View Full Version : PS3 as External HD?

Wasn't sure where to put this question, tech seemed best.
My computer had picked up the nasty habit of restarting itself whenever it damn well pleases. As I have no idea why this is happening, I've decided to reformat the thing. And as my trusty thumbdrive is only 1GB large, I was wondering if it was possible to stow my files on the PS3's HD while I reformat the computer.

Well, the PS3's filesystem is encrypted so you would need to partition the drive to form an unencrypted partition. But you can only do this in the first place with the PS3 as the partition probably won't be able to be resized with any third party app. As the ps3 encrypts any file system it creates, the answer is an almost certain no.
why don't we try to fix the problem first?
go to control panel > administrative tools > and click on the options and have a look around for the checkbox to not automatically restart the computer when a fatal error occurs. I don't use windows so can't remember the exact location of this checkbox, perhaps someone else can help?
With this checkbox set up to not restart the computer when an error occurs, you should receive a blue screen instead of your computer restarting. Please tell me the error code on this blue screen.

It's under System properties > advanced > startup and recovery. I'll write down the error code when it happens again. Thanks. In the meantime, music and video are being evacuated to the PS3.

LOL, evacuated.
I can just imagine all the ones and zeros running across the USB bus to the PS3 safe zone. Reminds me of 28 weeks later.

lol, I know, although I hated that movie, especially in comparison to 28 Days Later.
It seems that, after turning off the restart setting, my computer has regained its composure. I'll keep in mind to write down the code if it ever does bluescreen but it hasn't after several hours of sustained use.

I find that having Windows installed on a separate smaller partition is great. I have a 30 GB partition for Windows Vista, and a 200 GB section for storing files like movies or other stuff.
Anytime there is a massive problem I can just reformat the single partition and I don't lose any of my other files.
Maybe you should try something like this to be safe for the future?

That's basically what one does with Ubuntu as well, installing the OS on one partition and keeping your home folder and data on another.

I have windows XP.
This computer couldn't run Vista if it tried

Well you can partition like that with any OS.
You just have a separate one for data and a separate one to install your OS and programs on.
That way if there's problems you can just quickly fix everything without losing all your stuff :)
It definitely works with XP :)

Yes, you can do that with XP however, XP/Vista is not very good at recognizing changes in the second partition, and as such it doesn't particularly enjoy cross-partition pollination. But it certainly is safer. Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is no way to mount the documents and settings folder on a different partition.
@seph, nice bit of marketing there :)

^I just back up my documents and settings data onto a USB.
Generally all I keep in there is pictures and pdf files, so a 512 MB USB backs up all my important data.
I store program setup files on the second partition so I can have them right after I do a reinstall of Windows. My emulators run entirely on my second partition....
Then the only thing I have to install are the programs I own on CDs and DVDs. And Warcraft :P
Basically I lose absolutely nothing when I fresh install Windows now. I'm very satisfied XD
I really think a lot of people should start doing this. The computer world is evil. I have no idea why they don't tell people about this to avoid so much wastage of people's lives!
Computer's business is EVIL! EVILLLL!!!

Well, the idea is, that if you have to reformat a computer you bought from an OEM you would need to buy the windows license because they don't ship the discs, and you would have to manually buy all the anti-viral crap and all the other shitware OEM's load onto PC's that customers get used to.

finally bluescreened. Relevant infos:
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: MA111nd5.sys
Tech Info
STOP: 0x000000BE (0xEF240A85, 0X113cc121, 0xEE282BFC, 0x000000A)
MA111nd5.sys - address EDBEFEC4 base at EDBE2000, date stamp 403bfe87
I notice on the side of my desktop's USB wireless adapter it also says MA111. Can this whole thing be solved by either downloading a new driver or getting a new adapter?
Garfunkel
03-28-2008, 05:10 AM
Yes, it's a driver conflict with a USB wireless adapter.
Go to the device manager, click on your usb adapter and click uninstall driver.
restart
Then download a new driver from the internet, i found one here:
http://www.runscanner.net/files/sys/ma111nd5/ma111nd5.sys.aspx
But here is the official site:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/inquira/default.asp?question_box=driver&collections=kb_file%2Cdatasheets&ui_mode=question&collection_restriction=kb_file
and install it and restart again.
Hopefully you shouldn't have any more issues.

I appreciate the help, however the first link merely invites me to download another program called driver agent and the official site doesn't offer any driver downloads for MA111.
In fact I installed driver agent, a firefox plugin, and it says the MA111 driver is fine. If I try to do anything else it attempts to charge me $30 ><

lol, ignore that first link then, kill it, i didn't really know what it was, anyway, i'll search for it on the official website.
edit: it's located here but there are two different versions, you need to check which one you have. But I'm guessing you are using v1
