View Full Version : Wii = 25 million, now 30 million
Viper

It took only 18 months for Wii to hit 25 million worldwide sales. This is 20 weeks faster than the DS and an amazing 30 weeks faster than the PS2.
To make it even more dominant, it crossed the marker during the same week that GTAIV hit the HD consoles. US hardware sales for the week are as follows:
Wii - 398,710
DS - 154,044
PS3 - 145,196
X360 - 119,345
PSP - 83,414
The Wii managed to outsell both HD consoles combined despite the launch of what is now considered the highest rated game of all time....GTAIV.
Even if you don't like the Wii, you can't help but marvel at Nintendo's turnaround and incredible success the Wii has managed thus far.

Well said Neo. Well said.
This truly is remarkable. For all the quips about a slow-down and the initial ideas that this console would take 3rd place, and be far back as well. Man, were people wrong.
I havent had alot of time to play my Wii, let alone any game, but this summer i plan on catching up on quite a bit of games and im pretty happy with my purchase right now. I just wish i made time to enjoy the console more, as it has enough games to keep me entertained but i just havent been consistent in my use of time on the console. I havent touched the damn thing in over 3 months. That is pretty shameful with all the awesome games that have been released, but i will start playing games again soon.
Part of the reason i havent played as much is because of this site as well, though my posting per day has decreased HERE, it has increased on many other forums. :|
Okay, enough about me. Back to the Wii. Great success and just jaw dropping numbers. It truly is impressive that with the release of GTAIV it still outsold both consoles combined.
I just cant imagine the look on people's faces when they still cant easily get a Wii in stores.

All 3 home consoles have had great year over year growth (yeah, that includes X360) and records sales and profits (ok, as a whole industry) all which flies in the face of our supposed recession in the US and other global turmoil.

Which makes you wonder. Is part of the reason the economy is so poor because everyone is in their living rooms playing games?
Viper
05-09-2008, 07:47 PM
Hehe, no.
Our economy is poor because our government borrows the money from a private company (The Federal Reserve) who charge them interest. The government pays that interest by taxing us (the Federal income Tax). The messed up part, it stimulate the economy, fight wars, etc...they borrow more money from the Federal Reserve and the cycle continues.
When more physical money is put in circulation, the value drops. Just like any item of value, the more there are, the less it's valued and that's why our economy is lagging behind.
<3frosty
05-09-2008, 07:54 PM
The War in Iraq has certainly put a strain on our economy. The amount of money we are using to fight there is unreal. And our troop losses have only escalated since we declared "victory" there. :|
Viper
05-09-2008, 08:01 PM
To be honest, the war itself is a boon to the economy (a sad fact that is historically associated with war). The problem is how they are funding it. The government keeps borrowing more money from the Fed and by doing so devaluing the dollar and putting us more debt (we owe the Federal Reserve about 9 trillion in interest).
We're way off track but check the World Affairs board for more details.

2. I am actually very suprised by the turnaround. I totally should've bought stock in Nintendo before the Wii launched. It was only like 80 dollars a share a ways back and now it's like 300+

And......30 million.
It's now just 2 million shy of the N64 which is should pass in just 6-7weeks.
The 30 million marker has been crossed by the following consoles (Time in weeks from initial sales launch).
Wii - 88 weeks
GBA - 102 weeks
DS - 106 weeks
SNES - 120 weeks
PS2 - 127 weeks
PSP - 160 weeks
N64 - 210 weeks
PS - ?
GB - ?
NES - ?
Gen - ?
Here is the total sales through the first 88 weeks for last gen consoles. Keep in mind launch dates for the PS2 were staggered (it was Japan only for several months).
PS2 - 15 million
Xbox - 9 million
GC - 8 million

Yah, first to 30 million wins. That means it's just outsold Atari VCS. Half way to outselling NES.
Hopefully they'll take a couple of their big sacks of money and make me Super Mario Galaxy 2.

GTA IV is a supremely terrible game and it deserves barely any of the recognition or sales it gets.
But that aside, congratulations to the Wii. I gotta buy one (again) and actually open it this time (>.>) and play all the Super Mario Galaxy and whatnot... I really should be playing it right now and waggling my damn motion control stuff.
It's really not cool... and it's such a pansy reason why it got returned... it's so pansy I doubt anyone could imagine or guess it or whatever.
I hope the next Nintendo better add the Super prefix again.

I personally don't think it would even be an issue. Any 'harhar!' illustrious comments about the name really died off only months after the name was officially announced. No one cares anymore, the jokes aren't funny after even half as long as it's been since inception.
Super Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Super Wii

yeah well that was because Nintendo hired Sony to produce a CD drive for the Snes called Play Station, but Nintendo reneged on the deal and left Sony in the lurch, so Sony built a games machine around that drive and called it Playstation 1. that's why Sony don't trust Nintendo and Nintendo hate Sony...

Cliff, might want to take what Apple said as fact. As the contract was that Sony wrote up, the name on the console, the games, the packaging, the start up screen, etc...would be Sony instead of Nintendo and all game royalties would go to Sony instead of Nintendo. It would basically limit Nintendo to the status of in house developer.
All Nintendo wanted was for them to create a disc drive for them like Matsushita (Panasonic) did for the GC.
I'll grant licked their wounds and carried on but would you have signed it if you were Nintendo?

Somewhere around there.
Then it was supposed to die when Halo 3 came out.
Then it was supposed to die at the start of 2008.
Then it was supposed to die when Blu Ray beats HD DVD.
Then it was supposed to die when DMC4 came out.
Then it was supposed to die when GTAIV came out.
Then it was supposed to die when MGS4 came out.
Now it's supposed to die when Resistance 2, no Banjo Kazooie, no KillZone 2, no FFX111 comes out.
Lately though, I've been hearing about how things will be different "next gen" when Sony and MS will crush Nintendo....so the "fad will die" date seems to keep getting pushed back all the time.
Now they're trying to say it's like Disco. Disco is considered a fad despite lasting a decade. It makes the 'fanboys'* sleep better at night, I guess.

Casuals are soaking this thing up like a freakin Ipod, I turn on my Wii once a month! For many gamers--Wii/Nintendo is just a bit disappointing after the initial phase of motion control where's off.
I'm honestly not bashing here, Wii sales are a testament to how Nintendo is creating a nice new market, and getting new gamers. But Wii is definitely not revolutionary like Nintendo hyped it up to be. It's something new, it's different, it's fresh and fun for a lot of people just starting, or getting back into gaming, but lets not equate Wii's sales with="Awesomeness Ownage console". I've bought it twice now, and it's definitely a fad to me.
There's fanboys on all sides of the fence. And there are many who will hype Wii beyond belief because its the new "in" thing. Bring it home, and go
For the record, I love my Smash brothers and Wii sports, and plan to get Mario galaxy soon. Just had to throw that out there, because I think there's more than a few people that bought into the hype of Wii, and still left a bit burned by it. There's like 3 games a year that actually require some type of gamers skill to complete and not casual/party experiences. That's just ridiculous...
PS3 got a TERRIBLE amount of flack when it debuted, and right now IMO, I think it's lighting up the gaming scene more than any platform...without motion control. Kudos for Ninty, maybe next time they can make a console that at least tries to satisfy more than just the casual market.
That's been in a bunch of Sony's PR stuff, "something for everyone," or "diversity" and all that other crap. I'm just not feeling that with Wii, like at all..and by the time it changes, I won't even care anymore:shrug:

some people are going to be looking at more games while others will look at less. Wii doesnt suit all gamers but that doesnt mean it's not a console for gamers. it's all up to individual perferences. when people say "Wii isnt for gamers" what they are really saying is "you're not a gamer unless you play games with a certain style". it's a load of BS. those people need to either; be more open to other styles of games; or accept that it's not the console for them and get back to playing their console of preference. just cut out the "Wii is a fad" crap.

So it's a fad just because it isn't "your" thing? Tell me something, does that make anything that isn't in your interest perspective a fad?
Are you representative of all the core gamers out there? Does your interest in the console take superiority over that of millions who enjoy the console...casual and core?
Hell, I'm a core gamer yet I enjoy the console greatly. And I'm not alone. There are millions of core gamers who enjoy Wii and the software sales prove it. If it were all casuals, the software charts would look vastly different.
The only fad are uninterested gamers calling it a fad.
Sounds like you bought into the Nintendo PR too much at first and as a retaliation you're now buying into the exact opposite load of BS to compensate.
PS: If all you've found is an average of 3 games per year to work on, you're not looking hard enough. if you want to take a more agnostic approach to the Wii later on, I can list you some games you'd like based on what you've already played and enjoyed.
Well, it doesn't really count if it never left the drawing board. (though neither did rev or ultra, though they were officially announced at least)
No, I mean the name itself was actually trademarked. Far beyond just being the internal code name like Revolution, Ultra 64, Katana, Dolphin, Nitro, Black Belt, Dural, Project Reality, etc...this was trademarked and copywritten.
The question is, can you come up with a list like that coming in the next year? PS3 and 360 can. That is why many Wii owners are dissapointed.
Quite easily actually and it's grown by 5 titles just in the past 2 weeks. The problem is perception. Too many gamers only perceive the casual games because they get the most coverage (especially when comapred to the games industry as a whole) but there are just as many core gamers targeted titles on the way (and according to EA, Sega and some others recently...a whole lot more as they start shifting development focus).

lol...ok, I agree calling it a fad is simply bashing, but still, I've just got burned by Wii too much to have respect for it.
The reason I have to flame a little bit here, is I'm just running out of reasons to play Wii--and that's just disappointing to me.
@Viper, I'm not saying core gamers aren't interesting in Wii, but I am saying they are most definitely 2nd place with Wii's current lineup. Wii hardly impresses as much as my PS3 graphically--which I don't mind at all. Because of that though, I just figured there would be wave upon wave of AAA games coming out for Wii (RPG love anyone?!) and IMO that's not here yet.
At first that was fine, i used my Wii for pick up and play titles and party games. Even that aspect is not all that interesting to me anymore because of PSN. I think it's a fair argument that PSN's original games have been spitting out quality titles for both pick-up and play or hour long sessions. So again, now I use my Wii even less.
I'm open to all types of gameplay fellas--I bought freakin flow for crying out loud:huh: And yes, there are some gems I'm gonna pick up. Battalion Wars, Mario Galaxy, Mario Cart, Elebits, and maybe some more Wii sports/music titles.
I have to kind of apologize here, because after reading my post, I definitely come off as raining down on a parade. Sometimes I just like to be on the opposite side of the spectrum, it's a bad habit;)
Still, Wii sucks for me sometimes, I haven't been shopping for it in a while so we'll see how that changes throughout the rest of the year. PS3 sucked when I first got it as well:shrug:
Tks for the list fellas. a few interesting things to look at. But Zelda TW was my first Wii game, and to me it was just boring. It was like Ocarina of time without the magic and amazing graphics to impress you with. DIdn't like that one at all, especially because Ocarina was so...soo...good:pleased:
ok...I enjoyed this discussion! Now someone start a thread on X360--I'll rip that console apart!!!! Freakin MS has done nothing but split more games up this gen across two different platforms! Hopefully Gears 2 is the last MS exclusive, I'm totally gay for Gears!
But man, X360 is a poo-poo for the industry...

Well with Wii its growing on me more because Microsoft just hacked me off so much with that E3 press conference, the plan became very clear "Copy, buy off, or neutralize every single one of Playstation 2s franchises". You just think man... Where's the innovation if that's your plan?
With Wii everything they do is original, they plow their own path. They don't copy 360, even though you'd have thought they might have copied achievements, etc. They don't copy PS3, they go their own way. I have total respect for that.
This whole system war "We must destroy Playstation" vibe off Microsoft and it's followers is so uncool. I have a 360, and probably spent a lot more money on it than a lot of the more fanatical types you see on forums, but not anymore. Very hacked off. So maybe I'll take all that money I was going to spend on 360 and spend it on that neglected Wii. Mario Kart Wii you say? Lots of light gun games. Hell why not. Maybe I don't want to give money to Microsoft to destroy my favorite console brand. Maybe I'll give it to Nintendo who will compete by trying to out smart and out game Sony, not outspend them.
No more "proudly PS360" for me, think I'll go "PSWii".

Still, Wii sucks for me sometimes, I haven't been shopping for it in a while so we'll see how that changes throughout the rest of the year. PS3 sucked when I first got it as well:shrug:
An unfortunate circumstance that plagued the PS3 at first....wait.
Wii's initial hype was all potential (much like the PS3's initial hype) but unfortunately every major 3rd party publisher wrote off the Wii instantly and focused all their major efforts on the X360 and PS3 by association.
We didn't get much at first aside from low budget titles and some ports because 3rd parties were unprepared for Wii.
We're jut now seeing (and hearing according to many publishers) a big shift towards Wii. Capcom bringing Dead Rising should say a lot considering it will be the first HD title brought over to Wii that wasn't initially planned for Wii. That means Capcom had to reallocate millions to Wii they originally had planned for something else on the HD consoles.
The porting over of the COD4 engine, the emergence of High Voltage Software, Codemasters GRiD engine and more all suggest these companies are shifting their long term plans to include Wii now that's it's completely crushed publisher expectations.
Our industry is slow to react because of how long development takes and the limited funds available because of increased costs. Wii was shunned early and that's lead to this lack of killer software. The good news is we see many signs of change as well as publishers themselves publicly saying, "Oops, we initially fucked up on Wii."
So you sold your Wii because interest waned. I can see how gamers with certain favorite genres would go that route for now but we know that's all changing.
The Wii filled the Blue Ocean void of casual oriented games but because of the lack of 3rd party support for the core end, a blue ocean within a blue ocean now exists. With over 30 million sold and increasing (core and casual audience) a huge potential is sitting there for the core 3rd party taking.
Keep an eye on it. It might grab your interest again soon.

Supposedly the next Zelda, which is already deep in development, will be a departure from the tried and true we've all come to love and somewhat hate. However, it won't be a cartoonish affair like Wind Waker or a limited input outing like Phantom Hourglass.
We're all hoping for the same or darker style but with some new directions and themes.
