After the much-publicized departure of editorial director Jeff Gerstmann, GameSpot's parent company, CNet, has named its new editor-in-chief: Ricardo Torres, who has been with the site since 2001. "I'm eager to continue the site's tradition of excellence" Torres said in response to the promotion, "and I'm confident we can move forward into 2008 and set a new industry standard for how video games are covered."

As editor-in-chief, CNet says that Torres "will oversee GameSpot's award-winning editorial staff in their coverage of the latest games and breaking news." What it doesn't mention is that he will also take on the responsibility of repairing GameSpot's shattered image. GameSpot's editorial section has been in a state of disarray since the Gerstmann incident, in which rumors suggest that the former editorial director was fired due to advertiser pressure. After his departure, several staff members (including Alex Navarro and Frank Provo) left the publication in protest.

Better just call him Monkey-Choad-Sucker-in-Chief. He will continue to be the sucker for the advertisers as that is how Gamespot makes it real income flow. Reviews, bought and sold for advertising dollars, the Gamespot way. Hell, pretty much every major game publication is included in this too though. Game review sites/mags are better served and serve us better when they are small and independent.

And if any believes that Gerstmann was not fired for the Kane and Lynch incident I have an island to sell you Arizona.

"I'm eager to continue the site's tradition of excellence"
BWAhaaaahhhaaaaaaaaaaaa!HHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!

Omfg.

They might as well put under the Gamespot logo
"We piss excellence."

What the fuck, you don't act that blunt about how awesome you are, if in fact you were excellent, you wouldn't need to say it.

Oh man that made me spit out my drink
(If I was drinking.)

I laughed and stopped at the exact same line hahahaha!!! I would've quoted it but you got here before I did :P

I could've spit out my orange juice too. But I wasn't drinking it at that particular moment. My precious orange juice is safe... :)

But at least to be nice to Ricardo... it does in a way seem like the only thing he could really say lol.

Sounds like the default kind of response to being promoted to such a position no?

I mean if I was in some middle class curry restaurant chain to say something to the media and being promoted to head chef of operations (we are assuming the public wants to know what is happening with the curry restaurant, believe it!) I'd probably be like 'to continue our tradition of excellent South Asian foods with our super secret recipes at low, low prices!' or something.

Haha, oh man, if I wasn't me and knew for a fact that you aren't me, I would suspect a double account lol

Or that we were a gay couple ¬_¬

EDIT: Yeah I guess.
Though I'll try to be a bit less ridiculous.
Maybe I'll say "i'm glad to be in this position and hope to sustain and improve Gamespot's bright future" or some crap like that...........Oh wow okay it IS tough.
I was a bit unfair but let's remember laughing at rich people is never a bad thing.

Maybe you, meaning me....

Meaning the both of us...

Are actually a gay couple?

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh....

That's a sick avatar btw, but it doesn't even come close to my new one I'm about to put up :D

GameSpot's New EIC On Gerstmann, Moving On

gamespotblacklogo.jpgYou couldn't pay me enough to take Ricardo Torres' job. The newly promoted Editor-in-Chief of GameSpot took up the reins of the site in the wake of Gerstmann-gate, with community trust at an all time low and the eyes of the internet watching their every move. GameDaily's Kyle Orland discusses the trials and tribulations of stepping into this new position with Torres in his weekly Media Coverage segment, touching on the future of GameSpot, competing with upstart gaming blogs (*whistles innocently*), sketchy advertising policies and of course, Jeff Gerstmann.

"GameSpot's gone through quite a few bumps in the road over the years. I know Jeff's fans are upset and I know people are upset over the perception and how it all played out. Really, the best thing that we can do is to just show them that we're good at what we do. Ultimately content is going to prove to people that we're untainted, uncorrupt and committed to serving our readers."

I cannot imagine the pressure the poor guy must be under, what with company morale definitely at a low point and the awesome amount of scrutiny everything GameSpot does is currently under. On top of all of that, Torres still has to find time to write...which is arguably the first passion of any member of the gaming press. If you took away video games from me, I would still write about anything I could get my hands on - movies, my cats, milk...whatever. Take away writing and I'd just about go insane, possibly driving to Colorado to set up camp outside a certain bird-shirt wearing fellow's house. Just saying.

I'm going to try to balance it out. I'm going to try and still do some writing. I'm in this business because I like games, and I'd be really sad if I wound up taking a position where I couldn't play them. The chef wants to sit down every once in a while and try recent cooking, so this is my hope.

I truly wish him the best of luck with that. Hit up the link below for the full interview, which offers up some interesting insight into what it means to be in charge of a massive gaming site like GameSpot.

I almost feel sorry for the guy too, but not really. He is willingly shoveling their lies and bullshit. Listen to him try to play it all off like everything is a-okay and we can trust them again. Yah, right. They suck, their tainted video games reviews are garbage and they waste people's cash. They are increasingly anti-PS3 as well. I have seen too many anti-PS3 comments and polls on Gamespot for me to give a rat's as about them. Fuck Gamespot with a brick. CNET has forced them to be whores for advertising dollars, that is it, pure and simple.

In all honesty, what they are telling you is pretty much the truth guys. Gamespot was pretty much powerless themselves, it was CNET's fault it got out of hand.

He wasn't fired over advertising pressure, the truth is, he was an asshole, and his boss was an asshole also. They didn't really seem to like eachother, and Gertsmann would intentionally do stuff in his editorials to piss the guy off.

You all act like this is how all of Gamespot's staff is. Gamespot as a whole is an incredibly reliable gaming site, WAY more reliable than the other corporate owned sites out there.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you to a degree. They pretty much all suck in various ways...game informer ain't bad though.

Are you serious? Do you know whom pays Game Informer's bills? The largest game store in North America. When you buy a Game Informer, do you ever notice how crappy games Gamestop is trying to push, GI is pushing also?

Also HD DVD isn't dead, mine still works. :)

You keep telling yourself that. Then Beta Max is not dead either. Or Laser Disk. Or 8 tracks....

Your elitism confuses me?
