View Full Version : Suggestion: Support slightly larger avatar resolution.
I'm not familiar with the limitations of the server the E-mpire forums run on, but..
It probably wouldn't debilitate the server if the limitation on our avatar size was increased to 150x150 pixels - it's not as if it's supporting a staggering amount of members' avatar images.
Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Seriously.
We need to see James' glorious goatee more clearly.
Thanks Viper.
I hope.

It's not so much the image size itself that's debilitating to a server but the file sizes.
I'll take it under consideration.

Ive always liked the 100x100, but Im sure Id get used to 150x150 soon enough, or even 120x120. And I could probably put the extra size to good use. It seems like something that would be nice, but we could live without, but also wouldnt be too hard on the servers or our internets or whatever. :\

120x120 or 150x150 would be plenty, I just think 100x100 is a little on the low side. You don't even have to support larger filesizes, just raise the max resolution by a few pixel.

I don't care as much for the avy's ass not supporting stretching the forums to fit the screen and the fact of those stupid ads on the sidebar.

Something else to note regarding avatar dimensions. There is an aesthetic purpose for keeping it at 100 x 100.
Take a look at Seph's post bit (that's the data on the right side). If you'll note that whole cell field fits equally for both the avatar and the full post bit. Expanding the avatar dimensions would add blank space surround the post bit throwing off the aesthetic equality.

I do it just annoys me that my solution is "fixed" every few months and I need to do it all over again.

I see what you mean, but that would be a perfect excuse to add a "Total time spent online" counter, or some icons for various gaming IDs(Live, PSN, Wii) under the IM ones

What do you mean? You just have to subscribe to a filter list, I haven't seen an advert on E-mpire for years

I personally don't think we need bigger avatars. the biggest i'd want would be 120x120. as displayed in mine and Sephs avaters you can get a nice one even using 100x80
Lets not get into the "aesthetics".
That'd make for an entirely different thread.

Bad idea. It might not seem like a large increase in traffic, but with a few thousand page views a day alone it adds up to a massive amount of bandwidth.
