View Full Version : Good chill out lounge music?
better

I'm having some friends over for a drink next week.
We're in our late teen and early 20s, and it's just for a quiet night of drinks at my house.
What are some good chill out lounge music I can play in the background. Softly so that we can still have good conversations.

Well what genre do you and your friends typically enjoy.??
I suppose I would suggest some of Pink Floyds slower stuff.

If you want new music you could try the new Plant album, but that may be a bit old man for some people.

Trance.
Tiesto, Van Buuren, Van Dyk, Shadow, Oakenfold(only if you like it mainstream with pop songs and crap)...
Definitely what Chaney said, Floyd.

If you want actual 'Lounge music', I can't help.
What I can do is recommend some excellent albums that work well in the background.
Almost anything by Odd Nosdam, but especially his album 'Burner'.
Textural soundscape with nice beats.
Also check out cLOUDDEAD's first album.
Eyvind Kang's 'Virginal Co-Ordinates' is a purely beautiful album!
The last two songs make up a spectacular album ending.
Boards Of Canada.
Nearly anything by them is appropriate.
I suggest their album 'Music Has The Right To Children'.
Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works'.
I think Volume 2 is better, certainly as ambient music.
The album 'Koolmotor' by Five Deez is perfect laidback Hip-Hop for chilling out.
DJ Shadow was already mentioned, but I would add that while I personally find his music too interesting to let it sink into the background, there are certain songs that are appropriate.
'Influx', the four 'What Does Your Soul Look Like?' parts and 'Hindsight', so actually his 'Pre-Emptive Strike' album, bar the last two tracks, as good as they are.
Changeling
Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain
Fixed Income
Giving Up The Ghost
Six Days
Hardcore Hip-Hip (Instrumental)
'Sleeping On Saturday And Sunday Afternoons' is a nice relaxing tour only album by Prefuse 73.
Four Tet's 'Pause' album is beautiful.
Some John Zorn would be appropriate, although I am familiar with but a small fraction of his music.
His soundtrack to 'Protocols Of Zion' is enjoyable and interesting.
Oren Ambarchi's 'Grapes From The Estate' is perfect nighttime music, as I have already talked about in the 'Favorite Electronic Album? (http://www.e-mpire.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82425)' thread.
In the same vein, Aeroc's 'Viscous Solid' album
Steve Reich's 'Music For 18 Musicians' is an excellent album to not pay attention to, of course it's much better if you do.
Try some Tricky, like the songs 'Pumpkin' and 'Smoking Beagles'.
I never really got the Velvet Underground song 'Venus In Furs' until I watched Gus Van Sant's film 'Last Days'.
Some Ween songs are peaceful.
'Joppa Road', 'Zoloft', 'Springtheme' and the surreal 'Alcan Road'.
Beck's 'Sea Change' album is perfect.
...I really hope you didn't mean actual Lounge music.

Sublime self titled and Weezer's Blue album are the ultimate summer chill soundtrack. Maybe some 311 thrown in there too.

David Gilmour - from Pink Floyd. More ambience than Floyd.
Architecture in Helsinki - A sorta wonky band with somber tunes, although some are very different with the beats.
The Moldy Peaches - very mellow. The music sounds like a group of friends just sitting around making music.
Artic Monkeys - Not as loungy, but some is.
Band of Horses - Serene auro behind their music. Not the best choice though.
Brand New - Older stuff is mellow. Newer stuff has some mellow tunes as well.
The Dissociatives - Lead singer of Silverchair runs this. Very ambient at times. Very different at other times. Trancy sometimes.
Jack Johnson - acoustic goodness.
Kenna - mixes through and through.
Kimya Dawson - lead female singer of The Moldy Peaches.
Klaxons - Not as much lounge music, but some is.
Mark Ronson - More dance music than lounge music. Still fun to listen to.
Modest Mouse - Just too fun to listen to.
Pepper - very reminicsent of Sublime.
The Postal Service - We all know already.
Radiohead - New cd is very ambient and loungey.
The Receiving End of Sirens - I don't fully remember them, but I think they are slower for the most part.
Rilo Kiley - fun to listen to.
Regina Spektor - Interesting style and lyrics. More acoustically inclined.
The Shins - New cd is awesome.
Sneaker Pimps - Trancy at times. Ambient at times.
