View Full Version : Should Link talk?

Well... should he?
Should the Legend of Zelda series have full speech attached like FFX?
I think so. In fact lately I get offended when reading text with no speech.
The technology is available so why no speech?
Nintendo claims that everyone has different perceptions on how Link would sound, I reckon that's a bullshit excuse for saving money on voice actors!
And besides, since each Link is different then each game could have a different Link voice...
Full speech would give the characters so much more personality, rather than the limited grumbles you hear in the Wind Waker.
I know many people prefer no speech at all, I have no idea why.
If Nintendo cared so much about making the Wind Waker like a cartoon then ehy the hell isnt there voice acting? Even Mario had voice acting (although there's a case where there should only have been text! :) )
What's your view?

Oh, by the way this thread is in no way insulting the Wind Waker. As you can tell by my sig/avvie I want the game NOW.

I can't imagine link ever talking. I can't imagine any Nintendo characters talking in a video game. But in the case of windwaker, there's too much text, too many characters - it would be nearly impossible to add voice to them all. Then there's the challenge of adding voice to a character and still be able to connect the gamer and character. Link's personality should reflect your own, and a voice may ruin that. But above all is the cost, which is tremendous.

I dunno if link should talk but the other characters would be okay by me. Link shouldn't really talk because in the game it makes it feel like YOU are link...like Metroid Prime; not having a personality/voice makes it feel like your the one doing everything.
I remember reading a magazine artical where they interviewed someone who makes RPGs, and he said that most main characters don't get a voice for an artistic reason. They want you to react to what people in the game tell you, and if the character had his/her own personality it would make you feel more disconnected with the game.

As for Link talking well the characters can talk but I don't think Link should. He can be like Crono. Plus when you get annoyed reading with eyes is faster than listening. If they do give him a voice I want it to be innocent sounding in a way. Like the voices for Goku (child), Gohan (child), Trunks (child), or Goten from the DB series.

if there was speech, how would they say those bold and different colored words?

i think the full cast should talk, except for link.it would give link the air of mysteriousness as well as breathing a new life into the legend(as if it needs it)

No way, Link should be kept as the silent type.

They could make everyone in the game talk except Link. In Mario Sunshine, mario talked some but it was mostly like grunts and MAMA MIA!!'s. he never really got in to a conversation like the other characters.

I think it would ruin the game once they added voices to it.

You just answered your own question...
Kinda...
What if it ruins it?
I say nay... nay I say.

It should...in some cases. Like in Mario 64, when Mario grabs Bowser, he talks. I say Link should talk when he is fighting important enemies.

Yeah... a "Come on!" or a "Ha HA!!" now and then would be cool.

No, I don't think Link should talk. Zelda is fine just the way it is. Maybe on the next Nintendo system, they should step it up, but, for games like Wind Waker, it's best not to have voice, imo.

voice acting is a wonderful thing, if done correctly. Now, with so many people found of Link, each with their own interpritation of his voice. You may think, wow this is nice. and another might thing, damn he sounds like shit. I would say, leave voice acting out simply because, I don't want to see Link sounding fuuny or any of that.

if anything just grunts and one word phrases.
Yes or no, depending on how Nintendo implemented it. Now if they did it right, Link with voice acting could be a damn sexy thing. If done wrong, it could hurt the franchise overall.

That's what I'm saying...they've got to be extra careful if they do add voices to the next Zelda game.

Okay it seems most people here think that Link talking is a no go. But it seems you wouldnt mind the other characters talking a bit.
How about we have full speech during snazzy FMV sequences and text everywhere else?
I agree there's too much text for full speech but then again MOST characters (even the meaningless ones) in FFX talk.

nintendo should make a microphone and you would have to say every word in the wind waker, so link sounds just like you!
btw, i was kidding

I think they should put modes like in Animal Crossing, Silent or Talking

I wouldn't mind voices for all the characters in Zelda except for Link, Ganon and Zelda, I don't think that these three should ever be given voices beyond their screams, grunts, and other various noises. Its more personalized if you imagine the voice for yourself. And it is true that everybody has a different perception of what their voices would be like. Link hardly ever has any text as it is, I always just assumed that what he said was left up to the player, and I like it that way.

I don't know.. its hard to think of in my mind. But I do know that if he sounds different than what I expect, I tend to get angry.

I think Nintendo would do a good job with Link's voice if they evr decided to do voice acting. In OOT when Adult link swung his sword he didnt sound bad at all. That proves to me that Nintendo could satisfy us with a good voice for Link. Just let them use that voice or one like it. Its not a big deal to me, I don't picture myseld as Link when I play the game, I even name him Link instead of my own name.

Now that I think of it I can't think of how Link would sound. His screams, and grunts can't really tell me how he would sound. I wouldn't mind Link saying short things like: "To battle and victory!" "Uh-Oh" "Oops" "Yikes" "Ow" "wow" "I need rest" "I'm injured" Things like that.

I think Link with full speech would ruin the Zelda series.Although I'm up for minimal speech meaning I don't think it would hurt for Link to say things like 'take that!!!' or 'victory', something like that.

I would seriously love to hear him chuckle after kicking some ass... hehe...
And have a little animation to go along with it.

If Mario and Link were just now being released for the first time ever, I would expect them to do all kinds of talking, but they have been around for many years without speaking, especially silent Link, and it wouldn't seem right for them to suddenly start speaking now. I wouldn't want to see Link communicate the way Mario did in Super Mario RPG, but it worked great for Mario and I found it somewhat humorous. (Spelling?)

I think the Zelda series should go into a kinda moderen world..with a bunch of peole, and the game asks u if u want speech or not.

The way Mario communicated in Mario RPG was absolutely hideous! I hated that game, it made Mario look like a tool.

A Very Sharp and resounding "NO".

Exactly Link does what you do. He sounds how you want him to sound. He acts as you act. When you play a Zelda game you "become" link, not just play him....

yea i agree with some others when they say link should stay mute and have the other characters in the game talk. i pretty much talk for link so i wouldnt like for him to cut me off while im trying to answer the questions. yep i am into my games. fully.
