able to download even more content anyway.

Could also be because they recently got Naruttimate Accel (Shippuden) so they can afford to wait. We are barely getting the 3rd game when they are on the 5th right now. Granted that series is PS2 and not next gen but still.

Game looks pretty good...
I finally tried an Ultimate Ninja game, and I have to say it was pretty good. Only having one physical attack button pissed me off though, but it wasn't that much of a nusance.
Anyways, this looks like a complete rehaul of the system, and they added a somewhat powerstone style of fighting (where you can go anywhere at anytime).
It looks pretty dope... Not sure it if it is a day 1, but it is a purchase eventually for me.

Jap developers are not up to date, they're still playing catch up. It's like this generation took them by suprise or something. They don't know how to use shaders, they don't understand all the new graphical technologies that PC have had for a while, and they don't seem to understand the need for online gaming, and have little experience in networking. They need get their acts together and catch up quickly.

Aside from no online, that's a day one purchase. It just screams "Hey, Budokai Tenkaichi! We're using the over the shoulder perspective and doing a WAY better job than you ever did with it!" That aspect alone warrants a purchase.
EDIT: I haven't even finished watching it before I drew my conclusions on it, but then they got on the SIDE OF THE FUCKING MOUNTAIN and then clashed a Kyuubi powered Rasengan against a Chidori. This game is going to be a treat.

That's exactly what I thought. You'd think that after DBZ, their biggest competitor, came out with two consecutive online games they'd wake up by now and offer it in their naruto games by now. If the sequel doesn't offer it they are truly stupid

I got the demo and the visuals really look like a anime cartoon...
The controls are kind of different, but seems like a fun fighter that is fresh in the genre. If the rumors of no online play is true I will more than likely pass on the purchase and rent the title. I really hope this game supports online competitive play, because it has a lot of potential IMO.
Also, the visuals are a little on the bright side, but I'm sure that will be easily adjusted in the final title. The game really does look amazing and puts some pressure on the next Street Fighter.
It sucks you have to pay for Quore to get the demo early, but I was curious if this online magazine was any good so this is a good time to invest the 3 bucks... I'm impressed with the content and if they can keep quality like this I could see buying a few episodes based on content. I'm sure some info on Killzone and Final Fantasy will require a Quore purchase... I may just do an annual subscription and be done with it...

Disagree because I played 3 matches and basically found out all the best ways to win... It is a great intuative fighter, but there isn't really as much depth as you get from a Tekken, VF, Street Fighter and such...
In terms of graphics, yeah it does put pressure on SF4, but in terms of depth, I really don't think so. The game is fun as hell, and I will probably get it day 1, but there are tons of deeper fighters comming out. I'd say this is on the level of that latest DBZ game in terms of depth.
The game is basically just the Ultimate Ninja series from the PS2 in 3D, and the Ult Ninja series was never really that big on depth.

I don't dance if I don't hear music and I don't scratch my head if it doesn't itch. I will not be intimidated!
Besides I'm not the one complaining about what Sony does except for when it actually is pants-on-head retarded. I'll subscribe to Qore for a full year when I have 25 bucks to blow out of my bum.

I like the partner system. Reminds me of assists from MVC2.
I was playing my brother today, and I would enter a combo with naruto, call out sakura to do some additional hits, and then my brother would usually counter (telport behind me... substitution jutsu), and I would call out Sasuke to save my ass from his counter.
It was beautiful :D.

Agreed... It has some depth when you get down too it, but it is still accessable.
Kinda like Burst Limit. The system itself could use some modifications imo...
I still don't like the fact that there is only one physical attack button, but going seemlessly from regular mash circle combos to charka charge hits is better than in Naruto Ult Ninja 2...
I still have to see a charka clash though.
Naruto's ultimate technique is pretty awesome though. Same with Kakashi's. I hope the other characters have ultimates which are just as good.

For anyone that wants the Naruto demo.
Just create a new user and login as bstf23@gmail.com/neogaf99 as the login/pass. Then Go into the playstation store, view downloads. Then download the Naruto Demo and the Resistance 2 theme if you want that. Set them as background downloads then log out.
It should work on more than 5 machines as there's no DRM restrictions like the paid games.

- The left stick moves the character around in any direction
- X button performs a jump.
- Pressing the X button in the air after an initial jump will activate a series of evasive flips that can be continued in any direction as long as the X button is held down.
- Circle is used for the majority of attacks.
-Square is for using the Shurikens.
-Triangle button unleashes the character's Chakra field and enables them to execute a number of techniques from this modified state including
a Chakra Dash ( triangle + X )
normal Jutsu and Ultimate Jutsu attacks. ( triangle + Circle / triangle, triangle, Circle )
- R1 and L1 summon support characters to your side who perform a single attack and then leap away.
- Also providing support are a character's items, which can be used with the D-Pad. And lastly
- L2 and R2 can be held to block.
the entire system is intuitive and extremely simple -- especially in comparison to more traditional (and technical) fighters.
Instead of requiring separate move-set memorization for each fighter, every character in Ultimate Ninja Storm can perform a special attack by loading their Chakra with Triangle and hitting the Circle button.

I really think Kakashi is the better character in the demo. He can end his combos with a throw (Naruto's throw comes out too slow), and it is generally tricker to counter your opponents hits. Guy is a crappy side partner though.
They removed the Upx2+Circle/Downx2+Circle moves from the PS2 Ult Ninja's though. I wanted to do demon wind blade with naruto. :(

I agree, his Chidori is faster than naruto's rasengan I think. But Naruto 's got good mid-range attacks.
Anyway did anyone cucceed on walking on the walls ? I could' nt I don't know if you have to kick your opponent on the wall.

Tons of quewing to play the game in action. Just played the game to death and made a consecutive 12 victories using both kakashi and Naruto. It's really easy to pull out a 75 Hits combo. using everymoves and assist support you can have.
Saw people playing and training on the game from beginning to the end of the expo and trying to challenge me but failed to win. ( most of them just used the Rasengan or Chidori and never used the assist support or Chakra Dash ).
The timing to make a kawarimi is not really needed I think, just have to mash the block button til you see the animation.
Also I never had the opportunity to get the chance to use " berserk " naruto mode with Two tails as my health was always near full bar.... Hope there will be another way to activate it in he full game without loosing to much health.
otherwise I hope there will be other Jutsus and Ultimate Jutsus to unlock or earn in the Story mode.

"French exception"
France is noted for having a particularly strong and diverse manga market. In the 1990s, France became the second country, after Japan, reading manga worldwide. Many works that are published in France fall into genres that aren't well represented outside of Japan, such as adult oriented drama, or experimental and avant-garde works. Early editors like Tonkam have published Hong-Kong authors (Andy Seto, Yu & Lau) or Korean authors (Kim Jae-hwan, Soo & Il, Wan & Weol and Hyun Se Lee) in their manga collection during 1995/1996 which is quite uncommon. Also, some Japanese authors, such as Jiro Taniguchi, are relatively unknown in other western countries but received much acclaim in France. A cultural reason for the sheer popularity and diversity of manga in this country is due to it having a well established and respected comics market of its own. Other reasons are socio-historical, an exceptionally reduced number of TV channels in the 1970s and 1980s explains the powerful impact the Japanese animation had on the audience, since there was not much choice Japanese animation quickly became mainstream. Since its introduction in the 1990s, manga publishing and anime broadcasting are intertwined in France, where the most popular and exploited shōnen, shōjo and seinen TV series were imported in their paper version. Therefore Japanese comics were naturally and early accepted by a large juvenile public who was already familiar with the series and received the manga as part of their own culture. A strong parallel backup was the emergence of Japanese video games, Nintendo/Sega, which were mostly based on manga and anime series
So we do share a really old and historical video game culture with japan. We had the european first video game expo back in 1995 called. super game show.

Imo, console games are offline games, shame everyone wants online nowadays..I still regard the ps3 as a console even if it's practically a pc, if I want online gameplay, I'll go play an Mmorpg.. probably would be fun to fight online with other people too though, but having no online doesn't make it a bad game either.

This game is a great game (indicated by the demo), but best fighting game is pushing it.
It will probably be riddled with infinites and shit. Although with enough chakra it shouldn't make a difference, but still, it will make a difference. It will probably get to the point where you will want to make your opponent use up all his chakra so you can get an infinite on him for full damage. I know that is basically the way me and my bro play the demo. We also try to set up to see if we can hit our ultimates (by using assists as cover) and that is a pretty simplistic strategy if you think about it. Mindgames will probably shallower than traditional fighting games, but I'm fine with that because it is being its own game.
Still though, it is probably gonna be pretty deep for an anime fighter. These types of fighting games are ususally VERY shallow or broken to hell.

Ummm...no. It's in the demo as well. True, I suppose it could change in the final product, but I've seen no vid from any source, even the official website or the demo that didn't have the character's faces really brightened. It's pretty much unnecessary. Hardly a deal breaker, as I'm buying this game day 1 off the gameplay and cuz it's Naruto only, just figured they'd night highlight the fukk out of their faces for no reason. Otherwise, the graphics look perfect.

Naruto UNS Gets DLC Day 1 (http://kotaku.com/5039765/naruto-ultmate-ninja-storm-getting-day-one-dlc)
What it may be is currently unknown. Why is it negative? Because its just stupid, the game isnt even done yet, not even burned to blu-ray disc yet. So why cant they just be on the disc at retail? They are pulling an EA. Either itll likely be a 500KB download which unlocks something already on the disc, or just some new stuff you gotta pay for...which still, shouldve been on the disc. Either way, unless its free, its stupid.

Taking the grind out of RPGs defeats every sense of accomplishment you could get from it. The only reason I see this staying viable is for those who just can't afford to put the time into an RPG due wordly factors. No pricing scheme in the world could seriously justify this.

Naruto dev: Sixaxis tilt control ‘useless’
Story By Mark Podd
No trophy support for Ultimate Ninja Storm, either
Sixaxis tilt control is “useless,” according to the producer of forthcoming PS3 Naruto exclusive, Ultimate Ninja Storm.
Speaking to GAMER at last week’s Games Convention, producer Hitoshi Matsuyama confirmed that Ultimate Ninja Storm won’t support Trophies, before nonchalantly dismissing Sony’s motion sensing control system.
“We’re not supporting Trophies,” Matsuyama said through his translator.
“And before you ask, we’re not supporting Sixaxis. It’s useless,” he added.
He then proceeded to wave the controller about in a jocular manner, to highlight the unsuitability of motion sensing control for the game.
Admittedly, with a lot of Ultimate Ninja Storm’s gameplay being platform and beat-’em-up based – traditionally, genres that require very precise inputs – we weren’t surprised to hear that it won’t be supporting tilt functionality.
On the plus side though, we’re glad to report that the PS3 exclusive title is shaping up rather well.
Not only does it look decent (both technically and stylistically), the blend of action-adventure and beat-’em-up gameplay looks like it should work a treat as well – especially with it featuring some huge boss battles.
Keep an eye out for some proper first impressions in the coming days.

No, in those games, as well with HS, they felt like tacked on accessories that were horrible imo.
I would have rather just used the analog sticks to guide the grenades, and I did turn off the sixaxis in HS and R&C because it was so aggrivating to have shitty tacked on motion controlls that actually made the game harder and didn't any overall fun imo. Struggling against the control = instant failure.
Folklore is the only game that has used motion controls right so far on the PS3 (out of the games I have played) because it isn't just some added on gimmick. The game itself revovles around that feature to capture monsters and it is better for it...

Here's hoping the success of this title will spawn a Shippuuden version w/online play. It shouldn't be too much a spoiler since Shonen Jump US is covering Shippuuden now anyhow.

Yeah they usually do a naruto game each year. No by October next year Cartoon Network should definately be airing Naruto: "Hurricane Chronicles". Like you said, the manga is already out now, its just slow ass CN thats holding everyone up.
Makes me wonder if this will be the new continuation of the series though. Will we ever get Accel 1 & 2? I still want to play those and hope we get them. Maybe if Sony starts downloadable PS2 games, thats one way to get it if they (NamcoBandai) feel making ps2 games 2 years from now will be pointless
And yeah, it just HAS to have online. If it doesnt, they lost their mind

Naruto doesn't even do anything new in like the first half of Shippuden, its all Sasuke--he's just started to get cool again...
don't know how much better Shippuden would be if it didn't go up till like..I dunno, Naruto after Kakashi/Yamato training.
Online play would've been nice, but this game is still bought...Probably not new, but I'll get it.
so this one doesn't have online?

First review of the game (EG Portugal):

8/10;
9/10 if you're a Naruto fan.
They have lots of praise for the game, lack of online affects the score a bit. Visuals are outstanding, soundtrack is not from the show, it was composed for the game but is heavily inspired by the Naruto anime and is fantastic.
Loads of minigamesit seems, just like previous CC2 Naruto games. Release date can't some soon enough.
RPG mode is divided into two. Story missions and ranked ones. Story missions are flashbacks of Naruto's adventures. There's 50 of these. All with cutscenes it seems. Then there's 50 ranked missions, ranging from simple fetch quests to mini games and grand battles. Story mode missions contribute a total of 30% to the completion percentage and it took EG approximately 10 hours for those.
November 7 is approaching ! can't wait !

so 50 missions that count...and 50 missions that dont matter and i probably wont do. Man they had me thinking there were 100 story mode missions. BS
Jay Gee
10-23-2008, 11:59 PM
BS? More like mountains out of molehills. There's more than enough incentive to go through all 100 modes, regardless of whether half of them are ranked or not. You're griping over little shit now, dude. This tidbit of information in no way makes or breaks the game. The biggest issues with this title is the lack of online (MP, co-op) and no trophy support. Anything else is just splitting hairs.

Im not saying the game is bad, its just for...i dont know how many months, CC2 has been going on saying 100 missions for Naruto's story....now we find out its really only 50. But still, took them 10 hours or so, thats still pretty good for 30%

Perhaps you misquoted them. They probably were saying that there was 100 missions in total, not all dedicated to the story mode. Either way, it's a very small thing to be upset over.

Namco Bandai promises Naruto DLC will be free

In addition to a stunning new trailer, a recent blog post on the PlayStation.blog revealed that PS3's exclusive Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm will feature post-release DLC, which will add additional support characters and missions to the game. While Namco Bandai is usually notorious for their overpriced DLC offerings, we're surprised to hear that it'll be all free. Seriously. "It will mostly focus on new support characters and missions and best of all, it will all be FREE!" If the beautiful graphics and exclusive PS3 support haven't convinced you, perhaps this announcement will.
Ultimate Ninja Storm is available next week.

Are you shitting me? Free DLC from Namco Bandai? ARE YOU SHITTING ME? It must be worthless DLC, cuz this is the same developer that charged PS3 owners $5 for fucking Yoda. I'll believe it when I see it on the PSN Store.

OMFG! Free DLC from Scamco... Damn.
I am guessing they are seeing people not willing to buy every single little thing as DLC... Especially when that shit could have been included in the game, before the fact...

wow thats amazing, not just some but ALL DLC will be free. Ubisoft better follow suit with The Broken Bond becuase i'll be damned if I buy any DLC from them after RoaN.
But its kinda of no surprise why its free. support characters; cant really see anyone buying that. Missions will likely = filler which may or may not be fun as well. But trophies would be good, id like to enjoy this for quite some time.

This game is niiiiiiiiiiiiiice :p
EDIT:
*sigh* Ok this game isnt getting higher than a 8 from me -_-
EDIT2: Something i typed on another forum:
Ok well lemme right what i did so far and thoughts. So i spent alot of time with free battle mode against my brother; easily the best part of the entire game is fighting against a HUMAN opponent. No online = bullshit.
So you get a good number of already unlocked characters to start with, basically the Rookie 9. Each with their beginning moves like Naruto had Demon Wind Bomb i think it was called which could later be changed to Rasengan. Why you get to only choose one now? Beats me...beats me.
So yeah, free battle mode. 1 vs 2, 1 vs cpu and finally cpu vs cpu. There were some other things i think but i cant remember. 1 vs CPU will get very boring....fast. So before you get any further in THINKING you want to buy this game, dont if your an only child and/or have no friends.
Graphics, phenomenal. Game tops out at 720p, lucky me, its all my TV supports. Lip Synching....ehhh, not so much. Its annoying at first...well, it kind of still is but i guess if you can looks over that then great. Japanese and English audio on the disc! Thats a great plus even with English subtitles!
Game modes are: Ultimate Mission which should be called "we cut alot of things out cuz we're lazy" mode, Free battle mode, and Options....thats it!
MANDATORY 4GB install here folks! OMG did it take forever, these installs are getting ridiculous. Then two 3MB save files.
Um what else...well lemme get to Ultimate Mission Mode. *sigh*...im so dissappointed in CC2. Not only were they extremely lazy with this, but its completely useless and kind of boring sadly. What they tried to do with Free Roam like how Ubisoft's Rise of a Ninja did, they failed it. Sure, Konoha looks better and even to my surprise, bigger i think...but thats it, KONOHA. No leaving the village in this game people! But THE WHOLE point of free roam is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT! All you do is select the damn mission by hitting start. So i guess all you CAN do is play mini games and find coins and konohamaru etc...for whatever reason you'd want to do that -_-.
Had a nice ass intro though. Lets see, as soon as you begin you skip like, at least the equivalent to 10 episodes. I wanna say even more maybe! Expecting to steal the hidden scroll and fight Mizuki? Keep dreaming. Now i expect this to happen ALOT more. Even no Haku/Zabuza arc...WTF!
So i know this sounds like a long rant so lemme change it up back to good....the graphics are nice...really nice....um...hmmm....damn.
Sad part is that THIS COULD be my ENTIRE review! Thats all there is to it and that this game offers! Its sad. No online, no trophy support. I say if your a HUGE Naruto fan for sure, get it. Not so much? Might wanna wait till you find cheap prices.
excuse any typos you might come across, was just typing random stuff.

And me and my brother will probably put countless hours in to this game. And hopefully I can get friends to play this easymode fighting game with me. They always get discouraged, trying to play me in Street Fighter or something, but this game is a lot easier to get so hopefully they'll want to play against me haha.
