Oh don't get me wrong, I have no problem with FPS games, just the ridiculous amount of them, and how average 80-90% of them are.

Well it is said that it's not really a fps. but an action game with a first person view. the game is really really linear but the devs promessed a lots of interaction and actions that you can do. But it will be very linear. The view reminds me of " Breakdown" on xbox which used a fps view too if i remember.

Same here. As long as there's something unique and interesting to it I might even like it, but I agree I don't care about 90% of FPS games out there.

Was Breakdown the first-person fighting game? I remember somebody mentioning that game to me a while back.

Anyway, if it's true that there's a lot of interaction and not just endless shooting, then I'll keep an eye on this one.

Here's an article from July 2007 on this game (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6598&Itemid=51), I had no idea it had been revealed already although the screenshots seem new and in-game for the first time. The concept seems interesting, but we'll see.

This fps was really overlooked for some bigger hitters but i gottta tell ya using time abilities really makes the fps gunplay damn satisfying i would reccomend it to all of you looking for a good fps till Haze arrives if you guys have already beaten Orange box and Call od duty 4 that is.

Back on topic: so whats the premise of this game anyone know?

They always get the 1st person camera wrong in games.

When you kick someone or jump, you can't see your legs and hands that clearly...

What happened to using motion blur and focusing to make it feel like you are really kicking someone (I know these are screenshots but they usually edit it to let you know that they are using motion blur).

Maybe it's not that obvious in motion.
Darkness did a pretty good job of handling the 1st person feeling.

Jumping rooftops should be a thrilling experience, I assume. I'm afraid of heights so I always get this wobbly feeling in the guts whenever I look down from heights LOL. Let's see what happens when I play this game =P

Is it me or is the FPS genre just being run into the ground? And that's not to say that there aren't good ones out there. Just that there seems to be too many being produced. I'm willing to give this a chance cause the idea behind it seems interesting, but I gotta admit I'm getting tired of first person shooters as a whole.

Even more impressive was the way the game simulated running. After a few steps, Faith picked up speed—between the subtle camera bobbing and the way that inertia seemed to affect her movement, it was as close to the actual motion as we’ve seen.

I would really like this game to incorporate the PSEye for in game controls.

Imagine this...

-tilting your head alters the in-game perspective
-running/walking/jogging...whatever...on the spot makes you move as you please.
-kicking and punching will do the same in-game (accuracy and speed dependent engine)
-ducking makes you duck.
-jumping makes you jump.
-moving your arms/giving someone the finger...same would be shown on screen.
-grab/throw things as you please.
-first/third party peripherals for weapons but not necessary to use a gun in game. A trigger button should be usable on a ps controller for this.
-crossing your hands to form a 'T' shape, pauses the game and would bring up various game menus which can be altered by hand gestures.
-tilting your head down a bit shows your characters body for inventory purposes.
-tilting your body alters body positioning...allows for a free flow movement system.

This is exactly what this game would need to be great. I can only hope for something like this to be implemented cause I'm not holding my breath this gen.

Then again...this game would be in a league of its own.

Imagine the possibilities... (fingers crossed)

but jumping shaking head ducking... hmm

i would get sick of ducking and jumping in my room in front of my tv veeery fast.

It would have a large user base none the less.

Not to mention it would fit in nicely with the 'free running' style play shown in the shots.

This would really put ppl in a unique position gaming wise and you would either love it or hate it.

I'm pretty sure that the responsiveness in the motion tracking of the Eye would be pretty spot on if attempted. This isn't the PS2 u know ;)

i mean some body movements translated to fast action 3d game in fpp.

Nope. Like I said. Running on the spot would make your character run. And it wouldn't have to mean you actually going hard in order to make the character run faster either. Perhaps this would depend on difficulty settings to make things more physically demanding on the gamer.

Bottom line...laziness aside...it would make it that much more exciting.

Not to mention that I believe that it would work just fine. The games engine would have to be based on a free flowing design to make it work. There are ways. The question is are there any companies willing to try?

Mirror's Edge First Look
GAME INFO
publisher: EA
developer: DICE
genre: Action Adventure

release date: 2008
» All About Mirror's Edge on ActionTrip

For the past several months, EA stood behind many projects, continuing its promised effort to deliver innovative games to the PC and console market. The problem is that most of the games recently released by EA haven't exactly delivered on that promise. The company's strategy to "innovate" has backfired in many cases, hence EA quite literarily succeeded in ruining a few very popular franchises - think Need for Speed: Pro Street, SimCity Societies, etc.

Anybody can make this jump.

No, I don't want to go to second base.

However, as much as we are reserved about EA's inclination to drill for originality in exhausted game licenses, it seems there are certain projects on the horizon, which definitely could bring something unique to the world of video games.

The name Mirror's Edge has been circling the Web for more than a year. It wasn't until recently that EA decided to treat us to in-game media, as well as more information on what this secretive project is about.

Coming from DICE, the creators of Battlefield, Mirror's Edge represents an interesting and fun take on the first-person action formula.

You'll get to play as a character named Faith. As we understand it, Faith's parents were killed and she (yep, she's a girl) was forced to grow up on the street. Faith was taught not to rely on modern forms of communication, partially because the ruthless police state prefers eavesdropping every chance they get. So, electronic communication is out. The society Faith lives in is made to look like an honest-to-God utopia, with streets and skyscrapers so damn shiny and clean you could eat your dinner off them. So, she decides to become a "runner." In case you're wondering, runners are basically messengers, except in Mirror's Edge they are more fast and nimble than you'd normally expect. Now, runners aren't necessarily criminals themselves, but they are forced to work for people who's names have at one time or another been associated with crime. Eventually, Faith gets caught up in a series of events which lead to her being pursued by the totalitarian government. Acting as Faith's guide through all this, is a mysterious character named Mercury (whom we know very little about at this point). (At least they didn't call him Morpheus, eh? - 2Lions) It was noted that Mercury will help Faith in her attempt to outwit and overcome many government agents that are going to want her out of the way.

Our heroine won't be equipped with the standard military hardware most macho male protagonists prefer wielding. More often than not, Faith's best ally is her agility, speed and the knack for parkour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkour).

The feel of the game should be unlike anything we've experienced in first-person action games. The free-flowing camera tracks every movement of the main character in a fluent and natural way. As soon as you start walking the camera bobs in-sync with the character's movement. Granted, a lot of games featured such a dynamic camera, but when Faith jogs or starts moving more aggressively, players will notice a few cool innovative aspects. As the character starts running, the camera pans similarly to the way your head would in real life. This makes for a rather realistic first-person depiction of actual sprinting. Faith's arms and legs are shown, moving up and down as she gains speed or tries to leap onto specific surfaces.

This may sound a wee bit chaotic and too much to handle for players. DICE, however, provides a solution so you don't get confused and disoriented while trying to maneuver through the surroundings. In order for players to spot crucial objects and points of interest in the area, the developers created something called Runner Vision. This handy little feature helps gamers distinguish the route ahead, as they dash across building rooftops, in an effort to avoid enemies or reach a certain location. Usable objects and surfaces you can interact with will glow in a bright shade of red - easily spotted in the largely white and bluish environment. Sometimes there won't be time to stand around, lollygagging, so if you notice a red crane on the nearby building, just run towards it. Other objects of interest are marked with red too, such as drain pipes, doors than you can open or smash through, etc.

Using Runner Vision denotes a variety of maneuvers and moves, which you will be able to combine throughout the game, in order to outpace any pursuers. There will be plenty of situations where Faith will simply be forced to face opponents head on, instead of outrunning them. This brings us to combat and shooting. While Mirror's Edge features both, it appears it's going to be slightly different than in other action games. Faith often uses her agility to disarm foes, rather than firing a weapon. Fair enough, she is able to handle a gun when she nabs one, but as we understand it, guns are sort of a temporary benefit that won't do you much good when you've fired all the bullets in the clip. Again, parkour is at the heart of the gameplay. So, most of the time, our heroine relies on her ability to duck, dodge or dive to avoid being gunned down.

The inevitable Matrix feel is there, of course. Most of the chase scenes will remind you of Neo and Trinity, as they try to elude persistent agents. Since we brought up The Matrix, it appears that DICE is going to offer its own take on Bullet Time, which they are calling Reaction Time. You accumulate Reaction Time by pulling off a number of slick acrobatic moves. Reaction Time (i.e. slowing down time) is best suited for fine-tuning huge leaps or executing more complex moves.

This does not bode well.

You wouldn't care to give me a lift, would ya?

The whole idea behind Mirror's Edge is to give players a "feeling of motion" as they stride across rooftops and attempt to evade being caught by the government.

Assuming Mirror's Edge doesn't get hampered somewhere along the line with strict publisher deadlines or potential technical issues, it certainly appears as if the game could become more than your average Matrix/Assassin's Creed look-alike. We're keeping our eyes open for in-game footage, but from what was revealed thus far this one has a fair chance of actually pushing the boundaries of the genre further than most major modern-day FPSs have done.

The game is scheduled to arrive later this year for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms.

This game looks hyperreal. Very awesome lighting. I read that they used some kind of baked global illumination tech from Illuminate Labs, which Guerrilla is using as well in Killzone 2. The effect is everywhere in the trailer. You can see that vibrantly coloured surfaces reflect the light on their surroundings and on the main character's trousers. This truly amazes me. Shame about the jaggies though.

This is one of the few games in a while that i can describe as breath-taking when I see it in motion.

There's a preview on Meristation, and it confirms the PS3 version was demonstrated. It feels very promising.

Simple controls to do everything: triangle for upper actions like jumping, X for lower actions like sliding. Contextual actions, some shooting elements, close quarters combat, freedom on whether to keep using weapons or getting the hell out of wherever. Faith is an outlaw runner in an information controlled world, and the story involves rescuing a loved one. Linear game with alternate ways of playing, some more proper than others. First person coherence: you see all of Faith's limbs moving properly, she gets tired after a long escape, you feel like you're doing what she's doing, etc. Bullet time for precision actions. The game could be released this year as well.

Given the game's focus on vertical environments, Mirror's Edge's two main buttons are L1 and L2 on the Sixaxis, which are used as 'up' and 'down'Meristation mentioned triangle and X instead. I guess there's more than one controller layout.

Also (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11910472&postcount=221):

They had an extensive excellent exclusive preview in the German magazine "Maniac" this month. All the footage was from the PS3 version.

There is a linear story. The storytelling is done through a unique 2D animation style, we wanted there to be a real contrast between the storytelling and the videogame so that you really take notice of the story, because we feel that the story is a very important part of the game.

Sounds pretty cool. I like the idea of colour being used to illustrate paths in the environments, i can see that being used in the future, and the focus on the details. The enemies sound a bit contrived - it sounds like a bunch of bots on god-mode with high accuracy who *always* know where you are - it could end up contrived or great, depending on how its handled. Can't wait to see some reviews...

November 11th release
DICE ANNOUNCES SHIP DATE FOR MIRROR'S EDGE

Award-winning Action Adventure Game Redefines First Person Genre With New Heroine, New Perspective, New Freedom of Movement

Guildford, UK – Sept 18, 2008 – Take a leap of ‘Faith’ this November! DICE, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced that the highly acclaimed first-person action adventure title, Mirror’s Edge™ will ship on November 11th for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system. The PC version of Mirror’s Edge will ship later in the winter. Prior to launch, players worldwide will get an early peek at the game when the demo* becomes available via Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace and PLAYSTATION® Store. The demo will feature the prologue of the game including the tutorial and a segment of the single-player story mode. Starting September 26th, players who pre-order Mirror’s Edge at selected retailers will get an exclusive code that unlocks the Time Trial mode in the demo.

Time Trial mode challenges players to find the fastest route across the rooftops and through the streets. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror’s Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend’s ‘ghost’ run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards.

“Mirror’s Edge is bringing something new to the action-adventure genre this holiday by putting the player in the shoes of the hero, seeing what she sees, feeling what she feels,” says Owen O’Brien, Senior Producer, DICE. “We wanted to create an entirely new experience, with a different type of heroine and a world that not only looks fresh and new but has unique gameplay.”

I find it kind of surprising in the surrealness that videogames represent that no other games (or extremely few and probably unpopular games) at least these days use a similar colour scheme.

The closest thing was Portal and I'm sure when we play the games we'll find a lot of 'hidden' similarities in the concepts and designs of each game.

I just find it kind of odd how it took until Portal and this game to arrive at such a style. Maybe these two games just 'pop out' at you as such a style because they look so good.

(it does have really little on screen at a time of course but it still does nto take away how great the game looks).

This demo could be hit or miss, because based on the visuals and the goals of the developer I was already considering a day one purchase. If the demo is just average this will definately turn into a rental for me considering all of the AAA titles being released in early November. If the demo is incredible then I'm definately on board day one.

I think this title could be an example of a demo potentially doing more harm than good...

I think this title could be an example of a demo potentially doing more harm than good...

Having a demo is good in a way though, because imagine buying the game and then being disappointed with it. It would be a lot better for a lot of people if they found out they didn't like it before buying it. Which is basically the purpose of a demo.

You're either gonna like it or not, at the end of the day, it's all down to your personal preference.

10-30-2008, 03:59 AM
^You are absolutely correct from a consumer perspective...
I'm really happy I can confirm the title is right for me before I make a purchase. I just have the feeling some people who were excited primarily for the visuals and presentation may pass on the title if the gameplay is not their thing. I just hope for the developers sake the demo is really good; I would have to assume it is or they would not release the demo since the game has a decent amount of media buzz...

The demo is up on the Euro store.

Just played through it, thought it was pretty cool. Sucks that you have to have pre-ordered the game to be able to enter the time trial though.

I just played through the demo 4 times and I can say I'm hooked to the gameplay... I was not initially sure about the first person perspective for melee combat, but it works pretty well and seems to have some depth. I really like the acrobatic sequences and think other FPS titles can learn some level design tips from Dice.

The visuals are very impressive running on my 1080P display; the only visual that seemed a little off was the character shadowing. *Uncharted spoiled me on this visual…*I think the shadow issue could be a limitation of the UE3 engine, because I see this issue with many UE3 titles. This visual gripe is being very nitpicky, because the game looks amazing on my display and runs at a rock solid frame rate. Honestly this use of UE3 is a head scratcher when you see other UE3 titles not perform well on the PS3...

Based on the demo I will definitely consider a purchase if this game is longer than 15 hours on initial play through. Also, I noticed the hard setting had to be unlocked in the demo I hope it's available at the start of the final title. If I hear the gameplay is 10 hours I will more than likely rent this considering all the other games being released in the next few weeks. *This would be a day one purchase period if not so many games were being released in the same time frame…*

I highly recommend everyone download the demo, because this is a refreshing title in the FPS genre.

Yeah, I was going to buy it before the demo. It's a shame everyone and their uncle can make a good 3D racing platformer except Sonic Team.

Not too worried about length, if it's **** hot single player like Call of Duty 4 I'll be playing that over and over.

I agree considering the object is to keep moving through the level in at a fluid pace... It seem like we would get about 6 to 8 hours of gameplay, but perhaps the hard setting could stretch it a bit. Also, I did not mention the music in the game is very well done and suits the character & vibe of the title.

I wouldnt call it an FPS, the shooting sucks btw.

I also dont find the graphics that special, a lot aliasing and repeating (strange colored) textures, lighting is neat though.
Game is unique but i wont buy it.

Nameless
10-31-2008, 04:00 AM
^It's interesting to hear people's opinion on visuals, because I did not think the aliasing was that bad & the lighting seems a bit flat to me...

I think displays are making a big difference with this title, because on NeoGaf many gamers with SD displays were complaning about screen tearing & a lot of aliasing...

The game looks great on my 1080P Samsung and the game is running at 1080P on the PS3.
*I'm sure it's upscaled, but looks good...*

GTAce

I have a 1080p SAMSUNG 2493 24", the aliasing IS bad but maybe its a personal thing, i found it annoying because it ruined the whole "youre in the game" feeling for me.

Matt
10-31-2008, 04:13 AM
Mine is a Samsung 32" 1080p, and I noticed the same stuff you noticed. The texturing on Faith's face, for example, was a bit dodgy. But then, most UE3 games have had those problems.

I haven't finished the demo yet, but was pretty surprised with what I played. I thought the controls we're going to be too simple, making the game devoid of skill. The game does a good job by finding a comfortable inbetween where pulling off the games manouvres isn't too easy nor tediously difficult. It also pulls this off and keeps the action seamless.

Very beautiful. I'm quite surprised with EA this generation with their new properties. I hope they don't over do it with too many unnecessary sequels. I also hope they continue to develop new properties and leave those horrid movie adaptations alone.

Only visual problems I had were screen tearing on my SD rear projection. The lighting looked a bit flat, but I thought it was just the art direction....which made sense as it the city is meant to be kind of sterile...

First review is in.

Official Playstation Maagazine UK 90/100 (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/mirrorsedge)

You've never played anything like Mirror's Edge. It's a genuine original. When it's good - like when you're soaring between two rooftop cranes, pigeons scattering and traffic thrumming below, or dashing between roaming sniper laser sights, breaking into an enormous needle-shaped skyscraper - it's a total rush. And even when it's not quite so good, when you can't work out how to get through a particularly tricky section, the compulsion to keep trying remains strong

That being said, one thing I'm not a fan of are the illustrated cutscenes - it really looks like they were cutting corners with them.

^^I thought it was odd to make the attack button R2 when most shooters or games on the PS3 has R1 has the attack button. The L1 to jump & L2 to duck I can adjust too, but I play too many shooters to get use to the R2 for attack...

After playing the demo 10 times I can say I'm on board for a day one purchase period. I got to give the money to a title that has refreshing gameplay, presentation & great music.
*I could easily spend $500 bucks on games this holiday season & that's insane...*

JasonXe
11-01-2008, 12:39 AM
Jump in my head is top/up and duck is lower for bottom. I always have to have it in the back of my mind that I need to do things oppisitly which hinders the gameplay for me.

I use shoulder view because im right handed so it's easier to adapt. But in shoulder view, L2 is attack which is hard because i m use to r2 for firing/attacking. They need to add more control options or else I'll just rent it.
