The North American release of the Devil May Cry anime series may have been canceled by publisher ADV Films, according to a recent report from ICv2. The report, which indicates a broad number of domestic cancellations on ADV's part, including the Devil May Cry series, has since been pulled from the site, but is still available via Google Cache. Despite being announced in December for a February 5 release, absolutely no references to Devil May Cry currently exist on ADV Films' web site. These references, however, are also still available as cached pages.
We contacted both Capcom and ADV Films to learn more.
Capcom reps told us that while they can't speak for ADV Films' release schedule, a cancellation of the DVD release of the series would not affect the Devil May Cry 4 Collector's Edition. It comes with the first disc of the DVD release, containing 4 episodes of the cartoon, which may now be the only option for those looking for an English language release.
We have yet to hear back from ADV reps. Word from ADV to retailers listed some 37 titles as "on indefinite hiatus, effective immediately" but the title is still listed as shipping on February 5 at retailers like Amazon and CD Universe.
We'll update if we hear more details.
Thanks to... um, Bonertown for the heads up.

Thanks man, I trust your taste in media. I guess they should have hired the peeps who made Ghost In the Shell:SAD or ninja Scroll to make the DMC anime.

I mean if there's any game to anime adaptation that makes sense right off the top of my head, it'd be the DMC franchise. But no, they really dropped the ball.

I watched it all, sadly. At least it wasn't a *total* waste of time for me since I would be building code and datasets in the background and couldn't really do anything productive anyway during those hours, and it was a short series anyway...
For one, Dante playing the strong silent type is one thing, but the ever soft-hearted bit and the loli sidekick thing was just so completely weird. Also, where the hell did this affixation on strawberry sundaes come from? A bunch of wasted episodes that served no purpose (i.e. moments where I was going "Yes, okay, I get it. Dante is a bad-ass. No need to spend 3 episodes on it.") Then of course, there was the sheer difference in power here. All of a sudden, his guns have more than 30x the power of all his weapons in all 3 games combined, and his swords weren't that much greater. Then of course, there's the whole thing of that business manager, Lady, Trish, and the loli sidekick all having Dante wrapped around their fingers... They manipulate him like he's some sock puppet, turning him into a mass collection of anime stereotypes.
It seems that overall that the only good game->anime adaptations were all originally adult games.

i honestly had high hopes for it when it was announced
The ties between anime and video games have always been strong. Case in point is Capcom's Devil May Cry series and its successful animated series following. However, ADV, the publisher of the animated series, has recently announced that it will be pulling out any future plans to continue the release of the title, as well as 36 other animated series.
The company has been in a recent bind with some of its Japanese investors, which explains the reason behind its pull out. These include licenses bought through companies like the ARM Corporation, Sojitz Corporation, the Development Band of Japan and KlockWorx.
A letter sent from ADV to its retailers explains the suspension of its numerous titles:
ADV has suspended certain elements of its former alliance with ARM Corporation, which financed the acquisition of these titles. ADV is working closely with various constituencies with the goal of restoring most if not all of these properties to our release schedule at a later date to the extent possible.
Two weeks ago, ADV had announced that it will be pulling out its support from its industry leading collection of anime clubs, as well as its publication of Newtype USA.
However, the company still has assets tied into its previously released anime titles, as well as its extensive manga publishing program. Hopefully, this may still spell good news for fans of Devil May Cry: The Animated Series who want to complete the entire set sometime in the future.

Man it sounds they REALLY hosed Dante's character and made him a moron. What a total waste of effort. I really wish that the people who made Ninja Scroll made Devil May Cry. it really would have kicked ass then. :realmad: That pisses me off. But oh well....
