Try SUPER, it's a free amazing video convertor, and it even has a PS3 mode. It was last updated July 4th, so the PS3 profile doesn't do DIVX, but you can just select to use an AVI container, with DIVX video and MP3 audio to get a compliant DIVX file. I don't think the PS3 cares about the framerate, bitrate, or sampling frequency; the obvious higher = better rule applies. But of course, you plateau somewhere, so setting them all super high will just give you a huge file that has the same quality as a smaller file made with lesser settings would.

You can get SUPER here (http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html).

As far as I know, since the PS3 is not a DivX certified device (yet, but it will be), it supports DivX playback (and some XviD) as long as you're not using a custom matrix to encode the file. Otherwise, DivX files work fine, no matter they're SD or HD. I think there are also issues with 5.1 sound within either a DivX or WMV file, but as long as it's 2.0 it works.

I use Super. It works great. Ps3 video 9 is shockingly bad.

I thought it was Divx certified... but

Using Divx is a wee bit complicated. The resolution of the video must be divisable by 16 in both height and width. Problem is, some of my videos (especially tv recordings) are not compliant with this, hence I need to reencode those, sadly.

I use Xvid4PSP to reencode my stuff to either Xvid or X264 (if HD content). It's free and has not problems with any material you throw at it (it uses avisynth).

I've been using that one to convert .flv files from YouTube into .mp4 for my iPod (or is it .mov? I can't remember). Haven't tried using it for DivX stuff yet because I don't have a working PC :cry2:

I don't think, MythTV is actually the program you want to use for watching videos. (it works, but imho it still is much too buggy to be usable)

There's another Media Center software for Linux, of which the name I can't remember atm (I use VDR, but thats strictly for watching tv), but since it is integrated into Ubuntu, you should be able to find it :D

It's just called LinuxMCE, you use Ubuntu as it's base so it's fairly stable right from the start. There is some crazy cool stuff you can do with it.

I have TV streaming perfectly, there's a good guide on the psubuntu website... and you can use pretty much any player with it soooo i think it will work.

Linux MCE uses mythtv stuff... or did when the first beta came out, and also uses mplayer which is the same player mythtv uses by default.

Hi Paul, the DivX Certification of PS3 is still on-going. The first stage was the software update that recently went out, but there is more functionality to add. Ultimately PS3s will ship with the all the elements of Certification, but we are still working on it.

Naa, I didn't mean MCE, I meant something else... Elisa it is (or some other girls name, dunno)

But if Myth works, good for you!

Yep, Elisa media center. It's still in really early stages right now. But it's coming along, i'm using it.

Well I'm still not a PS3 owner but I do it all the time for my PS2 (used as entertainment center in our garage).

VirtualDub + k-lite codec pack, both are freeware and prefect for changing containers (no quality loss) plus the net is filled with "how to" VirtualDub guides for every kind of codec re/trans-coding. ^.^
