I liked the demo, but I will hold off on a purchase. LittleBigPlanet and Fallout 3 will be enough for me, untill Killzone 2 is released.

I fancied this till I saw it reviewed on t.v. 5 to 7 hours gameplay with no multi player. It will be about the same price as LBP yet have about 10% the value. Once those 5 to 7 hours are up. Did someone say rental!

5 to 7 hours gameplay

Dont have the money for an 8 hours single player only game.
I still want to play it, should give you a great feeling.

I think DICE said something about 8-12 hours, so it should take 7-8.
Dont quote me on that though, could be other wise when the game is out, but its for sure not longer than Uncharted for example.

 Oh dear...

8 / 10 from Eurogamer.

After reading through that review, the 8/10 score seems pretty generous.

The demo = Day one purchase
Reviews & forum comments = Rental

Considering all the games being released this holiday season I can't justify paying $60 more bucks for a game I could knock off in a few days on a rental... It sucks, because the developer deserves good sales for a quality title that is fresh & new.

The first person perspective still seems like something of a token gesture to me - what does it really add to the game?

If it was primarily a game that benefited from the FP perspective (i.e. something that requires a lot of character interaction and/or shooting) then fair enough, FP parkour would be a funky addition, but as it stands all we have a game that's focused purely on moving through a level as fast as possible.

It's a groovy concept but it needs massively expanding on to be more than a people-racing game.

When it's all going well, you move like an urban ballerina. When it gets fiddly, however, you feel like the Elephant Man trying rollerblades for the first time, and for the first half-hour at least, the learning curve is a straight line that plummets over the edge of a rooftop into swift oblivion.

Eurogamer makes me laugh, I should read their reviews more often.

That's what they gave MGS4 too :pinky:

apart from one wall texture and finger details being slightly better on the PS3, bit are identical:

IGN say it's a bit cleaner on PS3, and they prefer the Dualshock controls too.

I played the demo on both and liked the controller feel better on the ps3. Though angela pre-ordered it on 360 so I will be playing it on that, plus achievements. Will be getting it tomorrow.

It has trophies on PS3.

Yeah, trophy support had been confirmed for this title in this thread a while ago. But yeah, achievements.

I'll give it a go this Christmas once my monetary situation with my school is settled.

It was cool.

I finally got it today, gotta play it soon. I also got the promo bag, which is awesome. It only has the ME logo, so I don't have to be embarrassed by carrying an EA logo. It's quite good, someone would probably charge like 20 € for it in a shop.

YOSHAW'S REVIEW
Finished the game (Weekend here). I'd say it's a pretty decent game. The trial n error gameplay had me annoyed more than I wanted to. The game is pretty short. Hardly 6-8 hours I'd say.

Level design was refreshing but the corresponding gameplay became repetitive after a short while. Hand to hand combat felt pretty engaging. There were moments where I was literally scrambling for cover yet still be able to unarm a submachine from nearest foe if timed perfectly with slo-mo. I wish the hand to hand combat was as visceral as Riddick's..... Alas!

The story is totally whack!! One of the most ridiculously animated interval fmvs. Gosh, they seriously dropped the ball on showcasing Faith as a sexy roof jumping hotness. Alas~

My overall impression. It's a nice game.

Rent it.

I played both demo versions & if you are using HDMI with a properly configured display the visuals are damn near identical. The PS3 does seem to handle the colors / lighting a bit more naturally, but the PS3 controller is the true factor that made me prefer the title on that platform. Also the Sixaxis controls are done fairly well...

I'm liking it so far, even though it's quite linear. All trophies seem achievable and should give it replay value as long as you like it. The storyline will probably suck, but as long as it's a good ride...

Fairly stumped on a few time trials though... 3 stars is tricky on some.

Huh? The controls are great to me and it's easy to solve every situation with some thinking. If you don't seem to be succeeding in some places, give it another thought or try getting some ideas from the tutorial.

It's not so short. I've been playing it over a few days already no less than one hour each day, and I'm still at 50%. It might be that short if you become an expert and know how to beat each level, but that's not going to happen before you finish the game at least once.

The controls are fine and I know exactly what to do, the problem is faith doesn't grab onto things when she should.

I finished Mirror's Edge yesterday. Minireview:

The bad:

- Awful storyline. No interesting characters, poor cutscenes, nothing really exciting happens, feels pointless all the time. The point of having runners is to carry info and stuff in their bags and this has nearly no relevance in the game at all. An unlocked extra reveals the first versions of the script focused on this, I wonder why that changed. Boring overall.

- Character design. Uninspired at best.

The meh:

- Music: the main theme is nice, but everything else doesn't really stand out.

- Voice acting: since the storyline feels like it's there for the sake of it, you won't really care about what the characters have to say.

The good:

- Sound design + first person view: amazing feeling. It really feels like you're up there jumping from one roof to another.

- The core gameplay is rather solid and somewhat varied. The controls might seem weird at first but you get easily used to them. Some thinking is required sometimes, but it is rewarding and not frustrating. You can beat the game without shooting, adding extra challenge.

- Great graphics and environment art, looking photorealistic many times. Excellent attention to indirect lighting.

- Not as short as some reviewers state, although I'm no speed gamer anyway. There are extra gameplay modes that extend its life.

- The trophies do encourage you to play the game the way it's meant to be played.

Woah...

That looks... fuckin intense.

Digital parkour. They've had this in the bag for a while now. Impressive that they've kept it so secret.

We are going to see some unbelievable videos come out of this.

I still think the mechanics were very iffy but the fps genre has a lot to learn from mirror's edge.

Im busy playing the PS3 version of Mirrors edge and on chapter 6 when i take out some snipers get to ground level passing some trucks and enter a red door my game keeps freezing in this room while i ascend the stairs. Anyone else had this problem?

Eventually worked after the 7th try.

Just finished up the game and really enjoyed it. There were a few irritations but great game overall. When you get in the flow and Faith moves at bullet speed it feels great. Loved the theme song also and hoping for a sequel. Nice job EA and Dice.

I had to use guns by chapter 6 cause it got ridiculously hard to just unarm enemies while three others were shooting at you at the same time especially in chapter 6. Did anyone manage to finish the game without using a gun?

VG Aficionado
12-22-2008, 10:20 AM
Me :cowboy: And I've got the feeling that if I play the game on hard difficulty and even without runner vision, it's going to be easier with guns.

Well done VG i saw my ass in chapter 6 in the offices level after you open a garage door to enter the level and just had to use a gun after disarming the first guy. Once you kill the firsty guy with a gun you feel like shit and then might aswell keep using them.

OK, I just finished the game myself, and I pretty much agree with all of the points you made above, VG. The storyline is pretty lame, but then, I wasn't really expecting some blockbuster of a story for a parkour game.

The voice acting was your standard fare, but I did like the soundtrack. Thought it did well enough in setting the scene.

I had a few issues with the bulk of the gameplay, the jumping and grabbing. It was sometimes frustrating when I knew exactly what I needed to do to progress, but having to wrestle with the character to make her actually do it. Not being able to climb up things when in a particular position, getting caught on objects when trying to jump, that kind of thing. Luckily, those problems didn't pop up too often. Most of the time, the gameplay was great, and it gives you a great deal of satisfaction when you pull off a string of fancy jumps, ending with landing a flying kick to the head of a copper :)

I really liked the whole style of the game, the vibrant colour of the corridors and buldings. Makes a very nice change to the gun-metal grey and brown we're used to seeing in the majority of games nowadays.

As for the length, it was about the length I was expecting. It's only taken me two afternoons to get through the game, and that included getting all 30 of the bags, so I would say that I spent roughly 5 or 6 hours on it. I think that it would've been hard to stretch it out longer than that, without making it a chore to finish. Oh yea, and there's always the time trials to go through, which will add a lot more play time, depending on if you're into speed runs.

All in all, a decent enough game. As a concept, I think it's brilliant, it just needed to be executed a little bit better.

I expected a very different storyline. Not MGS level, but at least related to what they first reported about the game. It felt different in the first screenshots and interviews too, so I feel it changed for the worse. The writer isn't a very reputed one anyway.
