CES 2008: 87% of owners watch Blu-ray movies on PS3

Sony Corp. this week said that 87 percent of Playstation 3 owners watch Blu-ray disc format movies on their PS3.

In the advertisement supplement Blu-ray Today distributed at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas, NV, Sony Computer Entertainment America senior VP of marketing said that 87 percent of PS3 owners watch Blu-ray movies on their PS3 and 84 percent intend to always purchase or rent Blu-ray movies.

The figures are based on an internal survey conducted by Sony.

The survey counters Blu-ray disc opponents who claim that PS3 owners are not purchasing Blu-ray format movies, making the ownership of the product a non-issue in the high-definition format war.

The latest Playstation model includes a Blu-ray disc drive to view high-definition video out of the box.

Nearly three million PS3 units have been sold in the U.S. to date.

Sony this week said the PS3 has outsold Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 HD DVD Player by nearly 10-to-1 in the U.S.

The Blu-ray Disc Association in Dec. said that 2.7 million players have been sold through to U.S. consumers. The HD DVD Promotions Group in Nov. said that 750,000 HD DVD players have been sold through to consumers.

Well, makes sense.

It's not like we are up to our heads with games to play.

Considering we all got a free Blu-ray film with our PS3's, I think it's safe to assume that that many people have watched one.

NEWSFLASH!!! PS3 gamers play PS3 games!! *shock* *horror*

I dont doubt watch but "buy" is a different scenario.

Though the use of the PS3 as a BR player does look to go up as it is the only reasonable final spec player available. I would even go as far as to say that BD spec depends upon what is capable through the PS3.

Didn't we just read multiple articles swearing that PS3 owners did not even buy Blu Ray movies at all? That most of us did not even use the PS3 to watch movies of any kind? I knew that was so much FUD.

The problem with those numbers is that OK 87% watched a BR on their PS3. But how much of them really took advantage of the BR : you need a 1080p TV to take full advantage of those discs.
But I have a 1080p TV and I can't watch any more DVDs even if they are upscalled.
At Xmas I bought Little chiken for my kids and the image is just WOW !! After that it's very hard to watch TV or DVDs.

They used your poll Cliffbo, didnt you get it? :p

Yeah, Jako, it's difficult to go back to DVD after wathing HD. That's why I've bought almost 30 Blu-Ray movies and only a couple on DVD after I bought a PS3. And I was sure I'd continue buying DVD's until I saw my first Blu-Ray. :D

Nice addition to blu ray discs announced in the news today also about blu ray discs having psp version of the film as an extra enabling us to transfer the movie from our blu ray copies to our psp via our ps3. NICE :)http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=178884

When Sony said PS3 to PSP connectivity they really werent kidding.
Nice to make copies of your fav films to psp for long trips. With the announcement of the new 16GB memory stick.http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=90232

Add the news from Kotaku that Paramount has a get out clause from its multi million dollar HD DVD exclusive deal and suddenly all those cry babies from last year complaining about blu ray not being needed or wanted can finally be outed as the short sighted little tits they are :)

You shouldn't be able to register with such a low age, so I assume this is related to a madhouse thread?

Lots of good LCD computer monitors have the connections (HDMI and Component) to take advantage of PS3's movie playback. Those that do also most likely do 1080p resolutions. That is what I am using now. A 22" Widescreen ASUS LCD. It is a little small but very beautiful. It has super contrast and a .02 ms refresh rate.

I soo cannot watch normal DVD or TV. It hurts me eyeballs!!! :( 1080p so good. 480i so bad. I love my PS3....:pinky:

the reason Sony will have posted that is to prove that PS3 owners actually DO KNOW that their console plays Blu-ray movies... it doesn't matter whether they watch them on SD
