In my case I had to back everything up 'less I lose everything (that was supposed to be changed in the latest firmwares but it still informed me that ALL of my data would be lost).
So basically, get a removable hard drive and back that sucker up.

Everything but the user accounts and configuration. Do a backup of your game saves, demos and multimedia content with an external drive. Depending on how much you have on the HDD, you might have to use the backup utility.

Sonys system does not support resizing partitions... thus all data stored on the HDDs will be lost.

Do all external hard drives work or does the PS3 only read certain ones VG? What drive do you use?

The ps3 will read any standard external HDD. As long as it is formatted as fat32.

Most likely yellow dog linux 6.

You won't have to pay for them again, you just have to go to the download list in the store and download them.
With some of the games, you have to download the starter pack/demo before you download the file that activates the full version.

Remember that there is a limit on DLC. Only 5 re-downloads permitted.

just a quick question... where do i d/l linux for ps3? with the PC or PS3?
You have to download it on your PC and then make an ISO
If you're going for YDL, then go to here (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/)
For PSUbuntu, go here (psubuntu.com/installation-instructions/)
I would give you the full link to the download list on YDL, but the address bar and copy function is disabled here at work.
I will warn you though, there are some problems with PSUbuntu and the latest PS3 firmware, meaning you won't be able to connect to the net through wireless. I haven't tried YDL yet, but I'm gonna give it a go when I have the chance.

a little correction, its up to 5 different PS3s. You can redownload the games, however many times you want to on the first PS3.
That's nice to know, I thought it was just 5 downloads.

i couldn't find a source, but I know from experience thats it atleast 5. Because when I first downloaded the games on my original PS3 thats one 1 PS3. Then I have three close friends that I gave them my email address and pw. And they downloaded the games thats 4 PS3s. And then I redownloaded the games when I got my refurnished system, when my old PS3 died. Thats 5 PS3s right there, and I just checked the games are still there in my download list.

Could you try deleting and downloading a cheap one which you know has been downloaded 5 times? It would be nice to confirm this.

you can't because once you buy it, it disappears from the PS Store front. And it goes in your download list.

From wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Network) (I know it is not always trustworthy)
Since master/sub accounts are not linked with the PS3 serial number, which allows users to buy and sell used consoles, they can be used with different physical consoles as a guest user. Therefore a single PS3 console can have multiple master accounts. A PSN registration is required for the PlayStation Store access and a guest user's account can be used to download PSN Store purchased items to a friend's console, but an account is not required to access the PS3's own web browser. The ability to use PlayStation Store content licenses for re-download is limited to five different PlayStation 3 consoles.

Question
I purchased some downloadable game content on the PLAYSTATIONŽNetwork. Part of the product description says the content can be used or downloaded on up to five (5) activated PLAYSTATIONŽ3 computer entertainment system's. What does that mean?
Answer
This means that the content that you purchased may be used by other users on an activated PLAYSTATION 3 after you downloaded the content onto your PLAYSTATION 3. Some content may require the user to have a PLAYSTATION Network account, and other content may require you to have additional game content that may be sold separately. For example, you may need to purchase a full game in order to use the character that you purchased on the PLAYSTATION Network for the game.
Please review the use restrictions associated with the content you purchased. The content may be played on up to 5 activated PLAYSTATION 3's at any one time.
But I personally never try it.

Hmmm, nice detail. Now I'm not sure anymore whether you can download something more than 5 times on the same system.

You can buy a version that comes with all the discs and manuals and stuff, or you can go here (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/downloads/) and download the ISO.

Yeah, I dld 6.0 on friday, but I am yet to try it...
hopefully, the repositories aren't as restrictive, as they were with 5.0...
Does anyone know, if UDF2.5 support is already present (i.e. reading Blu Rays) or if WiFi finally supports something that is safe to use (i.e. WPA or WPA2)?
YDL is designed for HDTV, right?
So if I install it on my PS3, will it display on my SDTV?

It should, no worries. Though I don't think it'll look pretty...
I'm not too bothered about that. I was more worried about getting a blank screen when it loaded up.

Read the FAQ at Terrasoft...
when installing YDL on a non-hdtv, you need to switch your resolution to make it work...

I did that ages ago, using this guide (www.myspace.com/playstaion3hddmod). I sopped using it because 1) It looked damn ugly. 2) My PS3 had to lie down.
Nice to know that I wouldn't have to mod the cable if I felt like doing it again though.

It will work. But it will not be very functional as everything will be very big and many apps will have windows outside your screen area.
OK, I think I'll leave it until a get a decent telly.

A wise decision, imo.
Hopefully that should be pretty soon. I'm gonna ask my nan if she can come in a do a finance deal on a TV when she comes back from holiday. I can't get one myself because the place I live has a bad credit history :(

Shouldn't it already be an iso??
And, I don't think, it is just yet possible to make the iso bootable from USB (though, it could be done with Linux)
Well, I downloaded it from the german mirror, maybe the AU one is different.
But keep in mind, WinRAR can open .iso files^^

You have the iso, just open it with Nero and it should work.
Also, the PS3 OS doesn't allow you to install from a USB-key, so that's not an option.

If the "otheros.bld" supports it, it should work... but I have yet to see a "pendrive linux" for PS3. I mean, Swiss Army Knife for PS3 has a built in web server inside the otheros, so a "boot from usb" option should be manageable.
You can even install it onto an external drive (dunno if it works though, the installer at least shows external drives for partitioning).
