Rumor: Skype heading to PSP

A refernce to Skype has been found decrypted version of vshmain.prx from PSP firmware revision v3.10. While there is nothing functionality as of right now, rumors are mounting that just as POPS and GPS PRX's were found in previous firmwars, the same process could be going on in order to bring Skype to the PSP. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2239/2158209109_bc30949c56_o.jpg

Skype bound for PSP

Voice over IP chat client headed for Sony's handheld
Skype, a program that allows you to talk to people for free via the internet, is headed for the PSP, Sony has revealed.

The voice-over-IP client works a bit like MSN, but specialises in voice transfer; you build up a friends list or simply dial the number of the Skype account you want to contact, and it works like a phone from there on in.

Although Sony hasn't given it the whole press-release treatment, the revelation comes from an easily miss-able mention on their official site for the upcoming CES show.

"Call friends, talk trash to fellow gamers or catch up with acquaintances via Skype for PSP system," Sony states. Note, Sony expects you to talk trash - try having an intellectual conversation with gamers and the PSP will explode (maybe).

Expect specific details - tech specs and release - to come out of CES and related conferences, kicking off on Monday. We'll be there to cover it all, of course.http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=178410

Skype coming to the PSP - Proof

http://www.ubergizmo.com/photos/2008/1/Skype-PSP-Video.jpg

[CES 2008] The CES 2008 website from Sony shows that the PSP will feature Skype support – something that is definitely not out today. The PSP video also gives the information away, although it shows up only for 1 frame! It’s an interesting Easter egg and apparently, we are the first to have caught it :)

That would be awesome to have. I've never used Skype before and if it were available on the PSP I'd probably be willing to check it out.

Report: PSP Skype launching this month
Japan's Nikkei Net says Sony expects to launch Internet phone service imminently; free for PSP-to-PSP and PSP-to-PC calls, but limited to PSP Slim owners.
By Tom Magrino, GameSpot
Posted Jan 4, 2008 10:09 pm GMT

Earlier this week, Sony's Consumer Electronics Show site slipped news that voice over IP support would soon be added to the hardware maker's frontline handheld, the PlayStation Portable. While the blurb contained no information beyond the fact, Japan's Nikkei Net news service (registration required) is reporting today that Skype functionality will be added to the PSP as early as this month.

Nikkei also provided a few details on what PSP owners can expect from the Sony-Skype partnership. Skype's Internet phone technology will be limited to owners of the PSP Slim, which launched worldwide in September. Owners of the redesigned handheld will able to download Skype software directly onto their PSPs and then use a specially designed microphone to communicate.

The Skype service will be free for PSP-to-PSP and PSP-to-PC calls. PSP Slim owners will also be able to sign up for a dedicated phone number, which Nikkei is reporting will run for 2,250 yen (about $20.70) for three months of usage. Nikkei did not report on whether the pricing structure would extend to other regions. Sony had not returned requests for comment as of press time.

Well, if true, it sucks that Sony is not going to take advantage of the PSP installed base neither for the TV add-on nor for the skype functionality. It'll help boost PSP slim sales though.

Skype on PSP called off
Sony pulls the plug on hook up between their handheld and VoIP giant.

It was big news in the days running up to CES, but now Sony is distancing itself from plans to bring the joys of Skype to the PSP.
It was due to launch tomorrow, but now the service has been suspended, apparently down to the failure of Sony's microphone products not meeting Skype's specifications.
In the week prior to this month's gadget-a-thon in Las Vegas, this story had everyone buzzing, with Sony even dropping the news on their official site before we all got to CES.
There's no word on when it'll be seeing the light of day, but we're willing to bet it's going to be a while yet.
Be sure to keep it here for any news as soon as we get it.http://www.t3.com/news/no-skype-on-psp?=35124

Skype and Mics on Sony PSP delayed in Japan

Sony announced in early January that the Sony PSP would support Skype by the end of January. Today Sony announced to delay the Sony PSP Skype features because the new PSP microphones are not meeting the Skype specifications in part to obtain certification.

Sony planned to introduce the PSPJ-15010 (single pack) and PSPJ-15011 (twin pack) microphones in Japan tomorrow. Update: Just confirmed with Sony PR, the delay of Skype support on the PSP is only in Japan. For the U.S. and Europe the Skype PSP firmware is coming end of January.

Because of these hardware issues, Sony is not rolling out the Sony PSP firmware with the Skype features this month in Japan. Sony is working on a new release schedule for Skype on the Sony PSP.

Skype on the Sony PSP would offer these features:
Free voice calls between Skype users
Skype contact list management (view existing contacts, add new ones)
Skype presence (see which friends are online and available to talk)
SkypeOut calls to make calls to landlines and mobile phones anywhere in the world (requires the purchase of Skype credit)
Optional SkypeIn number that lets users receive calls on Skype from landlines and mobiles anywhere in the world (requires the purchase of Skype credit)
View and modify Skype settings and account details (including username creation, SkypeOut settings, voicemail settings and call forwarding)
