Darth Vader, Yoda Join The Cast of Soulcalibur IV

If you thought guess appearances from characters like Spawn, Link from The Legend of Zelda or Heihachi from Tekken were odd, you may want to brace yourself for the inclusion of Darth Vader and Yoda in Soulcalibur IV. 1UP brings exclusive word today, along with almost a dozen screens of the two jedi fighting well known souls, that at least two members of the Star Wars cast will make their way into Namco Bandai's upcoming fighter. Yes, we're stunned and confused, too.

The site drops hints that there's a possibility even more characters from the Star Wars universe could appear—there are no shortage of Jedi and Sith out there—but doesn't provide much beyond a fantasy roster. Hey, it can't be worse than Masters of Teras Kasai and it's definitely better than some godawful Todd McFarlane custom creation.

We're heading over to Namco Bandai's Soulcalibur IV CES event in just a bit, so expect impressions and more news to come as soon as possible.

So this should be a sign to the Lucas people that videogamers want more Star Wars. I like the idea of fighting with Yoda and Darth Vader against the Soul Caliber scrubs, but I REALLY like the idea of fighting the rest of the Star Wars universe. I don't have much interest in fighting games these days, but the Star Wars' characters are iconic. I'd play a Star Wars RTS, another Star Wars RPG (never actually played KOTOR since I didn't own an XBox), etc...

Edit: I wish they'd go with the original Darth and not the Revenge of the Sith model. The body and head look disproportionate.

Seems like that could get out of proportion really fast. Part of the problem with Spawn in SC2 is that his abilities made him so out-of-place in the Soul Calibur universe (compared to, for instance, Link who was very well-suited to it). I mean, if you had the ability to perform grappling at a distance in Soul Calibur, that pretty much defeats the purpose. For that, you might as well have people with DBZ-style powers.

This has happened before... Link in SC2 GC, Spawn in SC2 X-box and Heihachi in SC2 PS2. This isn't any different than that. Except Heihachi could be an exception since Tekken and SC are both Namco made games...

Cameos are nothing new to Namco Bandai's long-running Soul Calibur fighting series. When Soul Calibur II released for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox in 2003, each version received an exclusive, and seemingly oddball addition to the game's fighter roster. Nintendo's iconic sword-fighter Link wound up in the GC version, while Todd McFarlane's Spawn materialized in the Xbox game and Tekken's karate master Heihachi Mishima appeared in the PS2 game.

Yoda takes a swipe at Cassandra.

With Soul Calibur III seeing a console-exclusive release on the PS2, Namco Bandai forwent the cameo route, instead throwing all three out-of-place fighters into the same ring. However, with Soulcalibur IV slated to arrive this summer on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Japanese publisher felt a new round of iconic fighters was in order.

Namco Bandai today announced from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it would be partnering with LucasArts to add Darth Vader to the PlayStation 3 version's roster, with Yoda joining up with the Xbox 360 crew. Screenshots released with the announcement reveal the two will both wield their respective red and green lightsabers, though no other details on how the two characters will play were given.

Voldo seems to be no match for Vader.

Soulcalibur IV continues the story begun in the first three fighter installments in the Soul Calibur/ Soul Blade series, with Project Soul returning to development duties on the game. In addition to new battle system, Soulcalibur IV will let fighters create their own custom characters with distinct looks and moves and will also feature online play.

Vader's in a black costume. The PS3's black by default.

Update: Bad news. Apparently, Darth Vader will be exclusive to the PS3 version, and Yoda will be exclusive to the 360 version. So the Jedi and the Sith won’t actually be clashing swords – not with each other, at any rate.

FF characters who carried a sword I can sort of see, but the whole limit break thing would be a little weird in SC land. Now Auron was a bad-ass, and he could be molded to fit the SC world without a lot of change from his FFX persona. People with ranged attacks like Wakka would just not fit in. Sephiroth could get a little weird. He'd have 20 life bars and every time you knocked him out of the ring or something, he'd just come right back again.

Anime characters-wise, you'd probably have a wealth of jidaigeki characters to pick from who'd fit in nicely (e.g. Kenshin), but then we already have a clone of a jidaigeki actor (Mifune Toshiro) in Mitsurugi, so it would only be redundant.

I can only imagine the kind of travesty that might occur if you added Majin Buu or Sailor Moon or something.

There was an anime I was particularly fond of, I believe it released some time in the 90s. It featured kind of a dungeons and dragons setting and plot line and was extremely well done (imo). Though for the life of me I cant remember the name. But anyways the characters from this series would fit well into the SC game.

Well, at least SSB makes no pretenses about trying to be logical or cohesive. Soul Calibur actually brings in all these characters and tries to create some sort of storyline behind their appearances in that space. Spawn, for instance, is tied to the supernatural, so every off appearance he has in any old universe can just be explained by his supernatural missions. Kratos is a god who like power, so he can just look around in universe after universe and see "ooh! nifty weapon! Kratos likey."

Star Wars characters seem to have the technology to hop from star system to star system as if it was some sort of morning commute, and the whole thing did happen a long time ago, and you can just say that Yoda/Vader both found about Soul Edge because it creates a "great disturbance in the force." So there you go.

Now, Cloud...? Well, I don't know, a warping of the lifestream around the sword has reacted with some randomly found materia that was accidentally hurled out into space and landed in Soul Calibur world and that transported Cloud there because there was some trace of his... whatever.

Now how would one explain Sailor Moon...? ;)

Well think on this;

Kenobi beat Vader.
Kenobi wasn't powerfull enough to go after palpatine and Yoda went instead.
Therefore Yoda is better than Kenobi.
Also, Vader with his mechanical get-up is less powerfull than Vader before his battle with Kenobi. Due to the extent of the damage he can never become a true sith master.

And remember that Palpatine kicked Yoda's ass and Vader killed Palpatine.

Edit: The ability of a Jedi/Sith doesn't really matter when they're as conflicted as Anakin was he's bound to get carved up by someone like Vader. Sith Masters could do alot more than Vader can ever do and i am sure the same can be said for Yoda. You can't base arguements from just the films, there is alot more material out there.

Dude that's a load of crap. They were forced into a stalemate when the terrain got out of hand. And Vader just grabbed Palpatine when his back was turned and threw him (though that's besides the point I don't doubt Vader would have beaten him in a face to face force/saber fight). Not gonna happen anytime soon, and I don't really think they should. Vader and Yoda are out there enough, adding more console exclusive characters would be stupid. And Dante could be in both games, but I don't think he would be good seeing as there are hardly any long range moves in SC, and when there are, they have insane start up time. Having two handguns would instantly make him broken, and his play style is too out there for SC seeing as he plays with air combos and toning him down would basically rip Dante's core.

Dante for a Darkstalkers game would be more plausable if they were making another one. Hopefully with the fighting game kick Capcom Japan is on, we could see another Darkstalkers game with Dante in it.

SNK outdid themselves with cheap bosses in that game. But yeah, I agree. Fighting game bosses should be made harder because it is that much better when you beat it, but there is a limit. When I can only beat the game with 2 characters (the original GG) then there is something wrong.
