Warner Music albums, from a fiver, can be blasted out of any music player.
More trouble is brewing for the bods at iTunes with the news that music download service 7digital.com has teamed up with Warner Music to become the first European download store to offer DRM-free Warner Music MP3 downloads.
Initially available to customers in the UK, Ireland, Spain, France and Germany, 7digital has taken an aggressive stance with selected albums from Warner Music available for a while at £5 (or €7) a pop.
This bonza deal includes classic albums from The Smiths, Fleetwood Mac, Jane's Addiction, REM, and Funeral for a Friend amongst a host of others. The tracks can be played on any music player, unlike iTunes who's AAC-encoding virtually restricts downloaders to iPod-only rockage.
The duo is also working in partnership to offer an extended range of digital music products such as album bundles stuffed full of additional content. The site will also feature dedicated artist and label pages that can be edited remotely by artists and music labels to keep fans as up to date as possible with the latest news and toons.
John Reid, head honcho at Warner Music Europe commented, "This deal will offer music fans a new level of flexibility in their use of tracks... We believe that providing customers with this assurance of interoperability will encourage sales of music downloads and ultimately help the development of new digital music experiences."
The addition of Warner Music's MP3 catalogue means that more than 80 per cent of 7digital.com's 3.5 million tracks are now DRM-free.http://www.t3.com/news/warner-joins-7digitals-drm-free-revolution?=35361
