Major Japanese Publisher Working on PSN Remakes
According to EGM, a major publisher is remaking games for PSN.
By Sam Kennedy, 01/04/2008

Another cool tidbit from the latest issue of EGM... According to rumor and gossip guru Quarterman, Sony has inked a deal with a major Japanese third-party publisher to remake some of its classic games on PSN.

As for which publisher this is, the magazine doesn't reveal. Could it be Konami? A remake of Contra or Castlevania could be pretty sweet. Or Capcom? Ghosts & Goblins or Strider please. Or maybe even Square Enix? Chrono Trigger = OMG.

OK, enough getting carried away with speculation -- we'll just have to wait and see. In any case, though, this should come as good news for PSN users.

I would be over joyed with Konami, Capcom, or Square Enix. Any of those companies older games would very welcome additions to my PS3 and PSP.

Hell yea. CT is the only RPG I can bear to play nowadays, and I'd much rather be playing it on a console than on an emulator. I'd love to have a few of the MegaMan games too, they kick butt.

Well I would like it to be SNK, although Im not sure one can consider them a "major Japanese publisher".

Did they make the Metal Slug games?

Those games were cool, I used to have one on the NeoGeo, can't remember which one though. Had one of the PS2 ones too, number 5 I think.

I think SNK already began their motions to revive old franchises some time ago. One of the last things I was working on back in Dallas was what ultimately became Metal Slug Anthology for the PSP, and we were making bids for a few other old SNK franchise revivals at the time. I don't think any others came to fruition though.

If you ever have anything to do with SNK Playmore revivals, push for KOF98 on PSN with online multiplayer.

Namco Bandai also has some stuff to remake :-p

I vote "no fighting games," as they've been banned from my PS3

Sega/Sammy would be nice but we'll wait and see what comes up.

Seeing as how I'm no longer working at an independent developer studio, there's pretty near no chance of my being involved with any such revival. Short of SNK being bought out and subsumed into Eidos, or my taking on a new job at an independent developer with no specific ties to any one publisher again, you'll have to ask someone else... moreover, the fact that I'm not a studio director or in a major production role means that even if those things happen, you'd still have to ask someone else.

If it's any indication, one project we were bidding for at TRI about 3 years ago (though I think the project died with no real "winner" in the bidding war) was a revival of Samurai Shodown.

Besides which, you guys should already be aware of at least one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex_3) franchise revival Eidos is working on as it is. I hardly think we'd let ourselves get busy with another belonging to some other publisher.

I'd be happy with Sega/Sammy, Namco Bandai, Square Enix, Capcom or SNK Playmore.

Too bad it is only one 3rd party. Hopefully this will lead to more of them following suit.

If it's koei, I'm gonna just be realllly disappointed. I mean, that's top let down of the year and we haven't even gotten started with 2008.
