Nope. lol
Hey guys,
i bought a PS3 on the EU launchday and the very first game i played on it was MotorStorm.
I was psyched for it since the first trailer in '05 and i wasnt disappointed. While the game has a bit to less content its still unique and theres nothing to compare. I also loved the WRC series (hope to see a new title on the PS3 ;) ).
Mr Kirshaw said in an interview with videogamer.com that you want some feedback or suggestions so here are some things i would like to see:
-Custom button layout, there are 2 different controls plus SIXAXIS but a complete custom option would be great (like in GT), because i really want to accelerate/break with the right stick.
-A cockpit view would make the game more intense, i bet a lot of people want it since the first trailer for MotorStorm 1.
-Custom paint jobs (no other optical tuning)
-More damage interaction, not just particular parts that break or deform.
-Little Hovercrafts for the ATV class that are a bit difficult to handle but wont be effected by the surface youre driving on.
Thats it, i think everything else will be great so or so, cant wait for the demo and thank you guys for giving me so much hours of fun!

With respectful greetings from Bonn, Germany
Maurice

I wrote, that I REALLY REALLY hated the rubberband AI and that it is not a viable alternative (not even for an arcade racer) to a good racing AI. I also said, they could include some basic tuning (like Suspension etc.) and faster loading... the rest I forgot AND I forgot to include some very important points^^ Like online lobby etc...

I wrote, that I REALLY REALLY hated the rubberband AI...
Thank you!

"makes it more exciting/ fun" my freakin' ass.
What's the point of racing for 7 minutes if the AI is NEVER lost, always behind you, ALWAYS behind you.

Defeats the purpose of skilful driving, extremely frustrating especially since races take like 7 mins.

Anyway that's MS1 so hopefully this time it WILL be noted.

Evolution Studios’ Paul Hollywood revels in the job title of Creative Lead. A shaven-headed extrovert, he could, frankly, talk for England, so it’s always a pleasure to interview him. We managed to grab him at the recent PlayStation Day, and here are the insights into the forthcoming MotorStorm: Pacific Rift that he delivered.

Q: What’s new in MotorStorm: Pacific Rift?

PH: Well, we’ve kept all the fun bits, and added to it. We didn’t want to break the core and, obviously, with MotorStorm, we were working for the PlayStation 3 launch, so there were going to be a few things we didn’t manage to get into the game. Like split-screen racing.

Q: Which I can see you have, with two players on the left and right of the screen?

PH: And we’ve got four-player split-screen, although we’re not showing it today. Split-screen racing is great, and I’ve got aspirations to make it a really good party mode.

Q: Another new feature which stood out was the influence of the vegetation and the environment. As you’ve made a virtual island, rather than recreated Monument Valley this time, did you find that liberating?

PH: It was a bit but, to be honest, we didn’t really create Monument Valley – it was still a MotorStorm track with a beautiful, iconic background. Pacific Rift is quintessentially Hawaii, but we’ve taken all the best bits and shoved away the things that we didn’t want like hula and Elvis. In any MotorStorm environment, we have a large amount of creative freedom to do what we want to do – to create the unique multi-route tracks that define the game.

Q: What’s the starting-point when you design a new track? Obviously, MotorStorm’s trademark is having tracks with very different characteristics.

PH: That’s right: we’ve elaborated on that even further. The first thing we wanted to do was put in a new location – Monument Valley was a bit of a passive location; it was just red rock. Which was good for us on a launch title, but now we think we can do so much more. So, in Pacific Rift, we’ve got 16 tracks, and those tracks have got loads of tension between them. You’ve got water tracks, vegetation tracks, high-altitude tracks and you’ve got volcanic ones. They’re not mutually exclusive – there are elements that are in all the tracks. As a starting-point, we picked an area when we went on the reference trip to Hawaii that we earmarked as ideal. We use that as our backdrop, then we start generating the different mechanics that the track is going to throw back at us, like the vegetation or the water. Then we start crafting our multi-route gameplay. That process takes months to get the balance right. A MotorStorm track is not just one track – it’s eight tracks in one.

Q: And, of course, it’s about the vehicle classes, with the bikes up top and the trucks down below. But now you’ve got monster trucks: what do they bring to the game?

PH: Monster trucks are cool, because you can completely destroy other vehicles by driving over them and crushing them.

Q: Can you drive over trucks in them?

PH: No, you can’t – the unstoppable big rig is still unstoppable. Each vehicle class has positive and negative characteristics – for example, the bike is fast but vulnerable. The monster truck is good in a straight line, not so good at taking the corners, but it’s really good at taking out other vehicles.

Q: And there are twice as many tracks in Pacific Rift?

PH: Yeah. We listened to the community and people said that there weren’t enough tracks in the first MotorStorm. Through downloadable content, we created 12 tracks for MotorStorm but, still, it was a console launch title, and we would have liked to have made more tracks. Starting on Pacific Rift we said: “Right, let’s have twice as many.” There are black volcanic tracks, deep jungle tracks and even a track set in an old abandoned sugar refinery – it’s like a first-person shooter.

Q: And presumably the physics engine will be in even fuller effect this time around?

PH: Oh yes – we give Havok a run for its money. We’ve improved every aspect: there are brand-new rag-dolls, brand-new physics collision stuff, improved driving models and a lot more destructible objects on the trucks. Those destructible objects help create danger and unpredictability.

Q: We saw in the demo a tower falling down on drivers.

PH: As you’re driving, we’ll fire a vehicle into the tower’s support, and it will come down across the track, so you’ll have to negotiate the debris. I don’t want to give too much away, but we also have an unexploded sea-mine on the beach, and as you drive past, we’ll fire one of the vehicles into it, so it explodes. If you’re driving past too close, you’ll get taken out.

Q: What’s the best aspect of making the second version of the game, given that you’ve got to grips with the technology and aren’t struggling to finish it in time for the PS3’s launch?

PH: It helps building on something that you already have. But I’ll tell you, when we started building MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, the first thing we wanted was split-screen racing. But our technology was all based on single-viewport, so we had to break everything to get the split-screen working. We learned our craft with MotorStorm, and now we’re perfecting it with MotorStorm: Pacific Rift.

Q: Will we see any new online modes?

PH: Yes.

Q: Any hints as to what they will be?

PH: Not yet – we’re keeping our powder dry at the moment.

Q: But Pacific Rift will be ready for Christmas?

PH: Yes. We are launching in Autumn 2008

Awesome interview.

Lol at this bit:
There are black volcanic tracks, deep jungle tracks and even a track set in an old abandoned sugar refinery – it’s like a first-person shooter.

It's one of those games that I don't REALLY want but seeing as it's how an improved/ polished MotorStorm just makes me go "hmm...Maybe if I see it for cheap on Amazon."
But from previews/ interview, I'm getting genuine signs of improvement (good ones) with a mix of "ehhh, not enough".

I think there is a reason they didn't call this Motorstorm 2.

i'm not at the point of being impressed with this game yet (although i'm sure i will be at some point) there are far too many details that can be picked apart and over-analysed. what we saw is work-in-progression. all we can take from what we've seen so far is the 'ambitions' of the devs... and i trust them

The vehicles look they stick to the ground the second they land on it. I remember the vehicles having a little bounce from the ground during big air jumps.

LaLiLuLeLo
06-26-2008, 08:42 AM
In the first video with the monster truck, the entire chasis bounces with the suspension whenever he lands. Monster truck wouldn't be bouncing around the same way a smaller car or truck does...

Jay Gee
06-26-2008, 09:06 AM
Yes they would, actually. I've watched enough Monster Jam with my cousin back in the day to know that they do. In fact, here's a youtube link with Tom Mentz and Ultimate Destruction doing just that.
iluTKf9m2Zk
That monster truck in the game should bounce at least once or twice. It landed right on the ground and stayed there.

GTAce

Yeah Monster Trucks always bounce around, because if the suspension would be too soft, the truck would rollover.

I'm liking the new shading effects, the fire effects have had a nice tweak, though when the truck bursts into flames, it looks like they just changed the smoke orange, so it looks like a big round blob of fire. They need to tweak that a bit. The textures appear a lot sharper, and I'm noticing a lot more plant life on the ground, as well as there being other nice visual tweaks like birds flying around all over the place. Considering they are only 40% at this point, that's pretty impressive considering M1 wasn't a bad looking game.

As for the physics, they may need a tweak here and there but they look pretty solid to me.

Looks like they are keeping sixaxis steering, which is a welcome relief to me. I won't play Motorstorm any other way. I just hope they give a full range sensitivity adjustment bar, rather than just 3 presets.

It's also nice to see that they seem to have eliminated the vehicle selection load times completely. The menus were seamless and had instant response times.

dnpmakkah
06-26-2008, 05:37 PM
Looks good so far. I wish the vehicle speed was faster, also I dislike the menu visuals. They should have gone with a sleak look IMO.

LaLiLuLeLo
06-26-2008, 05:57 PM
As long as the vehicle menus don't have load times I'll be happy.

On 'teh physics': I see what you're saying, at first I thought you meant the trucks were completely rigid or something, cuz they do have some bounce. Maybe they haven't tweaked it all the way yet, maybe they toned it down for playability, we'll see how it turns out in the coming months.

dnpmakkah
06-26-2008, 06:14 PM
Yes, in the end if it loads quickly then I'm cool with it.

I'm impressed with the game.

It's probably just the colours and the mild-ish improvement in graphics... but those combined on top of the original just makes it way more appealing to me. I'm liking what I see with the smooth edges on everything, almost invisible white highlights for outlines (even in drawing or painting) always give a nice illusion of smoothness.

I think I'm seeing some of that here too, it works well as a lighting 'trick.' Even Solid Snake has some of that going on for some of his lighting models in MGS4. :D

And of course the splitscreen, can't forget about that sucker.

Hands-on: MotorStorm: Pacific Rift

Posted Jul 21st 2008 4:15PM by Andrew Yoon
Filed under: Hands-on

Unsurprisingly, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift plays much like its predecessor. The build running at Sony's E3 booth was incredibly stable, feeling nearly ready for release at any time. Simply watching the trailers should give you a good idea of what to expect: it's just like MotorStorm, with branching paths through each track. However, the new jungle environments offer a bit more detail than the PS3 launch title. While there will be a few other things to think about while driving through the lush green, such as how flora and water will affect the cars, Pacific Rift is still instantly accessible.

Key to successful racing in Pacific Rift is to think about the environment and the vehicle you're in. Obviously, motorcycles will have great manueverability through the world, but it will be unable to break through dense clusters of green. Decisions must be made with split-second reflexes. Granted, had we more time with the game, we'd be able to start learning the tracks and the varied branches throughout. Choosing a random turn to be greeted with an unexpected jump certainly gave us a number of thrills.

Boosting is an even more vital part of the game as environmental factors will now affect your boost meter. As you hold down the turbo, your engine will begin to overheat. However, if you go into shallow water, you'll be able to cool down your engine, giving you a few more seconds of precious boost. However, if you encounter lava, the engine will heat up almost instantly. Figuring out the balance between boosting and choosing shortcuts adds an appreciable amount of depth to the franchise.

The two key features new to MotorStorm that will have everyone talking is the split-screen multiplayer and the new vehicle class: the monster truck. We're glad to report that split-screen multiplayer runs incredibly smoothly. We were able to do multiple races and we never experienced a drop in the framerate. Finally, MotorStorm is becoming the party game it was always meant to be!

Playing as the monster truck is an absolute blast. Although it may not be as speedy as the other vehicles, we cannot deny the fun of simply running over other hapless vehicles. It works just you'd imagine (really, just imagine being in a monster truck). We weren't able to win our race, but we were impressed at how well the monster truck was able to keep up. Had we known of better paths through the level, we may have been able to place a bit higher with the monster truck.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift adds everything players have asked for in the original game. It is a vastly improved experience from the first game, and with new multiplayer modes, we have a feeling this will be an excellent addition to any racing fan's collection.

They gotta fix the crash physics so cars BEND instead of just falling apart so when you land on a car it's not YOU who loses the balance and rolls (because top of cars don't bend) it should be the guy you landed on that feels the pain.

It's undertitled for a reason because it's just MotorStorm in a new setting.

They could have named the original MotorStorm: Coyote Valley in the same way.

Hope they haul the gfx engine altogether for MotorStorm 2, originally it looked wonderful, now even that Disney MTX game has got better textures. That's my only gripes because the playability is right there.

Well you could also add some DoF and more delicate motion blur effects to enhance the feel of speed.

Oh and split screen, that's good too :)

Oh and make that multiplayer lounge usable. Now it's still ridiculously uncool even after they dumped the mandatory 15 second loading times for the vehicles on a rock.

Oh and you should give users some power over the vehicle liveries, I've mostly disliked all the alternatives available yet. No more microtransactions for subtly different car types/liveries, that's just plain stupid business.

They gotta fix the crash physics so cars BEND instead of just falling apart so when you land on a car it's not YOU who loses the balance and rolls (because top of cars don't bend) it should be the guy you landed on that feels the pain.

So far this really looks like (gameplay wise) MotorStorm with a new setting.....Hmm, I'm not convinced of a purchase yet.

Off topic, but your sig got to me. Bill Gates also said "The internet will never amount to anything". Recently he said "The internet is the core of our business". Why the change?
He figured he didn't have to own the internet to make money from it. So now he slaps warm and fuzzy names on stuff you already get for free and charges you for it. It's like living at a beach house and having to rent the sand. Hence my sig for LIVE.

On Topic:
Game looks bad ass. All the improvements I wanted seem to have been addressed. Especially split screen. That could have really made this game a lot more fun for when I invite friends over or something.

curryking1
07-29-2008, 02:25 AM
I'm with masteratt totally on that. If you land on a car, the boy underneath ought to feel the hurt.

The top guy losing balance and ending up lagging behind... it just doesn't make sense and definitely does not match up with the attitude of the game which is to be the aggressor...

I totally forgot about that problem as I never bought the game. I only played the demo and not for too long either.

I mean even Mario got that right and the game of Mario could've been a million things being completely fictional and so abstract in so many ways. If Mario jumps on the Goomba and steps on his face, the Goomba gets, correctly, freaking pwned.

Okay it might not be realistic but neither is falling off a huge cliff and then suddenly spawning back into the race ¬_¬

I'm seriously not buying it unless they fix that.
It just fucks the whole gameplay up.

As curry said you are meant to be agressive, that's what they keep saying but when you jump you are suppose to say "ohhh, i better not land on my friend there! :ghey:!" ???

VG you shouldn't need 3 cars, probably a minimum total of like 4 or 5 tons, to 'pwn' a car beneath you! :P

I dunno, from my experience... using the pick up trucks and landing on buggies... wasn't getting the impression I was hurting them from up above at all.

At E³ 2006 the driver could fall out of the open BUGGYS.....
Maybe they dropped it because of framerate or physic problems.

It's wreckless arcade fun.
That's how even the developers are pushing it.

got to agree, it's being promoted as an arcade racer by the devs so i'd say it's pointless trying to apply real world physics with this game... hell you'd probably have a mini game in there trying to back out of the bushes and trees or water... that wouldn't be fun

E3 2008: Motorstorm:Pacific Rift (Interview and Hands On)
Posted by: Chuck at 7/20/2008 12:52 PM - Comments (0)
More On: E3 2008 Gaming Nexus

The original Motorstorm was one of the better looking titles for the PS3 and did a fairly good job of showing off the strengths and weaknesses of the PS3. You had amazing visuals, interesting SIXAXIS controls, and some really brutal load times. The follow up game looks to build on those strengths and fix a lot of the issues with the first game. In our chat with Paul Hollywood, the creative director on the project and he confirmed that the game will not require a hard drive install to increase speend.

The game is placed on a new imaginary jungle island which provides for some new challenges. You'll now have to deal with foliage and water which can slow down smaller vehicles. Water is important in other ways as it can instantly cool down your engine from boosting which adds a new tactical element to the game.

I did have the chance to go through one quick race in the game against Mr. Hollywood using the game's new split screen mode. The game builds on the amazing visuals of the first as the graphics are just jaw droppingly gorgeous. While Pure comes close I still think Motorstorm: Pacific Rift has a slight edge on them graphics wise. Gameplay is still fast paced and the game retails the multiple paths through a course setup from the first game.

Load times for vehicle selection are now almost non-existant as you now pull up a 2D card with the information about the vehicle rather than the 3D model of the car. This may change by the time the game ships but for me it works. Level load times have also been decreased dramatically and this isn't final code. The racing itself will be familiar to fans of the first game (why ruin what works well). I was able to narrowly defeat Paul but I have a sneaking feeling he let me win. Hopefully I'll be able to get a re-match this fall when the game is released.

Dante to appear in MotorStorm Pacific Rift as well?
12:3806/09/2008Posted by David ScammellEmail This Post Email This Post One Comment

Following on from last month’s rumour that Old Snake may be featuring in Sony’s ‘brutal offroad racer’ MotorStorm Pacific Rift, we’ve spotted another character in the latest MotorStorm trailer that looks like a certain devil slayer.

A short clip of what looks like Dante riding a motorbike occurs at 1 minute 5 seconds into the latest trailer and we’ve pulled a screen which you can see below. Is it really him? Looks like it.

We’re digging into the latest build of Pacific Rift as we speak, so look out for some hands on impressions and possibly a few more gameplay videos soon.

MotorStorm Pacific Rift is due for release next month exclusively on PlayStation 3. Pre-order it from Play.com and you’ll even get a free t-shirt. You can even enter promo code MTRSTORM for £5 off. Nice.

Heh, not a chance. You can see the guy seeming Old Snake in the E3 trailer and it's clearly not him. And I don't mean it when you see his back, but in the previous cut in the trailer you can see him as the camera focuses on the vehicles behind.

MotorStorm Pacific Rift is due for release next month exclusively on PlayStation 3. Pre-order it from Play.com and you’ll even get a free t-shirt. You can even enter promo code MTRSTORM for £5 off. Nice. Now that's the real news.

Yay! (http://psinsider.e-mpire.com/index.php?categoryid=17&m_articles_articleid=991)

Some details I haven't posted here yet:

To all this we can add shorter loading times than MS1 despite the fact an installation won't be required (as stated by the developers in interviews at Leipzig's Games Conference) and the ability to skip the slow motion crashes at the press of the X button (as confirmed by gamers who got to play the demo at PAX). Plus the inevitable DLC.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift demo details (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=233587)
News by Tom Bramwell

Sony has confirmed the contents of the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift demo due to be distributed to Qore subscribers in the US and randomly selected European PSN users starting this Thursday, 11th September.

The track you get to play is Rain God Spires - an Air Zone track that takes you along a bumpy coastal mountain circuit with plenty of ups and downs to highlight the game's massive draw distance.

There's no online play in the demo, but you will be able to play it in two-player split-screen as well as single-player.

If the name sounds familiar, it should; Rain God Spires is a sort of sequel to Rain God Mesa, the mountaintop track that starred in the original MotorStorm demo and gave us our first glimpse of what Evolution's racing game - now series - has to offer.

Check out today's MotorStorm: Pacific Rift hands-on preview for a bit on Spires, and more on the Cascade Falls and Wildfire tracks, along with some of our observations about track layout in general, the game's visuals and the new monster truck.

Hands on here (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=233563)

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Gets Dated
And you thought next month looked crowded before…
by Greg Miller

US, September 11, 2008 - Remember how we were all complaining about how crowded next month was with huge releases -- LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space, BioShock, etc.? Things just got worse in a good way.

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is headed for the PlayStation 3 on October 28, 2008.

The racing game sequel will feature eight vehicle classes, head-to-head, four-player split-screen; and 16 multi-route tracks. There are also going to be Trophies, so go ahead and preorder this.

And speaking of preorders, the official PlayStation Blog reports that if you go and preorder from GameStop, you'll get an exclusive demo for the game where you can play with the computer or against a friend in split-screen mode.

More preorder campaigns are coming, according to the blog.

but what I'm saying is that the game was better than the demo. some games, a demo is a direct representation of the final game (looks, FX, frame-rates, etc.)

The demo is very barebones and short, but I can't complain about it beeing free and timed exclusive :-p

It's graphically superior to MS1 although different as well, even though I feel it's not a final build. For some reason the sound didn't seem as good as MS1's to me, but it could be the demo or just my feeling. The vehicles handle better than before. It's fun to see smaller vehicles running away from the monster truck, hehe.

Although it's not bad, I'm sure this demo doesn't make the game any justice. I'm looking forward to the full game.

Left: demo. Right: 80% complete build.

To those who have played the demo, bear in mind it's from an older build. Even though the time of day is different as you could expect variations in all of the tracks, note the increased detail in the mountains and the addition of more vegetation. Texture work should be improved to some extent as well.

Had to try my free demo(EU) to compare, and it's like the pics to the right, but a lot sharper and more saturated. Missing a lot of foliage then...
I don't like the track at all, hopefully it's the most boring of them all. If I was in charge, I'd tell them to work on it another year, does not feel like a sequel at all. But to be fair, it's not named MotorStorm 2...
The super chocolate mud is gone, the awesome crashes are toned down, the wheels are floating above the surface, and the monster truck sucks. The original target render was awesome, but they have gone even further away from it.

I guess they're a bit in a rush to get the game out in October and they didn't have time to provide a more updated demo. They're probably not proud of it and there's a chance the public demo won't be the same one. It'll be nice to see the improvements from the demo in the final game though.

Yeah, you can read that at Wikipedia...

and other than that (I am not sure, if I remember correctly), they show bad mp games as PS3 covers... Gamespot did so too!

The funniest thing however is... they don't use Full RGB with the PS3, which is alright by me (my new TV doesn't support it, yet it looks better than my old with it enabled), but they in return should calibrate their capture card to do a calibrated video.

I agree Cliff, I played it also, but I have one pb with this game : I'm afraid that tracks will be all as short as the one of the demo.
They've created 16 tracks for this MS2, but if it's for having shorts tracks, that's a shame. I hope I'm wrong with.
Anyway I'm a huge fan of MS1 and I'll get this game.

Matt
09-16-2008, 10:29 PM
I really doubt they'll all be that length. I reckon that's probably the shortest track in the game, and they've used that one to keep the size down for a demo.

I'll be happy if the tracks are the same kind of length as the ones from the first game.

Segitz
09-17-2008, 02:04 AM
I hated the longer tracks of MS1... especially on Tier 4, when you only had to be first at the very end of the last lap... one tiny mistake and you could race the whole 20 minutes again... NOT FUN (well, this is more of an AI problem than with the track... but I doubt they toned down on the rubber banding... it is "brütal offroad racing", as Hollywood stated it)

masteratt
09-17-2008, 02:10 AM
Rubber band AI is the only reason I've stopped playing MotorStorm and one huge reason that might stop me from getting MS: PR.

What's the freakin' point of racing if the AI is on your ass all the freakin' time.
I can drive perfect for 2 laps then for some reason on the 3rd lap I randomly flip over and WHOOSH, the whole fuckin' army of AI racers go past me and I'm last.
It indeed as Segitz said, NOT FUN!

And it's not a very 'brutal off-road racing' when they just pass you and it takes you ages to catch up lol.
But when YOU are in the lead...No sir, no safety for you, the AI must be close to you at ALL times.

Pffft.

/rant at stupid game design, not the whole game itself though it ruins it most of the time.
