Johnny Lee, eat your hear out. Some day gamers will be playing a PlayStation 3 first-person shooter and will simply lean your head to see around the corners. When that happens, you will likely be using the new head-tracking technology that was being demonstrated for the PlayStation 3’s PlayStation Eye camera at GDC last week. I tried it out in the video above. Unlike recent head-tracking video sensations, this clip shows a set-up that doesn’t require strapping any Wii hardware to your head. Nor does it require fancy glasses, like this one made by a programmer from Sony.No. This version requires just the official PS3 camera. And a person with a face and some mobility in their neck.

A Sony rep said the technology is not yet announced for any PS3 games, but if they were showing it at GDC, I assume it’s ready to go. Okay, makers of “Killzone 2” and “Resistance 2,” get cracking.

Does "that" secret game use this technology?

Kinda new this already. The "some day" in the second sentence makes this obvious.

This could be bigger than Wii if done right. Not just the head, but the whole body could be tracked in any direction or speed. All we need is the right app and game to make it real. Until then it is just super kool sounding vaporware. Lets see is Sony goes some where with this instead of just a lab.

The "lean and peek" system in KZ2 would greatly benefit from this. You could either use the triggers to do it, or use your PSEye which would then free up your trigger buttons for other essential functions. I know somebody in a group over at SCE has brainstormed that already. I wonder what the limitations to making it happen are? Besides cash, I mean.

Awesome...A game like Time CFrisis would be awesome with this technology.
Or imagine a game like fight Night where you can sue that tech to evade your opponent's attack.

Man, the possibilities for this tech could be so far reaching as to last inti PS4, 5, 6, ect. What will Sony do with it? My imagination runs wild.

That exists already. The Fight Night one, I mean. Konami has a game like that. It's pretty fun. You get to go all Hokuto Shin Ken on your enemies once you dizzy them.

Lol just imagine a new user interface or controlling the xmb only with the head. Imagine controlling the pointer with your eyes.

And here be the reason I always wished the PSEye (or Eyetoy) had been included with the PS3 as a standard feature... *sigh*

What I really would have love to have on the PS3 is a voice command system and a really roboi feminine voice saying " hello user, today is * * * , the weather is * * * degres. you have ** connected do you want more " ?
just like in Starship troopers lol.
would be awesome to acces your game just saying " game => resistance. " " pause "...

And then you try to access the XMB-In-Game, but the female voice change to...

HAL: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Like I said in another thread, graphics is not all Sony has to play as the ace in their cards. They are just getting warmed up.

The EyeToy can already target a person's body movement, which only uses around 5% of the Cell compared to the EE, based on a statement by a Sony rep. Tracking a persons face and head , however, was the challenge. So I don't think it's a stretch to say that the PS Eye can do this, also while simultaneously tracking the body.

It's funny you mentioned that because this is exactly what Richard Marks said he was headed with the pheripheral in one of my OPM. ;)

It would be a waste if no game ever takes advantage of this.

a lot of games have been updated to use rumble, why not update them to use this? it would bring people back to the game and revitalize interest

A patch could be possible, I suppose. I'd prefer a game designed with the function in mind though as that would most likely provide the better experience.

We all know how "tacked on controls" go.

Because this probably requires at least 20x the work rumble does to add in, and could require a complete reworking of the game?

Lair is getting an analog control patch but again we don't know the volume of work involved in doing that.

Another bright idea is too integrate this technology into Gran Turismo for example. Just imagine using your head to look at the rear view mirror or the side mirrors while playing. I would also have loved the Eye toy to actually be mobile so when you get off the camera it follows you. I think some webcam can already do this but they cost too much.

Couldn't have been much at all considering the game is already able to work on the PSP, so the analog controls were already there.

I don't think the analog controls of the PS3 and PSP work with the same code. I think PSP control had to be programmed in from the start otherwise we'd have more games being controlled via PSP's.

thing is.. this tracks head movement right?
would that just be slightly annoying/painful after a while.

And i mean using it to peak round corners.. by moving you head? Sounds cool.. but we'll see where it goes?
