TV Channels coming to the PS3?

We have all heard of a PSN movie service in the works. But never anything about TV shows. Until now.

If you watch closely on the PS Store downloadable video “What You Need” you can see an image of a listing of TV channels. Some of the channels that can be seen are as follows:

HBO, NBC, Discovery Channel, Cartoon Network, CBS, and MTV.

It'll be 2011 before UK sees this but excellent features from Sony.

I just wish they were a bit quicker in delivering them.

They'd either have to charge you or load it balls to the walls with ads. Cable networks work on a specific pay scale so I can't imagine how they'd be able to offer this for free.

I like the idea of another outlet which to receive cable networks from (cableTV or satellite being the main options) though. I do have to wonder how many have PSN but no cable or satellite?

Obviously they would have to charge for this, or overload it with ads.

Sony can't provide stuff like this for free.

Haven't watched the vids so clue me if they actually mention watchable t.v. stations as apposed to shows from those stations.

Quick side question: Who is Sev?
Couldn't find any "about me" or anything on his blog but he seems like an insider of some sort?
His blog is interesting.

The video is just a commercial of sorts showcasing the various PS3 entertainment capabilities but it's all music video style and no narration. Nothing is explained about it all all.

This is all you see.

"Shop at the PLAYSTATION Store" starts at 55s in the the video, there's no image clear enough like you see on the pictures he took. i think it's at 59s you can see that blue image.

According to the comment on youtube he got it from the japanese PSN store. Anyone can confirm it?
New PS3 commercial (What you need) this video came out on the japanese psn, I just remastered it in 1080p

HBO would be sweet...

Also, I think they could do it for free with minimal ads, any time I watch LOST on ABC's website I only have to deal with one 30-40 second ad during commercial breaks

Same with CBS and episodes of CSI on their site.

The difference being si they are delayed from original broadcast so that they can make their broadcast ad money.

It suggests a pay per episode formula and shows interest from cable networks to expand beyond cable and Satellite.

I guess that's true, always nice to see big companies realizing the potential of the web.

Yeah and since not a single interesting series is available on ITunes in Europe (yes, there is lost, but only older episodes, which sucks, as the forth is nearly over in the US and didn't even START in Germany) I doubt it'll be much different with PSN...

I just hope the Blu Rays from Lost will be available soon in Germany at last.

Thing is, in Germany there's not much of a "Pay per View" demographic... Only ~3.5m people in Germany have Premiere (our PPV provider) and their programme sucks too. Many US series never make it here or get cancelled shortly after release... ALL series have more than a year delay and their translations suck donkey balls...

I just don't get it, why they can't just let me download a NON synchronized version of the series I watch (Lost, Scrubs and House usually) before the German Episode is aired on Free TV...

Maybe Sonys leverage in the movie and tv-series business will alleviate this problem (which MS has also!!)

Well, since we can all access and buy from the US Store, what's keeping you from grabbing the new Lost episodes when they're released over there? :)

me.

I play video games and watch movies....never touch television
(unless I'm at a bar or a friends house)

I would love to be able to download COMMERCIAL FREE tv shows from psn.
even at $20/month(spent on random shows) it is as cheap or cheaper than cable...but it would have to be commercial free.

Finally seems like Sony is thinking big picture with PSN. One of the first things I thought about were TV shows when the idea of a free PSN was being bandied about in 05 (I think there's a rather long post I made about it back then). There are all sorts of shows that I'd watch on the big screen that it's not worth it to go to NBC.com and stream an episode or d/l one on itunes. The PC moniter is too small for me and the wife to huddle around, and the seating isn't comfortable. Big screen + downloadable shows/movies for a small fee or with limited commercials = win. I'd be able to keep up with Lost, The Office, and HBO shows that we don't get in our cable package (Weeds, Californication, John Adams biography, etc)... Let's put that 250GB HDD to use.
