I won't say anything that'll break NDA but after the latest update which puts home at its best iteration and probably the most indicative release of the final product, the opinion amongst most of the beta testers is starting to change. Home is being likened to a "speed bump" in the way of gaming and a lot of testers are beginning to ask "why can't the xmb do that?"

Now we can all see the draw to Home it provides a social network where gamers can meet up, chat, and game together but the program is in need of a major overhaul no if, ands, or buts about it.

I intend to plead with the developers via the Home beta forums, but before I do I wanted to get some feedback from the PSI community.

Just some questions to get things going feel free to speak your mind:
What prospects about home excites you?
What do you want home to offer you thats unique to the playstation brand?
What would make spaces like the home theater, arcade, and your house worthwhile?
What features do you want most from the ps3 in general (think outside the box as well.)
Would a gamer profile akin to facebook or myspace (i use it only as an example) suit you better?

I'd think twice before flaming me or blindly defending Home... Sony needs our help on this one, lets tell them what we want/ need out of home... Its certainly not a bubble blower. We've all read the resistance, uncharted, and warhawk integrations for home and its step in the right direction but lets stop imagining the possibilities and start letting sony know what we want.

Well more of less, I love customization!!!

Things I want from Home...

1)Customization!!! Everything from my avatar, to my house, to the color of my menu system, and yes, a profile page would be cool. It doesn't have to be as long as a facebook tho--just a simplified version of it. btw--if I take the time to go into Home before I go into a game, I sure as heck better be able to customize my gaming experience. (music/in-game messaging hello!!!!)

2)Games Games and more mini games!!! Why am I going into home in the first place? Just to look at my virtual friends??! Well sometimes yeah, mostly--probably not. I want to be drawn to Home because of original PSN-like games that I can play only through the service. Games is the core of Playstation, and should be the core of Home.

3) User video theater...Ever heard of youtube??! Well, the quality sucks, but it's still huge!!! A video streaming theater (with a little administration) would go a long way!

come to think, my #2 probably should be #1...It's no secret--games sell platforms. Home is all about community??! Then why not have a Singstar theater where people can view everyone making a fool out of themselves lol...Bottom line, it has to be a good/compelling reason to jump into Home everyday. There should always be something new up, always something to check out, even if it's just an announcement. I come to the forums every day as a routine, and that's what Home needs to be. PS blog, ThreeSpeech, everything on those blogs should be booths in Home. If I could sum up Home in one sentence it would be...

A virtual forums, with a ton of fun mini-games and loads and loads of opportunity while staying in touch with the people that make these amazing experience.

Just some questions to get things going feel free to speak your mind:
What prospects about home excites you?
The possibility to have a social network and a virtual world to hang out and have fun!

What do you want home to offer you thats unique to the playstation brand?
Content, creation, a virtual life, the possibility to make things in that life you couldnt do in real, LIVE PlayStation (this is living comes in my mind)!

What would make spaces like the home theater, arcade, and your house worthwhile?
Going out to full movies would be cool but also events like an E3 or something.
The arcade is a great place to chill, i play a lot of flashgames on my PC and Pool in ICQ, so i wil spend some times there trying to make Highscores and thats all in my PS3, great!
The own Homespace is like a personalization from my own, beyond the character.

What features do you want most from the ps3 in general (think outside the box as well.)
Own content creation without the need of programming skills and for free, like they did with the theme creation.
Of course stuff like the ability to play own music and messaging people neverthless what you do at this moment.

Would a gamer profile akin to facebook or myspace (i use it only as an example) suit you better?
Oh hell no....

Nice thread by the way!

Some more options for profile information like there is now would be nice for sure.

I want Home for social interaction and strategy sessions with friends for multiplayer sessions.

I especially want Sony Pictures/third party studios and Sony BMG/Third party integration where i can download my movies/Music shopping as DLC.

I want demo theatres for upcoming movies showing trailers for said movies. I want a Sony theatre where music artists like U2 or whoever can shop their new singles when they are released and making of and music videos for those new Albums. Some live concert feeds for a reasonable fee would also be nice.

I want a Sony comedy central where comedians can upload their gigs or even do live performances in a Sony Comedian theatre.

I want Home not to be a speed bump to gaming like you say and would prefer easy access to games from Home and the option of accessing games without the use of home.

I also want the you tube services to see what various fellow Sony console owners get up to.

I want advertising done tastefully where we can answer questionaires about what interests us and only have that kind of advertising in our faces instead of the stuff we dont wanna see.

It would also be nice to see the top online game players game it out every once in a while for prize money with home viewers able to watch the action.

A good system to block you from ever seeing idiots you have blocked off your friends list i.e their avatars.

I want what has already been announced, integration with games like Uncharted, Resistance and Warhawk that goers even deeper than the stuff already announced.

Home Theater
I say leave the trailers in the PS Store its not worth in to be walking through the entire theaters 2 floors to watch 15 second game trailers we've all seen online long before Sony ever updates home. Recently I came across some flash shorts that are extremely well down some people have on going series. Wouldnt it be cool to go in to the theater and watch a 2 to 10 minute short.

Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/276650) Watch this!
Metal Gear Awesome (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/297383) and this too!
Fallen Angel: Teaser (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/192340)

It give gamers something else to talk about "Hey, did you see the new metal gear awesome?!" "you should go check it out its playing in the home theater right now."

Home Arcade

The draw to home is that its a social network, that can't be forgotten (I don't think I'm saying anything that hasn't been seen already) but when you jump onto an arcade game, the pool table, bowling isle, etc. you lose all site of not only you character but the people around you.

Lets keep the social network going strong instead of the solo arcade games that occupy the space now introduce more multiplayer games, gamers like contra, golden axe, street fighter these games foster a community through teamwork leader boards. (in fact the only game currently available that I actually like is evac.)

Allow me to see my character standing over the pool table or bowling, don't take the easy way out animate!

Casual is good but lets get some good old fashion competition going, put a rock climb wall in the the arcade space where friends could compete to see who could get to the top the fastest.

I'd like my PS3 to turn into a multimedia box. I'd like an itunes-like service (hell, why not just contract with Apple for itunes itself?) with video d/ls. I'd like TiVo-like functionality (Play-TV here in the US, I guess). I'd like a better browser (or a more stable one) that doesn't crash on gametrailers.com. I'd like the PStore to have every movie trailer up for download the day it's released to the net.

I'd like all of these things to happen soon, sooner than I need in-game XMB or Home as I understand it. Catch up to the Xbox's feature set before dallying with 3D avatars... but I am looking forward to Home, too. The recent news about Warhawk, Uncharted, and Resistance Home integration is pretty cool stuff.

What prospects about home excites you?

The community and services that will expand the gaming area and help to socialize with people while playing.

What do you want home to offer you thats unique to the playstation brand?

plenty of unique services which gave players the opportunity to share their gaming contents and their knowledge abour video games while interacting in a virtual worlds representing each person with their unique avatars without paying 1000 $ lol. just like a free MMO experience.
And maybe going further integrating gaming genre like rpg , fighting activities, racing, directly in home like mini games where community can interact with their avatars.

What would make spaces like the home theater, arcade, and your house worthwhile?

Creativity , sharing, customisation. showing what is the person' s tastes and likes without having to write or explain.

What features do you want most from the ps3 in general (think outside the box as well.)

anything involving the Eye Toy. and upcoming technology which will allow the gamer to controll games without any controllers.

Would a gamer profile akin to facebook or myspace (i use it only as an example) suit you better?

Nope I think Home is perfect by itself.

Too many issues for this thing to be publicly acceptable(HOME). Once they improve the frame rates and get rid of all the crashes then it should ready for a public release. I believe HOME on PSN will be the FULL featured 3D environment Sony has dreamed of. It will however take on several different forms(web based, cell phone interaction, even a PSP version), so some of the scaled down ideas, as well as the non-3d page views listed above are definitely viable answers....and if that is all you want then your needs should be delivered(and highly customizable). I think this software has the potential to revolutionize the way online communities meet and interact. But it must be delivered/executed properly. At its core will be the gaming community, but it can be more than that(gamers) as well.

I'm not even in the Beta at all, but oddly enough the one thing I'm really interested in is in-home ads. No seriously.

If they did Grudge 3, you can go watch the trailer in a theater or something simple, but when you get back to your apartment, it is actually grudged. The little kid runs about and hides, hair starts creeping out of places if you stand still for a second, phone rings and you get creepy sound out of it. That would be awesome.

Snakes on a plane 2? Have snakes show up in your apartment attacking you. Make home a game with ad-based mini-games themed to whatever upcoming release you are interested in. IE, you watch the trailer twice, and it gives you the option to add an ad to your home. Make some of them clever mental ones, where you have to try and figure out what changed.

Sorry, but that sounds like a blast to me. Free minigame ads themed to your apartment.

I'm also interested in the fact that you can meet up with someone you want to play stuff with ahead of time in Home, and easily go into the game, or create a strategy about the game before you get into it.

Home really just needs to be a place all about gaming, without being in the game.

I think what some people are forgetting is that Home won't be the only way to access your friends list, your own content, launch games. So saying that Home is going in the wrong direction I think is a bit off. Home will be great for some people. People who want more of a second life with more human like interactions with people. There's a reason why there are countless millions playing Second Life and WoW and others. It's just plain fun interacting with people in a virtual world like this. And while Sony is at it, why not add rooms to compliment the games, compliment content, and so on.

For those who want a more streamlined experience, they'll stick to the XMB interface.

You beta testers aren't beta testing what's to come on the XMB. You're mostly testing Home. There will be stuff added to the XMB that you're not seeing now as beta testers. To say that Home needs a huge overhaul without seeing what they are going to add to the XMB itself is really a stab in the dark.

I'm not saying that Home is all that, or mind blowing or anything. I'm not saying it doesn't need work, but I think some of you are viewing it as the only way to get certain things done. And it's just not. :)

Home is at the point where only a few things need to be tighened up, thing are being updated especially for EU testers anyway. The only concern I have will be for the servers, because the amount of people that will be loggin on if the survey is correct will be a serious strain. Some testers don't understand that Home is boring now purely because there is no public involvement. YET.
