no sound!

ok, i'm on my mate's computer and there's no sound.

it's on xp home, i think.
it used to work fine, but then one bay it got the blue screen of death and windows had to be reinstalled, but because pc world are complete nonces, they kept giving all kinds of shhitty excuses and he never got the right xp back. so we downloaded a version of xp home but there is no sound. it's going into the tv through a hdmi cable, but sound is going in through what i assume are the sound cables of a component lead. i think iit's a driver problem.

Do all the basics first (check cables are plugged good, make sure it's not on mute, etc...)


Do you get system sounds such as when XP starts or shuts down or the beep when you're doing something it doesn't like?


Can you plug it into a different sound output device like headphones or other speakers?

And as you pointed out you can update the driver if all these fail.

Mainly, check other sound devices as then we can say for sure if the sound is working or not.

Is there a dedicated sound card or is it onboard sound? You could have speakers hooked up to one and the BIOS may be set to use the other...
