Pope Says War Threatens Fate of Humanity

VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul II on Saturday denounced the war against Iraq as threatening the "fate of humanity" in his first public comments on the U.S-led attacks.

"When war, as in these days in Iraq, threatens the fate of humanity, it is ever more urgent to proclaim, with a strong and decisive voice, that only peace is the road to follow to construct a more just and united society," John Paul said. "Violence and arms can never resolve the problems of men."

The pontiff said that peace is "a gift of God and a humble and constant achievement by men."

John Paul, with impassioned speeches and Vatican diplomacy, lobbied against war and in favor of a negotiated solution in the months before the conflict.

He made his remarks Saturday in an address at the Vatican to members of an Italian religious television channel, Telepace.

A few hours after the war began, the Vatican expressed "deep pain" and faulted both sides for failing to find a peaceful solution, but until Saturday, the pope himself had not spoken publicly about the attacks.

John Paul has said there is no legal or moral justification for military action. He has also expressed concern that war would harm relations between Christians and Muslims.

Before thre war, the pope sent a cardinal to Washington to plead with President Bush (news - web sites) not to attack, and another cardinal to Baghdad to press Saddam Hussein to cooperate completely with U.N. weapons inspectors.

If it weren't for American violence all of Europe would be under Nazi control, the Philipines would still be controlled by Spain, and we would still be an English colony.

The pope is a man that knows what he believes. He has his own opinion the pope does not dictate christian beliefs, he just reflects on how the Vatican feels. But there are many debates if the Pope should be in political issues.

OMG Most of the priests don't do that my god dont you guys dare start on this topic. Sure a few priests did a whole lot of crap but its not the popes fault what they did! Emily, calm down!! It was me who said that because I think it deserves to be said.. He knew it was going on, because when someone files a complaint, it goes to the Vatican..Now, some bishops knew it, and only sent them to a new parish..The pope knew it was happening, and did nothing to stop it...

the pope is too old to make disscions without being deeply effected by his advisors which are prodomanetly anti-war, he was for the war in Kosovo, while this crisis is a much greater threat to hummanity if nothing is done.

Violence solves everything kid. Hypothetically, if you and I knew eachother personally, and I beat your ass and put you in the hospital, you would fear me, therefore you would never talk to me again, and that would solve something, now wouldn't it?

Maybe I should of been more specific ... the loss of innocent civillians and damaging of the earth. It's kind of disturbing to see bombs all over Baghdad ... sometimes you got to put yourself in the position of those in a country being bombed.

You should really check out those MTV Diaries with teenagers from Iraq and Israel.

you are so naive, We are not bombing civilians.

And fyi bombing innocent civilians is just a way to say, costs of war, only making it sound more sad. The world reacts to death in both a posotive and negative way. in ww2 we used the nuke on two city's saving millions of soldiers. But killed thousends of civilians. in 9/11 we lost thousends of innocents, but found our flaw in not acting on terrorism and began to stop them before they made another terror attack.
