OMG i hate it now to play on my SDTV...

Okay first, a friend of mine (i love this guy) bought a 24" 1080p HP Pavillion.
Looks slick, like the PS3 with that color.
Well he came to me with that thing and we plugged my PS3 in it via HDMI.
Okay, after seeing the "Sony Computer Entertainment" screen i got tears in my eyes, of joy.
The XMB looks so sharp and clear on this baby... jeez.
The first game i played was the GT5P demo and thats sick, you see so much details, especially in the cockpit view, its scary.
I never noticed the blue lights in the cockpit from the Mazda Atenza. lol

I also played Warhawk, MotorStorm, Lego Star Wars, Oblivion: GOTY, Resistance, GTHD Concept, EoJ, PJM demo, Codemned 2 demo, Echochrome demo, SEGA Superstars Tennis demo () and R6: Vegas.
Unfortunately, i couldnt play Uncharted or watch a BD. 8(
But its incredible, everything is so sharp, the colors are incredible.
You see a lot more and you can play better in HD, especially shooters and racing games.
I dont want to know how good this looks on a 40" TV.

My normal TV looks so washed out and there is so much flickering....
I knew that the difference will be this big, but im sad i have to play on my shitty SDTV now. :cry2:

Oh and the WipEout HD trailer in 1080 is awesome. :thumbl:
Cant say more now, im still a bit speechless.

So if you want to donate a 1080p television to me, pm me. lol

Once you go HD, you don't want to go back to SD.

Even component cable does no justice to the awesomeness that 720p and higher resolutions are through HDMI. PS3 really takes advantage of HDTVs. I'm going to be Captain Obvious and say that if you're playing PS3 games on an old TV, you're missing out.

I'm glad I have an HDTV for when the time comes to buy a PS3 (metal gear solid bundle). Even the 360 i'm playing on 720p through component and I play Call of Duty 4 a lot, when I go to lucent beam's house and if I try to play it over there she has an SD tv I can't do it. It's just not the same game anymore. SD tv is like breaking your legs and trying to win a race compared to the HD.

I have been gaming in HD with my original Xbox and playing some PS2 games in Progressive scan since 2004 when I purchased my first HD set.
The Hitachi supported 720P & 1080i I was shocked when I first saw my 360 on the 50" 1080i display... Since I moved to Full HD last year I really have an appreciation for 1080P visuals.

^Yeah 120hz is the only thing I'm missing now. :(
My display supports xvYCC and superwhite, but the 120hz is nice for BD movies. It's kind of subjective, because some people don't like the look of 120hz, but I think it really gives that 3D effect.

P.S.

At least when you would go back it would look extra nice :P

And congrats GTAce, hopefully you can get yourself a nice monitor or TV for 1080p goodness :)

I hope to get a nice, good quality 24'' 1080p monitor in the future. Maybe in a year or two though because I have no rush really. My monitor is native 1680x1050 but is capable of displaying a digital 1080p signal which is convenient :P

^ It doubles the frames making motion even crisper and smoother. Personally I think it gives that "window effect"; that's an expression people use saying the picture is so clear it looks like you are looking at something through a pane of glass... This feature can vary by display, because I have seen some 120hz sets that create an odd picture and some displays just look jaw dropping. The actual source feed makes a big difference, because 1080P BD or HD-DVD looks amazing.

I have a sanyo 32 inch 720p 1080i hdtv. When I first turned on my ps3 with it plugged into the hdtv, my jaw dropped to the floor. It looked so good compared to my 32 inch flat pannel sdtv. Everything, including blue ray movies, look so bright and detailed. I know this is gonna sound silly, but I bought High School Musical 2 on blue ray and watched it. I almost couldn't look at the screen, because the colors were SO VIVID and BRIGHT and CRISP that I just had to watch the movie in total aw of the picture quality.

Nodieza (who hasn't visited here in a while) or "The Jew" as SPF fans know him as, bought a 40" Samsung with 25000:1 contrast (1080p). It is amazing. I'm saving up to buy it for Metal Gear Solid IV, as that game is one of the most important things happening this year. $1200 USD

Also, I noticed how hilarious it is to play Tekken 5: Dark Ressurrection on an SDTV. It's exactly the same (as far as I can tell) as normal 5 graphically. Much better than the PSP game though..(duh)

I did once, at a friend's house. It was painful, and the fact that the TV was like 10 years old and that it was quite far away didn't help.

Yeah, there is a huge difference still. Only the people who haven't had the chance to do the test or who are short sighted claim that there is no difference. Several members here, myself included, can tell the difference as it's like night and day.

ok a question: can any of you guys tell a difference between 1080i and 1080p? Because from what I heard anything below 40', you won't be able to tell a difference. Between the two.

VG Aficionado
03-22-2008, 01:06 PM
The difference between 1080i and 1080p is quite noticeable in motion. 1080p is sharper and gets rid of some artifacts you get with 1080i, no matter what size of TV you're talking about. However, that's harder to spot by most people than the difference between 720p and 1080p on smaller screens, for instance.

Kiwi
03-22-2008, 01:14 PM
I used to have a 26" 1080i TV, and now I've got a 14" SDTV :cry2:

As the room I'm in now isn't that big, I can't really get a big TV, so I'll probably end up getting something around that size again within the next couple of months. There's a good deal on a 22" Samsung at work at the moment.

But I will say that going from HD back to SD really sucks. When I first moved over, I wasn't that aware of the quality difference. Once you go back though, you wonder how you didn't notice it.

VG about covered it in his explanation...
The P stands for progressive scan and i stands for interlace.
Progressive scan refreshes the entire image and interlace scans in layers.
The result is progressive scan provides a smoother, sharper & crisper image.
Some argue you can't tell the difference between 720P/1080i & 1080P on a display smaller than 40", but I would argue you can't see the difference on a display smaller than 32". Once you get accustom to viewing HD you can definitely tell the difference between different resolutions of the source material.

curryking1
03-22-2008, 03:18 PM
It also depends on how close you are to your screen. Different sizes need different viewing distances. Your eyeballs can only do so much ;)

30-32'' is like a typical family room kind of T.V. I would guess, and for typical viewing distances in a room like that the 720p to 1080p gap is there in good degree I think.

When you're like me at 20.1'' (computer monitor) you have to be for sure sitting closer to notice the difference.

I'd say like 10 feet or more and my screen is pretty much not that great... let alone playable :P

I'm usually at 5 or 6 feet away, I think that's pretty ideal for my monitor to play games.

It essentially depends on your eyes, your perception and how knowledgeable you are. Some people can't tell the difference between a properly calibrated 1080p high fidelity set and a good SDTV, others will notice the smallest differences. You just can't provide an opinion that would satisfy everyone.

Yeah, that exactly describes it^^

I am GLAD interlacing is gone for good, at least with DVDs and Blu Rays and games... Most, if not all TFTs do a really crappy job at deinterlacing the material and thus the picture is shit. There are good ones, but since it already is old tech, I couldn't care less!

I have a 19" Sammy. It's a computer monitor but it looks awesome 1080i with HMDI. I find the flickering is greatly reduced when hooked up over HDMI as opposed to the component. I'd like to get around a 26" when I get the money. For some reason I actually prefer sitting closer to the screen when I'm playing games so I doubt I will go much bigger than 30" ever. Although I'd love to have a bigass 1080p for my blu-ray's...

the only problem with HD is that you WILL suffer once you lose it- for any reason. look at me; I have a TV so small that I honestly thought it was one of those old portable ones. imagine what that must feel like after I left my baby (Bravia). although sacrifices had to be made (in my case), the pain is still there (or annoyance for some of you).

Man, that would be too easy, heh. The short story is, Amazon just fucked up an order... I called the shipping company they use to deliver it to see why the television hadn't arrived by the time they said it would. They said they couldn't locate it so they sent an email to amazon to send a replacement. Amazon, being the geniuses that they are, start the refund process on my money. Well, come to find out, the television arrives late that night but I guess Amazon thought it had been lost/stolen, so probably had insurance cover it after they refunded my money. So, free television. *Shrugs*

After using HDMI, everything else is horrible.
I'm not surprised Sony doesn't officially support any other output than HDMI, it's a bit shocking to see how much other connection types take away.

And yes of course there is a huge difference between 720 and 1080 (unless you are blind) and yes there is also a huge quality difference even in 720p if you are using HDMI or component.

HDMI is king of connections BUT I hear that's not the case on 360 simple because it's not fully built to use HDMI and some report component actually looks better than HDMI on 360.
I haven't heard anyone argue that PS3 with HDMI looks best.

My parents got a 65" Mitsubishi 1080p DLP (http://reviews.cnet.com/projection-tvs/mitsubishi-wd-65831/4505-6484_7-32121615.html) and a 720p projector with 7.1 surround sound last year. In the theater room, Uncharted especially is just god-like. Really no words to describe it. CoD4 was also really good with the surround sound and I found myself jumping sometimes, I could actually feel it in my chest when I got shot from rumbles of the subwoofer. The only problem is my dad won't buy any Blu-Rays because we watched that Ricky Bobby piece of shit that came with the PS3 at launch and now he thinks upscaled DVD quality is about the same as Blu-Ray.

1080p on the Mitsu is so sharp, the difference between it and 720p is really night and day. Even Uncharted, Ratchet, and Warhawk which are 720 native but upscale to 1080 look significantly better. All have no jaggies on a 65" TV and I usually sit pretty close. Man GT5:P can't come soon enough and I still gawk at the Killzone E3 trailer from time to time!

Now if only I could play like that all the time. For some reason my dad likes to make me drag the PS3 back downstairs to play on a CRT that's as old as me even when nobody is using the big screen. Small unreadable text ftl. More than once I've felt the urge to strangle myself with the composite cables I held in my hands lol.

Well the sofas in the family room are about 25 feet from the TV so in a way it was almost necessary to get a TV that big haha and it was pretty cheap for the size, less than a 50" Bravia.

42" 1080p TV, produced by a company called Amoi. Very cheap, great quality.
