I have had my PS3 for a few months now and I've played many games on my PS3 that were PS2 titles. I have a 60GB and here's what happened Today I tried to play Kingdom Hearts II on my PS3. when I put the game in the system reads it fine, but when I click the PS2 icon it starts to load. But it only shows me a black screen and never loads the game at all. But the funny thing is it reads PS3, PSX, DVDs, and Blu Rays just fine. It won't load PS2 titles for my life and I've tried multiple PS2 games. Do you guys think my PS3 is faulty when it comes to loading PS2 games? Has anybody had this problem? Is there a way to fix this besides calling sony or gamestop? Is this a normal occurrence for other PS3 users?

The good thing is I have a warranty through gamestop (and boy am I glad I got that warranty), but I called them and they said they don't have any 60GB systems in thier stores. They gave me some 1-800 number to call, but if somebody has a problem like this also then some wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I gotta get through Kingdom Hearts II and I have that nagging feeling within me that needs to finish it. I also have Uncharted and Lair coming in the mail from Gamefly, so the quicker I get the resolved the better.

So let me get this straight.....

You have previously played PS2 titles on your current 60GB PS3.
You tried to play Kingdom Hearts II but it would never get past the load screen.
Now your PS3 will not play ANY PS2 titles(even ones you previously played).

If thats the case; I'd call Sony. One thing to note: In the pat your PS3 played PS2 games via Hardware(EE+GS) - but with F/W upgrades you are using more Software Emulation(EE no longer used). Maybe try backing up your PS3 and blowing away the current F/W, try the PS2 games again - then update your F/W and try the games again. That should give you a pretty good idea of what exactly is the issue at hand.

Cheers and Good Luck.

[EDIT]
Sony's US Compatible Status Site (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus) Shows the Following:
Kingdom Hearts II
Publisher: Square EnixProduct No: SLUS-21005
Description: No major problems for this title.

Yesterday in the afternoon I was able to play Kingdom Hearts II on my PS3 and when I left my house around 3pm I left PS3 on, but it was on the main screen. I shut my TV off and left, but when I got back home to play some more Kingdom Hearts II around 3:30pm. this is when the problem started and Now I can't play any PS2 games on my PS3. Thanks Coded and I'll give what you said a try. If all else fails I'll call Sony or turn my PS3 into gamestop to use up my warranty.

Coded-Dude: As far as I know, US PS3's still emulate via hardware. No reason they should change it.

Bsack: Sounds like the PS2 chipset is fried. No choice but calling Sony.

I wasn't sure to the extent of the software emulation, but it is definitely something that is being used(a bit)
They added upscaling and expanded the B/C catalogue with F/W updates, so it could still be a culprit.

I'm doing some research now to see if I can find to what extent S/W emulation is being used in older models.

ok here's my problem now. I was able to swap out my PS3 at gamestop (after I tried everything you recommened Coded-Dude) for a 80GB model and Motorstorm. Well I get home I hook my system up with all the updates and etc. I pop my KH2 disc into the tray and it reads it fine. I come back to it later on and I try to play the game a little and the same damn thing happens. It won't load the disc, but it will read it and it's like that for EVERY one of my PS2 titles. It reads everything else just fine though. I don't have a clue what I'm doing wrong. Maybe something in the settings section is preventing it from loading properly like for example under the Game Settings portion? I dunno wtf is going on, but I'm definitely getting a little irritated....

I haven't had issues with PS2 BC, certainly none like that. As cowboylynnie says, that sounds like there's something wrong with the discs.

Have you talked with Sony support?

Your autosave/load maybe corrupt ? Just a thought.

Try deleting any saves on the PS3 HDD and then insert disc again. See if it plays game from beginning.

I'd say the disc is close to unreadable, resulting in incosistent reading performance.

Buy a new one, I think it has gone platinum by now.

Yeah, try what yoshaw said. You don't have to lose your saves if that isn't the problem, just transfer them to a new virtual card. Anyway, I still think it has to do with your discs.

The discs are in perfect condition and when I try them at my brothers house they work flawlessly.... I don't get wtf is going on with my PS3? I think it may be my TV HDMI cable. For example, when I put a PSX title in to load the screen goes to a black screen then a scrambled white screen, then adjusts the look to fit the screen and says 480p at the top left screen. That's what it used to do with my PS2 titles, but they won't even load anymore. =/ What's the number to sonys customer support line?

if yo ustill have your composite cables try using them, or switch cables between your PS3's and see if yours still fails and your brothers still works. Sounds like you have found one of those rare one in a million problems.

just on a whim... try to hook the ps3 up with standard def composite cables and see if that helps (of course, you will want to figure out the problem b/c nobody wants to switch cables just to play ps2 games, but it will help to diagnose the issue).

I just tried playing my NTSC copy of KH2 with my NTSC PS3(60 GB), and had no problems whatsoever playing it over HDMI, or when loading my savegame

this problem will eventualy make it so you can't play ps3 games too. its a fault in the fileing system for each game. its the ps3 equvilent if "file address not found".

the only way i know how to fix it is save your game data to a external sorce and reformat the HDD. although you could try just deleting and reinstalling your game data.

this problem only exist with the 60gig as far as i know.
(please dont neg rep me again im trying to help)

i had this problem with my 60gig and sony wanted me to return it. i sayed no i want to keep my first day machine as it has sentimental value. so i worked with the enginers on the phone till we found a fix. SONY IS TEH ROXORS!

I had this problem before. Try turning off the system like you usually do (hibernation). Next hold the down on the power switch in front for about five seconds or until it beeps twice or maybe switch it off with the master swicth in back. I believe this should fix the problem. If this doesn't work, then something is wrong with your console.

I returned my 60GB system to gamestop and came back out with a brand new 80GB, a copy of Motorstorm, and a renewed one year warranty all for free. I come home and plug my system in (last night) and I put in Kingdom Hearts II in and it loads up fine. I try it again and I have the same problem with it as I did with my 60GB. I said fuck it and I'm tired of this shit. I just keep it there and I go to work (graveyard shift) and I came back home this afternoon. I gave the PS2 disc another go and it loaded up. I haven't shut my system off since then because I'm enjoying my progression through KH2 at the moment, but I'll bet my paycheck if I went back to the main screen and tried to reload my PS2 disc it won't do it to save my life. This is the wierdest thing I've ever come across on a PS3 system.

I'll be giving the above suggestions a try a little later, but for now I'm gonna enjoy my time with KH2. Thanks to all of you that are attempting to help me out. +rep all around. =)
