The pictures will come in two sets. The first being the original and the second the HDR image.

I'll start with some downtown shots and then show some beach shots.

I'm so jealous that's what surrounds you Viper. I'll be sure to think about (beating your ass) you when I'm bundling up in the 5 degree weather here!

But on topic, nice shots. I need to start using my camera more...

You can alter the setting I assume for this HDR?

It made that cage shot look pretty ace but other than that just killed the variety of colours in others, replacing it with a big blob of blue/ orange/ whatever overload but that's a style too and I think it works in a way if you like it that way.

So yeah man pretty good.
Lovely setting.

Yeah some look really nice. While the first one looks like it just altered the color balance and a few just look like it brightened them.

I'm pretty sure that's all that's been done and that they're not really HDR at all, but that's not to say that it doesn't improve the apparent visibility and also creates some interesting images, (certainly, the first one is eye-catching in it's glowing glory,) but the adjusted images often some seem somewhat blurry (the digital compression of the originals having being pushed to the limit,) and the over-saturation of color doesn't appeal to me that much.

With that said, I like the original photos of the bridge, the second walkway and the fifth-and-second-last shots too. That one of the building has an interesting angle, which I enjoy.

I can change the settings but that bridge really is that blue.

High Dynamic Range. These are the culmination of 5 bracketed shots taken at different exposure levels then merged into one shot. A single exposure could never capture the shadows, highlights and details that an HDR image can display.

Yes there have been some saturation, white balance, color, luminosity, contrast, etc...tweaking but the base image itself brings out the details in a shadow or the colors without washout that a single exposure cannot show.

Here is a demonstration. I'll post the 5 shots (the middle picture will be of standard exposure) and then post the merged HDR shot.

Notice how in the first shots the normally shadowy area is now visible but the buildings in the background are totally washed out. In the last few the background buildings become clear but the foreground is far too dark.

Let's merge them and add the color back in lost from over and underexposures.

Lol, thanks.

Yes, this is Florida. Jacksonville to be specific. Pardon the screen stretch but here is a pano I took a while back. I didn't have my tripod and this was 5 miles away so it came out a tad blurry.

I was mistaken in thinking these images weren't actual HDR images.
But I do understand what HDR is and how it works.

(This is where, in my moderate embarrassment, I over-explain my actions. Feel free to ignore.)

What threw me is that, the originals you posted (with the standard exposure) seemed to contain enough information in the shadows and highlights to be able to create the resulting image though a manipulation of color curves. (Not only that, but if you were shooting in RAW, you might even be circumventing the loss of shadow and highlight detail inherent in format conversion, thus maintaining plenty of luma information to work with.) I also suspected that the color had a simple increase in saturation to make up for the camera's subdued capture of color. So I did some tests using some of the originals you posted, and tried to manipulate them in Photoshop to match the second image. I found I could replicate the light levels up to a little less than a match, but that the over-saturation of color resulted in too much Jpeg noise to determine an accurate match, and put it down to RAW having far more flexibility.

So... yeah...

Awesome shots. That's one very blue bridge!!

Just out of interest, what camera do you have?

No problem, Boggy. I plan to shoot in RAW a lot more often soon as well.

Matt I was using an Olympus SP-500 UZ. I'll be upgrading to a high end DSLR very soon and will blow these shots away.

Nice work, although a bit overdone on some.

Yeah, a DSLR will really clean up some of the images with less noise and artifacts. You can't beat the cleaness of a DSLR image with a good CMOS sensor and a good lens.

The hdr just makes the picture lose far too much black.. it throws the balance off
