So Metal Gear Solid 4 is just around the corner and over at the MGS4 thread many posters talked about playing through or replaying the previous MGS games before the release of MGS4. So here it is:
The Metal Gear Solid Retrospective thread.
We will work though each game a week at a time in chronological order. Begining with MGS3 and finishing with MGS2 right before we all enjoy MGS4.
the game dates are as follows.
MGS3: May 10th
MGS Portable Ops: May 17th Also if you have MG1 and MG2 play them in this week.
MGS: May 24th
MGS2: May 31st
This gives us a week to talk about each game in question, the topics and themes in each game, the questions raised that could be answered in MGS4, the characters, the bloodlines, the timeline, the tie-ins with real world events. Everything will be discussed. Not only by the MGS veterans of PSI but the rookies aswell. Hopeuflly this thread will get those not very familiar with the history of MGS up to date and ready for June 12th.
But there are a few rules that i (and a few others) ask you to follow:
1: No mention what so ever of anything related to MGS4: Bosses, articles, trailers, rumors or anything of the sort. Not even posted in a spoiler tag, this is a complete MGS4 free zone. Some members including myself have avoided the MGS4 thread for fear of spoilers this close to release.
2: Try and keep the thread on topic and sensible. Those who Don't wish to input to the overall topic in such a way i beg of you please dont try and derail the thread with unrelated posts.
3: Have fun diving deep into the world Kojima created for us. =D

Some members including myself have avoided the MGS4 thread for fear of spoilers this close to release. That said mentioning MGS4 is allowed in some instances. Damn, this sounds like a great Idea. I haven't beat any of the MGS games again in quite some time.
I will definitely check back in the portable ops topics since I haven't played that particular game (I played both Acids though). I really wanted to know how it's story related to the overall MGS plotline.
Sephiroth_VII

It's VERY related. The ACiD's are completely uncanonish though.

The Acid games on PSP were related to the main story?
My question about Big Boss is why he decided to become a bad guy in the first place. I played through Portable Ops and it ended with Ocelot saying he wanted to have Big Boss (Naked Snake) to be apart of their operation. Why did he choose to defect? What drove his choice? I understood that there were a lot of things going on within Foxhound that he was unaware of, but I didn't understand overall what happened.

**Spoiler for MGS3
Well the US Government pretty much screwed over The Boss and Big Boss. The Boss joined Volgin to stop him from taking the Shagohad and firing a nuke at US and get the philosopher's legacy. However Volgin got trigger happy with one of the nukes that The Boss gave him and then Russia government connected the nuke to the US government and they blamed The Boss saying she defected. They sent in Big Boss to kill her to prove US innocence and she is seen as a traitor by the public instead of the patriot that she was.

MGS3 really introduced a such a sad story. It only took the last few minutes of the game to make such an emotional impact too.

I already played through them both before starting on MGS3 but i'll play them again during MGPo week.

AH - I still need to play portable ops.
I got MGS1 when it came out and only completed it last year or the year before because of damaged disks (long story).
I completed MGS1 so quick. I played an hour a day for 4 days. Got up to Mantis, then played the rest of the game in 1 sitting on the friday. Nobody disturbed me the whole day until I got to the final cutscene - incidentally my ps2 also crashed before i got my foxhound code thing. It just faded out from the cut scene and sat there.
My friend then lent me MGS2 and I played that through on hard as with MGS3.
I thought number 1 was best for action and cuts scenes and everything.
Number 2 was best for the insane plot. Totally loved that.
Number 3 -> was the hardest -> it was the most down to earth but it was the one that really confused me as far as the plot goes.
didn't know where to post this, so I'll put it here:
I've taken this today at uni;

Sadly, German license plates usually don't lend themselves for cool words (as the "Kreis" is always present... my plate was "BB-RS-1504" (BB for Böblingen, were I reside, RS for my name and 1504 as it is my birthday)
I am getting release fever also... I also stooped to the level of actually reading stuff at GAF, as I was starving on ANY information I could get my hands on (beside spoilers of course).
I'll play MGS3 some more :D I search every nook and cranny now, to prolong my experience until 6/12 :D

one thing I never understood reading those documents. what the hell does the one involving a writer putting peanut better over everything (even bubble gum!) fit in the MGS universe? who is he and what happened to him?
solidsnakejej
05-28-2008, 06:44 AM
He was given a disk by an unknown person (probably Nastasha) who I guess wanted somebody with enough guts to investigate an incident like Shadow Moses and write a book about what he learned. In the publisher notes it says he vanished into thin air. I wonder if he'll show up in some form in MGS4.

One of yes.
The best video game trailer, hell even movie trailer is the 15 min MGS4 trailer. It's fucking amazing..
MGS has ALWAYS had the best trailers and shoiwng in EVERY freakin E3 since 2000 with the epic MGS2 (which is the highest scoring MGS game on metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sort=relevance&termType=all&ts=metal+gear+solid&ty=3&x=18&y=5)).
back to the mystery guy: so did he investigate after MGS2 story ended or what? I remember reading a +400 page story and loving it, and there was a shorter story. but I didn't quite understand the actual role of the writer and where he stood in the universe. could he be Otacon by any chance?

first off :P Mystery guy = Gary McGolden
His obsession with peanut butter isnt really relevant to the MGS universe its just an idiosyncrasy. His investigation took place in 2007 so it happened before MGS2 takes place. His role isnt very clear because he's not really a huge figure at this point. I have a feeling we'll see or hear about him in MGS4 though. He originally got the disc from a former publishing friend Max Smithson (or at least thats what the envelope said) after cracking the code on it he found and read Nastashas book. Wanting to know more about it and hopgin to find the truth behid it all he went to shadow moses (still in 2007) where he got captured by the Patriots and then rescued by Solid Snake. After this he vanished, we dont know if he's been killed or just laying low trying to hide from the patriots. I'm hoping this will be answered in MGS4.
Hoping that clears things up for you Z
that clears up a lot thanks. you have to know it's been 8 years since I read that, and I only read it once, so you have to forgive my sloppy memory. lol
so what do you mean captured by the Patriots and recruited by Solid Snake? isn't there a gap? did he escape from the Patriots first or what?
I know this part of the universe isn't really that important. I just feel I have to know every little detail about everything concerning MGS. ;p
Passive
05-30-2008, 04:56 PM
haha thats cool, its been a while since i read it too. And he was rescued by snake, not recruited (guessing you read the word wrong). At least we don't know if snake welcomed him to Philanthropy after saving him from the Patriots, as there was no mention of him in MGS2 and he's still MIA.
And i'm not so sure about it not being important. Gary pissed the Patriots off pretty good by releasing information about Shadow Moses. He clearly has ties to Nastasha who is also in hiding from the Patriots. I'm guessing (more like hoping) both will get a mention or even a slight appearance in MGS4.

But as far as planns go, im going to the EB midnight launch, the doors open at 10 and festivities ensue, when i grab my cop at 12 im trotting off home, opening up my LE putting in the game and while it's installing im gonna take shots of the LEW contents and have a good look at everything inside, post pic on here =D and then grab me a nice cup of tea and sitting down, locking my door and playing MGS4 all in one sitting :D :D :D

Dressing up as a character from anything is way to extreme for me. Also, waiting in line is also too extreme for me.
I mean, I love video games and all, but I don't pre-order games (unless there is a good incentive to do so), I don't dress up as characters, and most of all, I don't wait in lines. I figure I can always get the game later. It isn't like it is gonna never be avalible for me to buy again. I will probably pick it up during the afternoon, after all the crazy launch people are gone...
me cosplaying as vamp:

I will buy a lot of junk food- a LOT, close my room door, shut off my mobile, and turn on my hermit-mode to the max. nobody will see me for days! and when I come back to society and everybody asks me where I've been, I'll snicker and say; "HEAVEN! THAT IS OUTER HEAVEN TO YOU!"

I'm not bleaching my hair. That's just aweful. No one else will get it (you know, at work), and I'll have to wait for it to grow out (too fucking long). But I do plan to just hit up the thrift store for some camo pants and a blazer. I'm not going cosplay levels of fidelity here, cuz he's got piercings and...all kinds of little knick knacks on 'em. just avoid any MGS4 character all together. I regret posting that altered old one. you can use previous MGS art alll you want. :)
here is something I will do;since I only payed half price for the game ($60- yes, that's half price for us, and by 'us' I mean everyone that doesn't live in North America) I have to wait about 10 days for it to ship from overseas.
what I'll do is that immediately after launch, I will refrain from the internet since idiots will have spoilers in thread titles. sig and avy pics and what not. in the meantime, I can catch up on all the games I bought and are just sitting their collecting dust since I have to much homework!
a piece of advice; there will be screens and vids of the title screen, theme song, first 10 minutes of gameplay and other shit like that; don't touch it! the less you know, the more you'll enjoy it!

OK, it gets too risky so close to release, so I'm leaving already.
I'll leave this board for about three weeks, or at least until I finish MGS4. I already let the staff know through the private staff board, so I guess I just have to let you all know through here.
Because I've been so active in these forums and I've been visiting other boards and gaming sites, I was bound to encounter things I didn't want to see or know. I'm way too afraid of spoilers as I've successfully managed to keep myself isolated from MGS4 info, trailers and screenshots for about 10 months now and it's a matter of time the ending leaks and/or a troll comes here and ruins it for everyone. There's just too much risk, so I'm leaving temporarily. It's the only way for maximum excitement and enjoyment. I know, I did the same for MGS3 and it allowed me to experience it best.
My advice to anyone who's undecided about whether wanting to keep finding out more before the game is out, I'll just say that you can rest assured someone, no matter who, will somehow ruin important plot twists or resolutions before you can play the game. You'll feel terrible just for not avoiding at least the MGS4 thread a week before you play it.
Once I finish MGS4, I'll be back to my moderator duties. In the meantime, just take care of the bad thread titles and random idiots for me, will you, mod pals? :cowboy:

PSP analogue nub was okay I thought.
Only after long pays would it get annoying but then the same could be said about the battery side burning my fingers.
I've played a bit of MGS: PO and to be honest it didn't feel like MGS that much due to it's stage by stage mechanics.
Still great though however before I could finish it, my PSP got stolen and I never bothered to save up for another.

Computer and Videogames.com review
9.5
As MGS's biggest fans, if we owe the series anything, it's unburdening it from the weight of expectation and our own hype. Nothing, nothing, would make us happier than being told we're wrong - in fact, we're resenting our gut reaction as we type, and keen to finish it again despite all our minor grievances - but either way, it's a journey we implore every gamer to take, regardless of their feelings for the series - because while the destination won't be to everyone's taste, the route is paved with gold. Damn. Now we're sad.
I won't link it cuz it was borderline almost spoilery in some parts.

Hideo Kojima Makes Guinness Records
Gaming legend officially recognized by Guinness.
Famed record-trackers Guinness watched our pocket of society more closely for the 2008 Gamer's Edition of their World Records Book. The company has slyly chosen to talk up these new gaming-centric records near the release of new high-profile games. A few weeks ago we saw them keeping a close eye on Grand Theft Auto IV, and now, with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots cresting over the horizon, they've presented new records to series mastermind Hideo Kojima.
The company has sent word that Kojima was in London earlier this week to receive his Guinness World Record certificates, including awards for the following records:
* First videogame to fully utilize stealth (Metal Gear)
* Biggest selling stealth game on PlayStation 2 (Metal Gear Solid 2
The company notes that while earlier games used stealth elements, Metal Gear was the first game to use this as the backbone of the gameplay. Keith Pullin, editor of the Gamer's Edition of the World Records Book, presented Kojima with his certificates, stating the company "hopes he breaks many more." With MGS4's hype building to critical mass, that day could come pretty soon.

Looks like the NDA is not as bad as it has been made out to be:
There seems to be two discussions going on about Metal Gear Solid 4. One is about the game's actual reviews, and the other is about actually reviewing the game. Rumors swirled that reviewers weren't able to talk about MGS4 cutscenes and installs — rumors that were later confirmed in IGN UK's MGS4 review and by EGM's decision not to review the game. Konami and Kojima Productions were taken to task for this highly unusual NDA. But what was in this NDA? Kojima Productions' Assistant Producer Ryan Payton contacted Kotaku in hopes of setting the record straight and coming clean.
About those review limitations, Payton says the NDA covered: Install times, length of cutscenes (the ending in particular), number of environments, opening "movie", product placement and a half dozen story-specific items. Payton gets down to specifics, stating, "The game requires an eight minute install, as well as a number of two to three-minute installs between acts." But what about the cutscenes? The rationale, according to Payton, was that they wanted reviewers to refrain from describing which cutscenes were long as it would "ruin" the experience if players knew when a cutscene was unfolding. What's more, Payton adds, "I want to make it clear that, from today, reviewers are welcome to discuss the length of the cutscenes and install times, but we ask that they not get too specific about the cinematic times and what happens in later install sequences..." Hit the jump for Payton's email in full.
Hey Brian,
Believe it or not, I've been so busy working on a special surprise for MGS4 buyers (that not even those who have leaked copies of the game can spoil! Haha!), that I haven't had time to catch up on most of the pre-launch excitement.
Scanning the net today, I came across that 90-minute cutscene rumor, and a red-faced Adam Sessler, who was obviously very upset about the restrictions placed on MGS4 reviews.
Adam asks at the end of his Soapbox clip if he was rambling. On the contrary, I think he voiced some really important concerns about the restrictions placed on MGS4 reviewers.
In light of this, I took a look at the list of restrictions and found that some items are outdated and require more explanation.
We asked reviewers to avoid the following topics:
-Install times
-Length of cutscenes (the ending in particular)
-Number of environments
-Opening "movie"
-Product placement
-(Plus a half dozen story-specific items)
The game requires an eight minute install, as well as a number of two to three-minute installs between acts.
As for the cutscenes, reviewers are more than happy to comment on whether they're too long or short. We simply want reviewers to refrain from describing which scenes are long, thus spoiling some of the experience because players will know what to expect when a scene is unfolding.
I want to make it clear that, from today, reviewers are welcome to discuss the length of the cutscenes and install times, but we ask that they not get too specific about the cinematic times and what happens in later install sequences...
But as for the next three items, we are still asking reviewers to avoid these topics. We want the opening to be a huge surprise for gamers, and knowing how many environments there are in the game, obviously, is a spoiler. These restrictions will remain in place.
Finally, we've asked reviewers to not write about some of the product placement because of some contractual agreements we have with third parties.
I hope this helps clear up some of the controversy.
As a former writer, I'm proud of the discussion this topic has sparked. I hope Adam, Patrick Klepek, and everybody else who covered this issue continue to be diligent about restrictions placed on media outlets. (That's honestly why I'm such a fan of Kotaku — it keeps publishers on their toes.)
I do, however, hope gamers can appreciate the efforts we go through to keep them protected from reviewers that could spoil some of the MGS4 experience.

EDIT: Upon closer inspection, I'm there at 0:10, but only as a very blurry figure being skipped past. I was right at the front of the line, wearing a white raincoat and standing just behind the guy with the red t-shirt.
