While talking to Blog Talk Radio, screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) briefly talked about the experience of writing Spider-Man 4. He's in charge of setting the overall story for Sony's Columbia Pictures while Sam Raimi, Laura-Schuler Donner, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin are set to produce the film. No word yet on whether any of the principal stars will be returning.

"I went in on that. I really loved the films," Vanderbilt said. "It's sort of an odd process because you're sitting down with the people who made the first three and going, 'Well let me tell you what to do.'

"But I was lucky enough that they were interested in me and I'm a huge fan of those movies, so we closed that up right before the strike. Once the strike's over I get to go to work," he added.

Two wishes about Spider-Man 4. Recast Mary Jane with Megan Fox. She is WAY hotter than Dunst by a mile. And have less damned villains. I thought there were to many villains. I wanted way more Venom. Other wise just keep on making it like it was made.

Also a mental break down of Parker should be included again where the movie turns into a 90s cheesy drama for 20 minutes while he dances around and smacks woman.

Seriously though, yes, the biggest criticism of SM3 was that there were too many villains, it wasn't as in depth as SM1 and 2 but except for the final anti-climatic fight, they still did a good job with them I think, although CGI looked a bit weird at times.

I just through about it and in SP4 I think it would be a good change of events of Spider-Man did not save Mary Jane at all during the entire movie. Have her in it for continuities ake, but do not have been the typical "damsel in distress".

And yah masteratt, that emotional break down where Peter goes all "emo" was pretty lame. Let's hope this new writer is a little more serious in his subject matter then the last ones were.

From what I read before 3 came out, it was supposed to focus on Peter's struggles and Eddie Brock wasn't supposed to be "villainous," merely a character build up to create an epic Spidy vs. Venom battle virtually all the way through Spider-Man 4. There wouldn't need to be any character build up as it was established in the previous one.

Did they confirm the villains for SM4 yet?
Is it just Venom?

no, this was pre-spidy 3 propoganda........

Ah okay.
It does make sense though.

I just asked because what you said would be great if for SM4 we only have Venom since that build up in SM3, plus the whole SM4 dedicated to him would make a pretty epic battle between the two characters.

Its what I'm hoping for, and it kind of makes 3 make a little more sense(why there were so many villains).....Spidy needed somebody to fight as the movie would have been worse seeing as how we didn't even get to see Venom until over half-way into the movie. I'm just glad Raimi is still producing. I liked one and two, and didn't expect a whole lot from three, as they were allegedly going to make 4 "epic."

Pro A.

If I had made Spider-Man 3, I would have whittled Brock's character down, jettisoned everything related to Gwen Stacy, and I would have given Eddie a more intimidating demeanor. Not evil, but maybe give him a nastier edge. I also would have thrown out that ridiculous subplot with the amnesia. I did like, however, the idea that Sandman being responsible for what happened in the first movie, and I would have expanded on that more. Maybe have Harry find out about this somehow and with the help of the elder Goblin (more scenes for the creepy Willem Dafoe) try to drive a wedge between Peter and MJ. A more psychological approach, I think, would have worked a lot better and maybe then you end with an ambiguous note with something like Peter about to kill Harry or Sandman in that symbiote suit and then he realizes what he's doing and he gets rid of it, thus giving it to Venom. Much better movie, I think.

Oh yeah, two more things: Less crying and no singing from Kirsten Dunst.

Willem Dafoe's goblin was the only villain from the three films that I thought was interesting, even if the costume was lame.

They should bring him back from the dead and have him kill Spider-Man and Mary Jane.

Spider-man 4!? Ok I think I had enough. It was all good up until 3. I mean, Venom was barely in the movie and he sucked, Harry became friends with Pwter just to die!?, sand man was a pussy ass bitch, and MJ shouldve gotten the hint after the 1st bitch slap.

Find a way to bring harry back or some shit. Introduce carnage, I could care less about lizard man. I dunno where to go from 3, it was too much of a fuck up

I think it's unfortunate that so many people will be put off by Spiderman 4 because of the monumental fuck-up that was S3. The writer is a top-notch talent in my opinion, and hopefully whoever they hire to direct wont fuck up the screen play too much.

Much like the new Hulk movie, they need to have some awesome hype and great previews, and perhaps some early peeks that critics/fans can go gaga for. If they focus on 2 villains max, and especially if they focus on a single one, this should turn out to be a great film imo. I await casting and other various things, but they hired a writer i have full confidence in and agree with his vision.

First, Megan Fox would not make a good redhead. Second of all she's too run of the mill standard looking. Dunst has a unique look and charm and is gorgeous as a redhead.

I thought 3 was by far the best so far, with 2 being the worst. The character building was much better than the first 2 and the final fight was epic.

You lost all credibility as a movie goer to me....
