Yeah, post-COD4 I think this game's gonna need to step it up, but I'll still be picking this one up because I'm a SOCOM whore :-p
(mainly excited for SOCOM IV though!)

Previews: SOCOM Confrontation
Classified intelligence on Sony's online-only shooter.
By Joe Rybicki 01/03/2008

Location[/b
Initial recon indicates subject is returning to previous areas of operation. "Crossroads is by far the fan favorite," Luisi says, "so we definitely wanted to show what this level would look like in the next generation. We're trying to maintain a smaller size; the largest level in this game is going to be smaller than anything we had in SOCOM 3. And so while we are going to expand Crossroads out a bit, it's not going to be this huge, expansive area. All the other maps we're going to ship initially with the game are all going to be new."
[b]Expansion
Subject is expected to expand sphere of influence over time. "We wanted to have meaningful content packs that'll be available postrelease that aren't just new maps, but in many ways kind of a mini-expansion pack," Luisi reveals. "You get new weapons, special forces...and even features that are going to change and evolve the gameplay as it goes on. And we're looking at having them themed after different areas. The initial release is the North African theme, and we're looking at bringing in new environments.
Complexity
Subject is showing signs of increased guerrilla activity; expect dense resistance and close-quarters combat. Luisi cites "intimate" locations. "Instead of spreading 32 players over this huge area with vehicles," he says, "we want to have a tighter interaction between the players. There's still going to be plenty of cover in the environments -- it's not going to be a fragfest -- but you're going to have a much different experience. You're going to want to look around every corner and be very careful about how you move through the environment, because it's not going to be as spread out as it was.
Recruitment
Recon indicates subject is engaging in energetic recruitment, enlisting community participation though material incentives. "We'll have ways of unlocking equipment and customization options by participating in team tournaments and clan ladders," Luisi says. "If you start winning, you're going to get rewards like different weapons and items. We even plan on having some higher-end tournaments that'll have a very specific reward for the person who wins that tournament. You'll be able to get things that set you apart from other people [and show] you've achieved a certain level of success in the game. It's about bragging rights."
Transformation
In deference to "intimate" locations, subject has disabled vehicular transport. "For the initial release, vehicles are out," Luisi says. "We are looking at possibly bringing them back later on with downloadable updates, but initially, we want to focus on the on-foot combat, making that as visceral as possible."
Customization
Informant reveals subject is emphasizing adaptability in personal appearance, potentially resulting in increased difficulty in identifying hostiles. "We are going to focus more on what identifies your character," he says, "like camo, clothing, and some of the gear options. Being able to customize your uniform is a huge part of your identity. It plays a little bit into the strategy of how well you're concealed in the environment, as well."
Identification
Subject appears to be encouraging community members to establish group identities. While this may make groups easier to target, expect further difficulty in distinguishing hostiles from friendlies. "As a clan leader," says Luisi, "you can go in and customize the camo pattern -- including its density and color -- and the base uniform structure. Then the members of the clan can go in and further customize objects on their characters and further customize their look. The idea is that they will look like their own special force. So the same way you see these guys out there in the different special forces -- each one looks different but you can tell they're one team? That's what we want to go for."
Collateral Damage
Informant cites "more interaction" with regard to physical surroundings, indicating potentially dangerous elements in the environment that must be taken into account (e.g., exploding barrels). "There will be destructible elements to the environments," Luisi says. "We have to be careful so that people can't just blow up any area, because we've spent so much time on the design and the flow of the environment that it's hard for us to allow somebody to just blow up random pieces of it. But we definitely plan on having objects that can be destroyed or moved. So the way you interact with the environment is going to be a lot more complex."
Acoustics
Subject appears to be emphasizing audio reconnaissance to an unprecedented degree. "The audio system...is going to be highly detailed," says Luisi. "It uses occlusion, so if somebody's fighting around a corner, you can hear it, and it sounds as if they're fighting around a corner. The audio will follow paths through the environment. So if you're running around, you're going to be making noise, and it'll be a lot easier to find somebody."
Exposure
Subject is expected to employ environmental dynamics to assist in locating individuals. "We have a lot of interesting things involving interactivity with the environment," Luisi says. "Like when you're shooting your weapon, you're ejecting shells from your weapon -- those bounce off the environment, they roll down hills, and you can walk around and kick them and they'll make noise. So you'll need to be careful.

yeah it's the reason why Socom was so big...all these games going first person and here is a shooter, a tactical shooter, where you can see your character at all times...
Socom in first person isn't really socom, it's one of the few shooters where you still has some type of attachment with your character...

It was nice, however, to have the first person few when trying to snipe someone with an M4A1 SD ;) Havent played in a long time but all you had to do was push up on the D-pad to get a mini first person view without the gun.

Socom 2 is easily among my favourite games of all time so naturally Im expecting great things from Confrontation although S3 sucked. Socom 2 is still the best online shooter ever IMO. The server/lobby system is still the best, it enhanced the community a LOT. Party systems are good but cant touch the Socom lobby system and normal server lists (which majority of games have) I wouldnt even talk about, they completely suck compared to Socom/party systems like in Resistance/Halo. The best thing about S2 was the map design, its AMAZING. One game mode/level was also a very good thing and the rhythm of the matches due to map design/weapon balance (once you banned certain overpowered weapons) was unrivaled. Hopefully they get it right this time with Confrontation again and S3 can be forgotten.
Couple of my vids from S2 just to remember the golden days :p :

Watching the gameplay vids of confrontation, I just dislike the animation. Maybe it was not really implemented but i found the characters too cocky.
I hope they will get rid of the weapon custmisation and will get back to the hold ak-74 and m4A1.....
I also hope they won't integrate a f***** Ranking system and that the game won't be overloaded with those stupid cheaters who killed Socom -__-.

give me all of the gameplay mechanics of the original, make it as impossible to cheat as possible, and this will make the game shine for me!
ill never forget the most amazing running no scope sniper shot in the history of games!
the mechanics of #2 were quite terrible, what with all the lag and control sliding, they used that aim acceleration crap which was a terrible move, or at least thats what it seemed like they used! like in, dare i bring this into the conversation, perfect dark zero :runs:... :after a few minutes of hiding comes back: THE hardest game to aim in, in the history of games that require you to aim, yes even worst then 50 cent bulletproof... not to say that socom 2 was THAT bad but it was bad compared to the first socom game!

I think my favorite one was Frostfire. the kills were so intense and quick and the gameplay really tactic on this map. But the claymore on socom 1 were too lame lol but amusing.
Like in Desert Glory where rounds could last long hours if there were one terrorist left in the prison with a claymore....That's true Socom 1 was awesome but the hit detection was annoying, you could snipe someone while aiming the target and miss him by 10 cms.

I have to disagree; I enjoyed SOCOM 2 the most. Had the best maps as well. Vigilance was my favorite map. However, those damn cheaters always got on top of the roofs and it was next to impossible to kill them once they got up there.

I'm excited this game is still under development, but they really need to step up the visuals to keep up with titles like COD4... I know Confrontations is suppose to be an PSN only title that will hold over fans until Socom 4 is released, but if the title falls flat it could damage the Socom Pedigree. The Socom name has already stumbled with Socom 3 with hardcore fans and if Confrontations is weak people may not care about the true sequel being made by Zipper. Also, it's a bad move not to offer some of the best maps from Socom 2. I'm sure they will be offered at a price later down the road pissing off the hardcore fans...

I love the " socom " feeling more than any other game in the same genre.
The way you co-operate with your teamates to free the ostages. it was so damn tactical...
One thing I loved about socom 1 and 2 was the way you could turn off the grenades and explosif devices..SO you could only play with guns. that was so genius.
And the way you die " realistically " with one or two shots ( COD4 is quite similar now )
I remember back in 2001 I was one of those hell of a rusher aligning 4 or 5 kills per rounds and finishing with more than 20 kills and in the first three of any game...
It was so new for the console gaming area, amazing online experience.
The only thing i m kind afraid of is the " weapon customisation " I always hated customisation in games, don t ask why because maybe I find customisation a bit unfair.
I prefered the old " already set weapons " like the Ak-74 or the M4A1.

This is indeed Crossroads, the most fan-requested SOCOM map. This shot is taken from our new OTS camera, but the player is backed up into a wall here so it might look a bit confusing. This is the right in front of the SEAL spawn, looking down the street in the direction of the warehouse. The commando in the upper right is aiming a M87ELR, and his teammate by the tree is wielding a G36-C. The mercenary charging up the street is firing with an F90.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a142/sunwontshine/socom2.jpg
This is a brand new map, which has a 16 player core area and an expanded footprint for 32 player matches. This ruined shopping center is a great sniping location, and is a hotly contested control point in our internal sessions. The player here is aiming an M60-E3; eagle-eyed fans will also spot an AK-47, a USAS-12 and a SASR sniper rifle in this shot.
Also, SealTeam-6 requested that I specifically iterate this point “for the record”, so here we go:
There is an option to use classic SOCOM camera! It looks and feels like the original classic camera!

Rumor: SOCOM Confrontation bundle includes new Bluetooth headset

A supposedly leaked PowerPoint presentation revealed a new official Bluetooth headset for PS3. Set to launch in July/August, the headset would retail for $50 individually. More exciting, however, is SOCOM Confrontation bundle that's mentioned: both the game and headset would hit retail for $60.
The design of this rumored headset is an improvement over the one offered with Warhawk. However, don't get your hopes up quite yet. When asked for comment, a SCEA representative told us that "we have currently made no announcements for a new PS3 headset so any information is speculation and rumor."

SOCOM Confrontation Special Forces Unveiled
Check out which groups you'll be able to join.
By Joe Rybicki, 03/20/2008
As we revealed early this month, the May issue of EGM has a blow-out cover story on SOCOM Confrontation. Along with the loads of other Confrontation info in the story, you'll find a list of all the different special forces included in the game. Joining a special force is now a perk associated with joining a clan; solo players will still be able to play as either commandos or mercenaries, but special forces (and their associated uniforms, gear, and weapons) will only be available to clan members.
Only, er, we got the list a little bit wrong in the mag. So here, for the first time anywhere, is the complete, correct lineup of special forces available at launch, complete with links to Wikipedia entries for the real-life organizations.
* Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEALs, United States)
* Special Air Service (SAS, United Kingdom)
* Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK, Germany)
* Unidad de Operaciones Especiales (UOE, Spain)
* 1er Régiment de Parachutistes d'Infanterie de Marine (1er RPIMa, France)
http://media.1up.com/media?id=3516151&type=lg
To reiterate, neither Italy's COMSUBIM nor France's GIGN will be included in the game... at least not in the initial release. You can get all the other information you need on SOCOM Confrontation when the May issue of EGM begins arriving in subscriber's mailboxes next week!

We've brought you several big stories on SOCOM Confrontation in the past month, but today Sony passed on one more important piece of information: a release date. The latest iteration of the popular online shooter franchise will be arriving on September 16.Which puts more doubt into Killzone coming out in September or even 2008 for that matter. NEW SOCOM INFO! FRESH!
Blogged by admin as Uncategorized — admin Wed 26 Mar 2008 6:29 pm
You can no longer set up a match exactly defined to your teams exact strengths and create a honeypot to raise your clan ranking. For you clan to have a global ranking you now have to be a rounded team with good strategies for dealing with all the maps. Now , you can build all the custom games you want - the room system is still there, which i know is really important to socom fans. you can do all your clan tryouts and training in those rooms. and even playing within those games aggregates different stats, because we track a lot of information about the player, but it doesn’t directly go into the global clan ladder” (NO RANK UP)
* Crossroads (ps3) has an extra outer ring that the ps2 didn’t have. There are two towers now.
* Confrontation is 32 players but you can make smaller maps for 16 players total.
* Tilt with the sixaxis can be tweaked for sensitivity
* There will be 7 maps total at launch. All maps will be based in North Africa
* There are exploding barrels and cars.
* There is an underground map that has a collapse part triggered by the enemy
* View distance is big, so no more fog like SOCOM 2
* Clan support will be available on socom.com where the leader can change their clan, add players etc.
* Audio has changed. Sounds around a corner sound muffled.
* Oh! there is now a run/sprint mode. You can run/sprint but you cant shoot and your gun will not be accurate after running. So basically just use this too avoid snipers.
* Ranked matches are automated, if you wanna set up your own room with specifics (no grenades, etc) it wont be ranked. This stops cheaters and rank ups.
* Your clan can talk via open chat, but you can L2 to chat to everyone on your team. Or if you have proximity chat then you chat with who ever is around you. They are planning on having a new headset for socom. The printing of EGM sucks so screenshots dont look sharp or nice colors. I would wait for screenshots on your computer to judge.
o They are bringing back a new game mode. “elimination ” its like socom 2. kill the whole other team or take a draw

Ive never seen a Barrel in Socom 2 and ive played it 2 1/2 years every week at least 2 hours.
Only when you planted a bomb or destroyed the bridges you could blow something up.
Oh and there are cars, but you cant blow them up,
I hate exploding barrels... totally unrealistic and stupid.

Rat's Nest has an explodable barrel or two in it, and I'm sure Desert Glory does too, it also had that truck that you could blow up, near the garage area. Man I really want to play SOCOM now... does anybody else have S2, S3, or Combined Assault?

Part of me wants to say yes, but another part says no. At the back of desert glory, terrorist spawn buy that garage there is a barrel but it is just a barrel with a fire inside of it, I don't think any of them blow up.
But I have Socom 1, 2, and 3. I am kind of afraid that after playing cod4 and stuff that socoms third person gameplay might not be as appealing anymore, but we will find out.

^ COD4 is the first FPS I really got into and forgot I was playing in 1st person. I think the melee and sprint options added a lot to the FPS gameplay mechanics. I'm still a die hard Socom fan I just hope they get the gameplay right and true to the Socom 2 roots. Also, the visuals have to be good enough to not feel like a joke after playing COD4. I know the title is a PSN release, but the game will be released almost a year after the COD4 public beta started so I can understand if gamers want a close experience visually with a PS3 exclusive... The only advantage Socom Confrontations could really exploit is the flaws of the COD4 online experience. The host quitting option ending a game get's really annoying and is a huge flaw IMO. I doubt SC will have the same visual experience, but if they get the gameplay and online experience right they could steal some of the COD4 user base on the PS3.
Personally I can't wait to play the new visions of Desert Glory, Crossroads, Blizzard & Frostfire.
new info from EGM:
GAMEPLAY:
-You can roll or underhand a grenade with real physics
-You can lean your guy with the six-axis instead of the d-pad
-There is proximity chat
-Your clan can talk via open chat, but you can L2 to chat to everyone on your team. Or if you have proximity chat then you chat with who ever is around you.

-Tilt with the six-axis can be tweaked for sensitivity
-There are exploding barrels and cars.
-View distance is big, so no more fog like SOCOM 2
-Smoke looks dark gray
-They talk about the 3rd person view. They said because the new widescreen TVs have a different ratio, there was too much space on each side of the classic view.
-"Sony's Seth Luisi says, "Because it was more centered towards 4:3 TVs, and now going to 16:9, we have a lot more area off to the sides."
-You can go up on roofs.

global tournaments FTW!
This is the formula that every Sony 1st party military/shooter should follow to the letter. Considering that most games like this developed and published under Sony won't be recognized by the likes of Major League Gaming, they should become self-sufficient in this regard.
Online Interface/Balancing/No Host Problems/Online Lobby Socom Confrontation > > COD 4
I'm guessing this title will have dedicated servers? If so, then yes, that automatically puts it above COD4. Lobbies are purely the nail in the coffin, as COD4 would greatly benefit from people being able to party up at the lobby and go into the game from there. I mean, the game is great and all, but even Killzone on the PS2 destroys COD4 in terms of lobby and in-game messaging.

NEW SOCOM 3 AND SOCOM CA MAP PACK RELEASED... FOR FREE!
Posted by David “Point Man” Brothers
Hot off the presses, a new downloadable map pack has just been released for SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault. This is the third downloadable map pack released for the two titles. This new downloadable map pack includes the classic SOCOM and SOCOM II maps Crossroads, Fishhook, Frostfire and Guidance.
Crossroads is a SOCOM II urban map based in North Africa. Crossroads consistently ranks as the most popular classic SOCOM map and a next generation version of Crossroads will be featured in SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation. It is playable in a day or night setting with up to 16 players in Suppression, Demolition and Control gametypes.
Fishhook is a SOCOM II map based on a seaside North African village. It is playable with up to 16 players in a day or night setting in Suppression, Extraction, Control and Breach gametypes.
Frostfire is a SOCOM map which features an oil drilling platform off of the coast of Alaska. It is playable in a day or night setting with up to 16 players in Suppression, Control and Demolition gametypes.
Guidance is a SOCOM II map which features an ex-soviet military base in Russia. It is playable in a day or night setting with up to 16 players in Suppression, Demolition and Control gametypes.
The price of the new map pack, FREE! In fact, we are making all three of the SOCOM 3 and SOCOM CA Downloadable Map Packs free from this point forward. This is no April Fools joke. We want to give something back to all of the fans who have stuck with us all of this time.
This is a great opportunity to get your Crossroads fix in before SOCOM Confrontation is released on the PLAYSTATION®3 this September. It will also give you a good opportunity to see first hand how far SOCOM has come with the latest PS3™ installment. After playing both versions, there is no way I can go back. Experiencing Crossroads in SOCOM Confrontation on the PS3 is like experiencing it again for the first time. While the layout is instantly familiar to anyone who has spent hundreds of hours playing Crossroads in SOCOM II, the level of detail which is achieved on the PS3 makes it a whole new experience.

There’s a late-March snow storm going on in Vancouver today that came up so suddenly that many team members were biking to work when it hit. There’s nothing like a snow day to make you want to hunker down in front of a warm devkit and crank towards Alpha. The Confrontation team is making a big push towards feature complete, and things are really starting to shape up.
Hopefully your May issues of EGM are starting to arrive, and you are getting a big dose of info about Confrontation as well as a look at two of the maps. There has been huge forum response to the magazine’s impending release, so I’m sure that the real thing will cause a flury of posting.
The entire team is implementing features, fixing bugs, tweaking art, tuning values and testing the game. With apologies for the camera quality on my cellphone , here is a peek into the development effort at this exact moment in time…
Tuning audio systems:
http://socom.us.playstation.com/image.axd?picture=snowday2.jpg
Tuning character control values:
http://socom.us.playstation.com/image.axd?picture=snowday3.jpg
Deep in the code:

Tweaking the art:

Playtesting:

More playtesting:

And that’s what we are doing, day in and day out. Watch this space for updates on features and some anwers (or fuel) for the debate around what’s the same, what’s improved and what’s new in Confrontation.

Sony's Socom to take on CoD4
Tuesday 1-Apr-2008 10:53 AM Online-focused, 32-player player strategy shooter headed for Blu-ray and PSN
Sony's Socom: Confrontation for PS3 will be aiming to take the PS3 online shooter crown from Activision's massively successful Call of Duty 4 when it arrives later this year.
The online-focused shooter will let up to 32 players fight in seven maps in battles of strategy and teamwork via PSN. Soldiers will be customisable, with weapons set by the player for the job at hand.
The game will promote clans, with a recruitment feature that allows you to group up with "free agents" or friends, with one player serving as the Squad Leader.
"Featuring some of the most highly trained Special Forces regiments in the world, SOCOM: Confrontation is, like all true military scenarios, all about strategy and teamwork," explains Sony.
"Reward your troops not only when they are brave and fearless but when they use intelligence and work as a team. Trawl the world for the best soldiers to strengthen your team as you lead your men against other highly skilled outfits."
Online play will be backed by a dedicated site, SOCOM.com, where players can find stat tracking features and manage their teams even when out of reach of their PS3s.
Regular downloads will also be made available, "including new Special Forces characters weapons and maps," and regular online tournaments will also give you plenty of opportunities to prove your skills. Sony details: "Choose from pre-set tournaments tailored to your schedule; these run on weekdays and weekends and are split on a regional and global basis."
Sony says the game will boast "unrivalled community features with increased clan & ladder support."

Wow you guys missed out on some of the best times to play an online shooter. The servers are still up for all the Socom games and I'm sure you can find Socom 1 and 2 for extremely cheap now, so I recommend just picking them up and trying them out. Socom 1 was by far the best online gaming experience in the series, but Socom 2 was still pretty damn fun too. You guys will probably enjoy this Socom regardless because you won't really have anything to compare it to considering you never played any of the other Socom (PS2 versions) games in the series.

maybe the closest I got is with GRAW 1. though I coldn't take it online, it was a really good tactical 3rd person shooter. and that's how I expect SOCOM to be. I'll be watching this release very closely. all i need is some clear video of proper gameplay and I know if it's what I want or not. plus, being a PSN release is always an attractive point for me since it would be cheaper and more readily available than the disc based games.

Socom virgin here as well, but the prospect of having a multiplayer game on my PS3 that's readily accessible gives me a good touch feeling. I think this will be the year of the military game/shooter for me, but once FFXIII and WKC come out (and Folklore is a budget title), it's back to the RPG fag Sony made me into.
EDIT: GRAW 2 looked lik hot ass on a platter from my 27" SDTV, so I hope Confrontation neither looks nor plays like it. I was watching some old SOCOM2 vids on youtube and found them to be quite enjoyable. I'm really starting to dig the whole "squad" thing, which is why I'm so pumped for Haze and R2's co-op modes.

Plus if you get Socom II, you can play CrossStreets! IN the new Socom they re-did it PS3 style..so you can see how it is layed out in Socom II and see how it compares with the new and improved CrossStreets.
One of my fav. maps on Socom II was the one where it was at night and you had to either defend the base (as terriorist) and the seals has to figure out a way to get into the base and blow it up. (not the desert one, but the one where it takes place in the slums of a city).

You guys have me mad hyped. I'm waiting for this to load right now lol. I loved SOCOM although I could never play it online.
I've only played Combined Assault thoroughly also. Even CA wasn't apparently the best in the series by a longshot, yet it was still a great game. Says a lot about SOCOM's record of solid iterations.
Edit - Damn! Page 4 looks hawt.

Seriously? I didn't know to be honest. I haven't played the others for the longest time. I had only been able to rent SOCOM and SOCOM II (not even sure if I played SOCOM II).
The grenade physics is really cool and all, but that pales in comparison to a waaaaay cooler feature I think - the cover system. Sounds pure ace.
Sounds spectacular on the whole, just finished going through it. I think we knew the general features already though, but it was good reinforcement for the polish going into the gameplay :D

Did anyone else notice that in most of the screens the player character seems to always be in an interesting pose?
It's different for many of the screens, and somehow a few of them even kind of make it feel like what the character is doing would look natural.
Page 6's largest picture is a good example of this. It just looks very slick.
It's kind of cool how they are getting that impression out with a picture. Looks nice. Nice colours and contrast and clarity for the rest of the graphics too which is cool, very easy on the eyes.

That was something S2 did pretty well too.
For a PS2 game of course, death animations were stupid at some times though.
The animations itself were nice but no ragdoll, that was a bit strange on stairs for example. lol

Oh yeah, Socom 2's animation system was very nice, it made the game feel even better because all the animations were so "cool" it gave you a cool feeling moving, aiming, throwing grenades etc. Socom 3 ruined it pretty much with its goofy animations (like it ruined everything else too in the series :p) but hopefully in this one it's back to S2's system with some nice additions of course now that they have better hardware to work with.
Socom 2 is still the best multiplayer shooter ever basically and I cant imagine how amazing it would be if they somehow managed to capture the essence of Socom on PS3. Would probably mean the death of all other games for me. :p
Great f'n music in that Crossroads vid btw!

I think the biggest gripe with Socom 3 was the departure from the experience created by the two previous games. On the most part Socom primarily delt with close quarters combat and had a few maps that were larger in scope.
Socom 3 was very ambitious and introduced a lot of new elements to the Socom experience, but the gameplay and pacing made the overall title a completely different game just with the Socom name. It's promising that Sony and Six Slant seem to understand this and will take this into consideration with Socom Confrontations...

But the m16 is only burst fire. I raped ass with that gun on socom 1 and 2, but on 3 it was severely weakened. Just felt so much different I don't think I even used it as my primary gun. I stopped playing socom 3 after only a few months.

Yeah, the guns felt completely different (just like everything else in the game too). They were WAY too much spray&pray whereas in S2 the guns had the perfect amount of recoil/accuracy and firefights were always about skill. Also I hated that they changed the look of the "aiming sight" (wtf is this called, I don't remember!) when they were perfect in S2. In S3 they were toy-like, very ugly..

So much hate for S3... I thought S3 had a lot of great parts to it, especially the beefed up community and I can't think of any other PS2 games that had 32 players online. Attachments, vehicles, swimming -- S3 was really good IMO :)

Socom 3 was good, it was just that the weapons were changed too much, then the maps were too big. It was no where in the realms of socom 1 and 2 in terms of greatness.

i put it in to my ps3 (Socom3) and it was like watching a slide show lol. MGS on ps1 looked better than socom 3
It was not Zippers fault that they included bigger maps and vehicles. It was the fault of the US Socom Community.
In a servey they wanted bigger maps and vehicles. And this was the time were the socom flair was gone and the game changed in a poor battlefield clone even it was'nt an ego shooter.
Good that confrontation goes back to the roots. I own Socom 1/2/3 Assault i haven't bought it was like Socom 3.

^^ I think many thought the idea of vehicles did not sound bad, but when you think it through the larger maps required for vehicles change the overall feel of the game. I think some of the larger Socom 2 maps could have used a light truck or jeep, but overall the game should have stuck with the small close quarters maps. I think this is the reason some of the Socom crowd has gotten into COD4, because the small tight maps give you that Socom pacing, but it's an FPS... I wish you could play COD4 in 3rd person like the spectator mode that would give Socom a real run for it's money... Honestly COD4 is the first FPS I really got into, but I'm still a fan of 3rd person shooters. If they manage to get the vibe of Socom 2 and don't screw up the online experience I will log many hours on Socom Confrontations. :guns:

Closed beta for Confrontation :
Ok, folks, it’s time to start phase 2 of the Closed Beta selection. Please read the following instructions carefully before posting in this thread.
Check to see if you were nominated as a community leader. Thanks to mr_sneaky, there is a complete list here. If your name is on that list, you are already in the pool of potential testers.
If your name does not appear on that list, make a post in this thread answering the following questions and post only once:
*How long have you been playing games from the SOCOM franchise?
*What SOCOM games have you played?
*Are you in a clan?
*Tell me in one paragraph why you want to be in the closed Beta
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
The closed Beta participants will be selected from a large pool of players with varying degrees of participation on the forums and various backgrounds of SOCOM playing history. This is a small group so there will be a lot of people that won’t get into this closed Beta. I am compiling lists of each group of players (community leaders, long time players, newer players, etc.) and the participants will be chosen from these groups, depending on what is needed as the testing is done. So please be honest about your experience. Since we want people from varied backgrounds of playing, that’s important. I want to thank you all for your interest and enthusiasm and I wish we could invite everyone into this closed Beta. But it will be a small group to start with until we get to the open Beta. I apologize in advance if you do not get into this phase. Please don’t take it personally. Selecting a small group of testers from such a huge group of people that wish to participate is not easy. The goal here is to get a well rounded group of testers that can offer a great range of feedback. Please keep this thread on track and only post with information listed above. It’s going to be challenging enough to go through all of these posts and sort them out. Please don’t clutter the thread with other questions and comments. Please start another thread for that. Thanks so much for your patience and understanding and I wish you all good luck!

It has been known ever since the game was announced.
Slant Six is really trying to take the series back to its roots, it's evident in everything they say. Though I'm worried about 16v16 maps and the fact that every map supports multiple modes. The maps can't be as good as S2 maps I'm afraid.

Yeah, many of S2's best maps were actually S1 maps. Blizzard, DG, NS (FF and Ruins in open servers, not as much in clan matches) etc. But S2 had its own amazing maps as well (like Requiem, Cross, Mixer once clans learned how to play as terrorists against the seal camp in the warehouse, Foxhunt, Guidance once clans learned how to play it properly on both sides etc..).

We had our times where we were awesome, but we also had our "scrub moments" We were 50% legit and 50% complete jackasses, and I know we had a listing on GB but I don't know if we kept it updated, we were more into meeting up online without any planning, finding a clan with enough people to do a battle, and we'd fight 'em. I hope this is considerably different from MGO cuz I'd like to get both.

The visuals are good enough if they get the gameplay right and the Socom 2 feel...
*I don't think people are expecting COD4 visual quality in a PSN release.*
Also, the online experience has to be spot on from the release no patch shit to fix rushed screw ups...
there has to be a demo for this game or I am not buying it. CaC was one mistake too many. I am sure there is a lot of charm to this game, but for me, for a game like this, if I don't like the controls one bit I simply skip an entire game. I absolutely hate MGO. I absolutely loved GRAW 1 off-line. I never played a SOCOM game, so if I can't sit down and try it and play with the controls for a bit, I won't take the jump. there are other games coming out that I know I'll like them without trying them and I don't want to make any mistakes with this one- especially that main dev isn't making it.
PS. hype alone isn't enough when it comes to gameplay. I hate how Syphone Filter plays.

If you loved GRAW I dont think you'll have problems controlling Socom. Afterall, GRAW pretty much copied Socom and it feels a lot like it, just slower and not as smooth and great.
And about the main dev, I think Slant Six gets the series better than the main devs. They lost the focus a long time ago and I'm not expecting anything out of their next game. Maybe they'll surprise me but I have a lot more faith in SS atm.

Not sure if I'd go that far, as I think Zipper's also made a lot of wonderful improvements to the series that went unrecognised, but maybe it isn't for better or for worse that Zipper's doing newer things and Slant Six is doing the S2-faithful a favour ;)
I'll give it to them that SS did make rave SOCOM games on PSP. I am always amazed on how powerful the PSP is and how some devs could work some magic on it.

wow, then I am impressed. sill though, I need a demo. looking on how famous the franchise is, I don't think they'll offer one though- or for Wipeout for that matter. if they don't I'll try if I can get to try it in a store or something- though it is more difficult with pure PSN games. and I don't know anyone with a PS3- that well.

If that's the case Z you might as well skip this game, but maintain in your mind that you are probably going to skip the best online experience over any game. I'm sure there won't be a demo considering it's online only. This game is going to be nothing like MGO, but I enjoy MGO.

Socom never gained the top spot as a visually impressive master piece when compared to other competitive shooters out there; the gameplay is where the title exceled and had been labeled as a recommended master piece.
On another topic, I want to see Syphon Filter - as this game exceled at weapons but also a [little] bit easier on the eyes.
the game could be the best, but until I play it, I may not bod well with the controls. for example, I love GT for what it can do, but I cannot play simulation racers to sav my life. so I just tent to see it played in front of me or watch vids.
I'll try to give this a go if I can, but I can't jump in to a game I never played or even have an idea how it controls.
Unlike Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which increases the range of selectable weapons as you progress, everything will be unlocked out of the box for SOCOM. Ammunition bonuses will be the suggested reward once you've received the required number of points

If that's the case then why don't you go pick up socom 1 or 2 in a bargain ben some where like gamestop and give the online a try. Hell I'll even get on and play it with you if you'd like. You get the best of both worlds this way. You get to try out a Socom title and you don't have to "jump" into it completely blind folded because there's no other way you're gonna be able to try this game unless you have a friend that is downloading it regardless and you can try it out there.

Game itself looks great (still "pre"-Alpha dont forget this) but the exploding cars are shit.
I think this will ruin the whole gameplay, its unrealistic, looks stupid, you cant use them as cover because they blow up way too fast and theyre just dumb.

I think the visuals are acceptable; I was not expecting COD4 visual quality with a PSN release... If the gameplay is right and I get that classic Socom feel from the gameplay I will be very happy. I hope they quickly release some of the old maps and it would be great if they could do some type of cross-marketing to make the maps free. *Discovery channel and Gear of War comes to mind...*

Agreed. Haze guy sucked ass, KZ2 guy sucked mega ass, and this SOCOM dude rounds out the unholy trinity of suck. Pull some fucking devs aside to play this shit. The only game I've seen so far where the guy didn't blow major balls was the MGS4 gameplay demo guy from Japan. He was fucking awesome.

yeah, i thought the cars exploded way too ealy and without warning (like smoke or flames first). thy guy was showing how you can break the car's windows and suddenly, the whle thing blew up. I'll just consider the, as fuel barrels then.
I do like how it only takes a few shots to kill someone. I hate it when you have to finish an entire clip and the guy is still standing. I want fast pace and precise action in my shooters and this seems to deliver. the graphics really annoy me though. I can't help but feel I'm playing a PS2 title. when everything else is looking good to amazing, it is hard to step back a bit.

Haze looks dreadful GTA looks dreadful lol alot of games are really wanting this GEN. but i will still Purchace & play... SC that is
I wouldn't say 'dreadful'. they look good, or at least alright. you got to keep in mind that the devs behind those aren't known for their graphics- that and the sheer size of the latter.
I wonder when's the new Ghost Recon coming out? the first game was extremely impressive when it came out very early when 360 was the only next gen system out. I don't think they make
