I brought home smash just like everyone else here only do discover that my wii would not read it. At first I thought it was a defective disc, but after getting on support.nintendo.com I found this...
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/repair/repair_form_us_ssbb.jsp
Now it looks like I have to send my Wii in to get fixed, lord knows how long that will take, and until then I cant play smash. Apparently everything is free, but its still a huge inconvenience for somebody who has done nothing but anticipate this game for over a year. I even went out yesterday and tried to buy another wii, but theres not one within a hundred miles of me. Well Im gonna send my Wii out tomorrow and pray that it gets back quickly.

dude!...that sucks hardcore!
I read that it has been happening to a few people on rare occasions.... I guess the dual layer disks aren't making the Wii very happy!

Yeah, my Wii was not very happy. Nothing compared to the way I feel though. Had to stop myself from throwing my wii across the room.

My Wii preformed a system update and then read the game fine.
I thought it was kind of strange, but completely forgot about it after the intro movie.

Mine did the update as well.
That sucks man. I am frustrated because I haven't been able to play an online match. It says I am connected and gives me a friend code... but it will never find anyone. I have been trying to find friends to play with, so add me to see if it works: 0602-5944-3175

I kind've hope it happens to me.
Because my wii keeps making a weird noise every time it reads a disc and it's worrying me

Well I sent her out yesterday morning, so It might be back to me late this week or early the next. Wanna hear something funny though, at the same exact time I went up to fedex to drop it off, a lady brought her kids Wii in for the same reason and we both had a good laugh/cry together.

I get a "cannot read disc" occausionally while playing. I also get it while playing Zelda and Galaxy, but I think those are normal (I hope/assume) when compared to this issue.
From what I understand, users with this issue are not able to read the disc at all.

On the support site that Delirious linked us to, it says that the Wii's affected cant CONSISTENTLY read the data. I bet, if tried 20-30 times, kinda like the disc read errors on the ole' PS2, it will read it eventually. But, doing this over and over for a system relatively new? MEH. Id probably send it in myself.
Its good to see a bunch of users arent trying home remedies though. I wouldnt want to pop that bad boy open.

So last night I sat down to play a little SSBB, and I would always lock up on specific maps or on certain stadium mini-games.
Give that fact, plus it will lock on Galaxy and Zelda at certain points as well, I will join you and send my console in for repair/cleaning. They said it will take around 9-15 business days to complete. Looks like I will be playing some Xbox instead for the next two weeks or so.
Edit
I decided to stick and rename this thread so others having this issue can get the info and link in the first post.

^Yeah probably a good idea to go ahead and send it in.
Nintendo said that smoke and grime are the cause of this problem, so if you live in a smoking household Id suggest buying a small fan or something to keep smoke away from your wii as much as possible. Ive had my wii at my friends house for many months, and we smoke the grass on the regular so I bet that was the main contributer to mine.
edit to wolfman: Did you say 9-15? Wow, I sent mine on Monday and it already says that mines being shipped back. Theres no way it should take that long unless for some reason you didnt get the fedex 2 day air shipping.

More then likely, the shipping dates are exaggerated to save their own ass. Did you know how long it would take yours?

I am sending it on Monday, so I will get an actual time frame once they receive it.
Funny, no one in my house is a smoker. I don't know why, but there are certain maps or games that will lock up every time. I took the game to my neighbors and played with the kids in neighborhood and their console read it just fine. Meh, just luck (or unlucky in this case) of the draw.

Just an update...
It was not until early April when I finally sent my unit in for service. Just had a lot of things going on, and it was not on top of my list of things to get done. Anyway, I got it back in about one week from when I actually sent it (quick turn around). However, once I pop the game back in, I get the same error message.
I give customer service a call, explaining the issue and how it still exist, so they decided to just send me a new unit and game disc. I sent the old unit back early this week, and should get my replacement this weekend or early next week.
While it sucked to get it back with the problem still there, it is nice to know that I will be getting a working replacement unit without any hassle. Woohoo!

Happened to me...hopefully they'll fix it or give me a good option to recover my downloaded VC games...anyone know if they are cool about replacing these or not? I'm worried after Wolf's story...but I should get it back tomorrow or Wednesday.
My brother bought it and as much as I dislike smash I'd like to give it a fair shake especially online and see, and hopefully turn my opinion around. But he sold Phantom Hourglass to get this before I could play it, so I'll be upset if it sucks.

The drama is over!
I received a fresh new unit, with brand new Smash Bros disc earlier this week. All is working fine now with no problems.
All of my saved data was transfered, and I was able to re-download my Wiiware apps (I had no VC games) again without problems - even the apps that cost "points" (web browser).
----------
In the long run, sure it took longer than I wanted, but in the end I got a new working unit and disc without much hassle.
