View Full Version : Japanese Brawl character number leak? Maybe?

Attached to this post is an image I found.

I found the pic on a blog at IGN blogs by just a normal user (who claimed to have seen it elsewhere on the internet, but didn't say where). So I have no idea what the source is.

He says that it is from a newspaper in Japan (no idea which) that accidentally leaked that there are 48 characters in Brawl. However, he doesn't speak Japanese (nor do I) so he can't be sure.

I have no idea if this is fake or not. I can make out the number 25 (number of characters in Smash Bros Melee) right before the 48...

Anyone who speaks Japanese want to give it a shot and tell us what is on it?

There's really no way to know if it's real or a faked shot though. Maybe there's an indication of the magazine name on there somewhere.

it's a little blurry, and i don't remember my japanese well enough to be able to translate any significant parts of it. the 48 is followed by the kanji for "famous" so it could very well be saying something about "48 famous characters." i'll see what else i can figure out.

edit: after further examination, the sentence with the number 25 in it on the second line is (as best as i can estimate): "Smash Bros. DX's character list had 25 people." DX was Melee in Japan, correct? And if you count zelda and sheik together, that's 25. so i'm fairly certain that's the correct translation.

edit2: the following sentence is "This time, [something illegible] 48 characters and 2 [something else i can't read]."

edit3: just to clarify, i wrote "48 characters" but that assumes i'm correct in my translation of the first sentence. i could be wrong about the word after 48. but i'm actually fairly sure i'm right.

Thanks, Zeep. My gut's leaning for fake on this one for some reason. The lighting looks too consistent on the paper, like Photoshop, but I digress...

Were I to fake an image, I'd write it, print it, and photograph it, not photoshop, so that would seem like a rookie mistake.

A random Japanese paragraph holds little more weight than a blogger post, but the real question is if this was actually published somewhere. Otherwise, maybe we can just look for contradictions in the text?

it also seems odd that a newspaper would have that much whitespace above and below the article text.

Tracked down the source, as far as I can tell. It originated on GameFAQs.

From the thread:
The Japanese newspaper, Oita Godo-Shinbun, printed a review of Brawl in yesterday's issue and accidentally(?) spilled the beans on the roster size. It's 48 (see the first paragraph).

No one has confirmed it yet.

The Japanese magazines I usually see (like Famitsu, for example) tend to always put ads and pictures in or around the text, as close as possible, so this seems unusual to me, but then again I've never looked an actual Japanese newspaper verses a magazine.

It could be some Japanese dude trying to make a fake article. If I were to make a fake article I'd type it out on computer and print it out. That what this looks like; a printed out piece of paper instead of a newpaper or magazine.

But thats what Japanese things might look like.

That's the last few paragraphs of the Japanese wikipedia article. That's also the last few paragraphs of this leaked article...

I'm calling "fake".

Nothing to see here :( Sorry!

48 characters actually doesn't seem unrealistic to me. Melee doubled the amount of characters in the original. They've already announced 25 characters on the Dojo, and they haven't even mentioned Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, Mewtwo, Ganondorf, Luigi, Game & Watch...etc

I actually DO want to discover them as I play. I don't want the hidden characters spoiled- but knowing that there is a large number of them would make me very excited :D

I think ill be repeating myself from somewhere, but whatever...
Its hard to know how to unlock characters in smash. You kind of just play and go through it hoping that maybe youll encounter a new character by doing some random task. Luigi in Melee is a good example. You have to beat the first level of Adventure Mode with the number 2 in the second 'seconds' digit. I must have played through Adventure mode like 50 times without doing that. I had to read about it. So we might as well find out what they are before we play and then while playing through find a list that says somethign to the effect of "To unlock ________, beat _________" or "To unlock _______, play ________mode for ___ hours"

yea... I think we should enact a strict policy for new characters especially and perhaps other spoilers from the Japanese release out until the US release has arrived or the dojo announces it....

seeing the words "challenger approaching" randomly after a heated single player match was such a memorable experience back in days of Melee.

32 is my guess, 35 would be even better but I think the final rooster will be that.
