LOL... you're excited then. this doesn't verify that Blu-ray will win, it just verifies that the pointless war that Toshiba and MS have been dragging out will end sooner. Blu-ray won as soon as the PS3 was released

Well, Blu-ray is an integral part of PS3, so in a way it belongs here. A mod will just move it or lock it soon though, too bad the title isn't clear enough.

I have decided to reopen the thread (even though historically all BD related news is to be put in Tech. Central) primarily because it is big news for Sony and to a lesser extent the PS3 as well. in addition to the large amount of attention this is drawing from all over the internet.

this is my worry. if they don't go Blu-ray, this could persuade devs to create more linear games because of their growing size. if they do, forget having huge worlds like GTASA.

2007 box office share

Please note that New Line Cinema is a subsidiary of Warner Bros (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Line_Cinema), so I guess it'll become Blu-ray exclusive eventually. Also, the Paramount HD-DVD deal is only for 18 months and it does NOT include the Spielberg movies (http://www.blu-ray.com/news/index.php?id=412).

^is that based on DVD sales or 2007's box office which was a little skewed compared to previous years.

Anyway, I'm so glad that WB made this move. We the consumers deserve the best product and not the "cheapest to initially produce" ewwness HD-DVD is.

We need a product with enough disc space and read speed to actually provide the bit-rate needed by the supported video codecs.

Honestly Im not sure if users can change their own thread titles. To do this go to the main page and double click on the box showing the thread and it will highlight the title, do not double click on the title.

If you are unable to I will change it for you.

Edit: lol I will change title to something more simple.

the significance of this isn't better PS3 sales, but that many shops like Virgin and HMV have more reason to make a choice to go Blu-ray only. when that happens, give it a few months for people to get Blu-ray savvy and those doubters to eventually plump for the format of choice and, yes, perhaps that will help the sales of PS3

It can sell a bit more hardware, and some people who buy a PS3 for its Blu-ray capabilities might end up becoming HD gamers. I'd say there might be some people on the fence that will be getting one now as well, but then again this shouldn't mean a huge hardware sales boost. It certainly won't hurt though.

Anyway, Sony needs to keep marketing the gaming side of PS3 further than they have so far.

Did Warner Brothers Just Kill HD DVD?

By Saul Hansell

Tags: Blu ray, HD DVD, video, warner brothers

In addition to Apple, Warner Brothers is now going to throw its weight behind the Blu-ray format for high-definition disks. Warner has been the only major studio to publish its movies in both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Today, the studio announced that from now on, it would only issue movies in Blu-ray.

Until now, the war between the formats has seemed like a standoff. Of the big studios, Disney, Fox and Sony have backed Blu-ray. NBC Universal and Viacom back HD DVD.

Richard Greenfield, the media analyst with Pali Research, wrote that this marks the end of the format wars: “We expect HD DVD to ‘die’ a quick death.” He noted that NBC Universal has not committed to backing HD DVD exclusively. Viacom’s studios — Paramount and Dreamworks — have an exclusive deal with the backers of HD DVD, but Mr. Greenfield wonders if there is an escape clause.

Mr. Greenfield further wonders if consumers, on hearing this news, will return their Christmas HD DVD players and exchange them for Blu-ray devices. I’m not so sure that many people pay that close attention to Hollywood. But I certainly wouldn’t spend money on an HD DVD player until this all sorts out.

Paramount and Dreamworks deals are only temporary and do not include Spielberg movies, which are being released on Blu-ray.

I'm surprised Weinstein is HD-DVD. Weinstein used to be under Viacom with blockbuster, then blockbuster split off and is siding with bluray more for rentals (they should be getting a bluray section soon in many many stores). Weinstein is exclusive rental at blockbuster, yet is HD-DVD which most stores are not getting for rent. So they kinda shot themselves in the foot since they are exclusive to rent at one location that doesn't fully support the HD format they chose to produce on. I guess you can't rent their HD movies at all unless you go online. DVD is still locked to one company too (supposedly).

Huh...

The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement.
