MLB 2K8 for PS3 contains bonus content
Posted on February 23rd, 2008 at 18:44 EDT
The latest issue of Game Informer has revealed that the PS3's Blu-ray version of MLB 2K8 has given the console a sizable advantage over the 360 regarding the amount of content that will be included in the final retail version.
"There is so much content included in the game that it couldn’t all fit onto the 360 disc. Free downloadable content will be provided for what was left out."
The 360 version of the game is having the unlockable stadiums and Cool Base alternate uniforms left out of the final retail version, while the PS3 version has the features included on its Blu-ray disc. The developers behind MLB 2K8 will make that extra content available as a free download for 360 owners on release day, but this is one of the times where the PS3's choice of software medium begins to pay off.
While this may not bother 360 owners who have access to Xbox Live, those who don’t will miss out on the content completely. This gives further leverage to PS3 owners as their game format is of higher capacity as well as having larger and upgradeable, custom, hard drives to store extra downloadable content. We'll have more for you on MLB 2K8 soon.

shame MS bought all the rights to that extra content that couldn't fit on a DVD9 for GTA :P
That's actually a good tactic, lol.
"what? you can't fit the game on a DVD?"
"no sir"
"ok, we'll beat the other guys to the punch. leave the content off their disc as well. well we'll cut you a $50 mil check. Turn it into DLC and give us exclusive rights to it"

As game developers start really taking HD assets seriously, it was only a matter of time before DVD9 reached it's limits. I'm sure there are ways to compress further, but what's the point when you have another format that just lets you just design games and not focus on compression alogos...

I still don't. The consumers won't care if the next Xbox is released too soon, most will just buy a Wii or a PS3.

I was about to say good win for BD (I guess it still is though) but wtf amount of content goes into a baseball game that requires more than 8 GB's?
I can only assume they plan to include real game footage in HD. Stadiums and uniforms? I'm tossing the bullshit towel in right now. This has jack all to do with DVD vs BD and everything to do with getting people to jump on Live.
OG, the next Xbox will arrive ~5 to 6 years after the X360 launched. I could explain more but that's for another thread.

LMFAO... It's very true though.
Hopefully many developers will go "Sorry sir, but we can't fit the game on a DVD so we will have to make parts of the game downloadable" instead of "Don't worry sir, we'll just develope DVD on mind and just do a hasty port for blu-ray" in the future.
This is good news and we'll see more things like this for blu-ray's favor sooner rather than later IMO.

Yea, it's a bit odd that this game, of all the games, has a problem with the capacity. It would be understandable if it was something like a shooter. But still, I think this situation is gonna come up a lot more in the future. We've all seen how games have gotten graphically better through a console's life cycle as the developers fully get to grips with a system, it's just debatable whether or not they're are gonna focus on making the game reach its maximum potential on one console, or focus more on fitting the game onto a DVD this time around. Everything probably would've been a hell of a lot easier if the 360 used HD-DVD for their games.

this is just the tip of the iceberg. as i've repeatedly said in the past, at first it will simply be content that the Blu-ray will excell at, but as more first party devs show what Blu-ray can give to gaming, third party devs will have to take note or become the poor cousin and lose sales. the industry in general has been saying that 2008 will be Sony's year... but i think they lace those statements and projected figures with a degree of pessimism (albeit subliminally hidden in phrases such as: 'will do better than...' will see Sony start to...) but i think it's going to be more significant than any analyse has said so far. we are already seeing signs that Blu-ray and Hard drives will make a difference. just wait til mid 2008 and beyond! 21 - 23 million sold by January 2009 is my estimation

i can't get my head around why we are being labelled fanboys because we had the intelligence to recognise the advantages of Blu-ray. so we can say that Killzone or RFOM are 'amazing' 'better than any 360 games' (which is fanboyish) 'awesome' 'better than GOW' (which is also fanboy), but we can't point out the reasons why? too many people have got themselves into a corner on the subject but lack the balls to simply say: 'ye, guess you were right'

Lali, you truely amaze me! how would you have us discuss it then? someone says there's no advantage (what would you say?) that response will garner others and at some point you would be called a fanboy. you could simply just say: 'yep, guess i was wrong, compression is good enough' and forget that assurance you clearly show in the post above, or you could do what you do on hundreds of other topics, argue the point! why is this subject any different? there is one difference: this topic will make or break next gen... why don't you just relax and let the inevitable take place because clearly you agree with us.
consider this: it's other short sighted people that have perpetuated this argument because they can't accept the obvious. once it's widely proven -- which it already has been to some of us -- to those gainsayers (who react because they ARE fanboys) then the subject will die down. it's the taking away of peoples liberties that infuriates forum users and the gagging of them that makes them struggle to make themselves heard. no mod on any other forum has reacted in the way you have to this subject. you may come back at me on this by saying those forums are lesser forums or even be abrasive by saying 'then go there instead of here'. this is what has changed on E-mpire.
take note of what we are discussing generally and check the amount of people on E-mpire. i do it all the time and i've got to say that what you like isn't what the majority like. please take this the right way and as a man. please respond in kind to my effort here to talk and not just put in a pithy remark that only serves to pull this forum into cliques. and please don't just post a pic. your response will represent you, don't forget that, and people do make mental notes

who said 'fuck MS?' the 360 has plenty of great games and if i could afford both machines i'd have both. this is an issue of 'space' if it inadvertently reflect on those consoles that support DVD9 then blame Sony, not those that chose Blu-ray for the reasons Sony put it in there... see it as two teams of footballers. you can dislike a player on one team but still admire that team overall, even though you support the other team :)

Cliffbo stop being a martyr. You do know it wasn't me that locked the GTA thread in the first place, right? Right?
I personally am a firm proponent of Blu-Ray being better than DVD. It's not subjective, it's a measurable number, a fact. We know this. I've supported it from the start. So we don't even disagree on that point. The difference is clear. But how many times does it have to come up? Threads like this where developers, you know, make a point of it, are certainly worthwhile. What got on Wounding Chaney's nerves was the degradation of the GTA thread because you all just went on. and on. and on. and on about how GTA was being held back because of the 360 ['s dvd drive] when none of us have information to substantiate that claim, however good GTA4 may or may not end up. And, I remind you, it wasn't myself who acted in regards to that thread. In fact, I unlocked it. So, it would be most auspicious for you to scrutinize the subject at hand, and not my character. Good day, sir.
P.S. If you have a rebuttal, or anything else to say, send a private message, and stop derailing the thread.

No it is not IMO. It's our actions what defines us not our thoughts. You could plan a mass murder for all the time you wish, but it will never meke you a killer unless you actually do it... It would not mean that your mentality is in it's full health though lol. So basicly your thought does not nessesarily lead in to actions...

On topic:
@ LaLi: Well, I have been busting some balls my self with this blu-ray > DVD lately, even though like it has been for you, it has been clear to me as well from the start. I think it's just the recent happenings that has led to it, like blu-ray's victory over HD DVD, the resent discussion related to GTA4 as the more news start to come before it's release, the news in this thread, etc. It will all calm down in the future I believe. But right now it's a valid subject for discussinon as the very things proving us right are happening. I can't deny that too much is too much but it is a very important advantage for the ps3 and so many things reflect to it for better or worse, that it inevitably leads to discussions, I think... I don't know why, but this matter is intresting for me and I like discussing about it. I'll try to keep the "point proving" as low as I can from now on as I had not totally realized how much I (we) had been saying basicly the same again and again...
