i have a problem with the sound coming from the games on my ps3(i have ut3,gta4,turok, and uncharted). they all sound muffled. like something is blocking them or keeping them from giving me their all. i have it set up with an hdmi cable for 720p an optical cable with dolby digital 5.1 and wireless net. i have it hooked up to a sony surround 5.1. i also have my 360 hooked up the same exact way and it sounds great. any suggestions on why its doing that?

Check your soundsettings if theyre really fitting to your set-up and also check the options from the games.

Cables.
Check each and every one, make sure they are properly plugged.
So many times I got bad sound/ visual because I didn't plug them in fully.

Not possible with an optical cable because of the connection.
Its almost like with HDMI (because that one is digital), you either get a signal or nothing.

Go through your optical audio settings and make sure that the codecs you have selected to output are compatible with your reciever.
The part that doesn't make sense is... your amp is decoding the same codecs from your ps3 as it is for your 360... so they should be identical.

I think it probably has something to do with your amplifier. Check to make sure that the PS3 and 360 signals are played in the exact same way by the amp, sometimes it can have some fancy modes which sound like shit.

Hm
I too have a Sony receiver, and when it decodes multichannel sound via Toslink, a blue lamp lights up (which says "Multi Channel Decoding") and the Display states, what Codec is used (Dolby 3/2.1 or DTS 3/2.1).
Make sure your sound settings in the XMB are set up correctly. (tick all DTS and Dolby selections, as well as the others, your amp supports) Uncharted supports DTS sound, which should work for you too (set this up within the game).

thanks for the thoughts but i've tried all those. my reciever comes up and says dolby3/2.1. i have them both hooked up to a optical splitter and i've tried swapping them and also hooking it directly they all sound the same. i've also tried messing with the settings on the ps3 xmb and if its not dolby 5.1 it only comes up as pcm-48. anything else?
and also when i stream music from it it takes like 5 secs or so for the song to change and if i try to skip it takes even longer than that. just wondering if there is a setting i need to change.

the streaming thing happens to me too.
Its just the Ps3 loading the stream i assume

This is normal... but it is mendable...
I recently switched to Gigabit (wasn't all that expensive... the 5 Port router cost me 30€ and normal Cat5 cables work great) and now, the high latency problem when listening to music (or forwarding videos etc.) is nearly completely gone.
You could go and try to play a Blu Ray or DVD with DTS or AC3 sound and see, if the bitstream is sent correctly (bitstream MUST be activated in the "Blu Ray" options in the XMB!). There, it should sound EXACTLY the same as with the 360 (in case of a DVD), as the sound is not post processed at all, when bitstreaming.

This sounds more and more like a fault in the PS3 hardware to me.

It doesn't make sense for it to be that. It isn't like analog audio where you can easily end up with interference that degrades the quality of the audio. That isn't the case here.
As Segitz said, try the same DVD on both consoles. If there is a difference, then you know something is up as it is the exact same signal that is sent from both consoles, no matter if you use optical or coax/SPDIF.
I too use a sony (800w str-k790) receiver, and I have no problems at all with it.

try getting a new optical cable to see if that fixes it.

Well yeah, that sounds like a broken cable.
Try it with other games, who knows, maybe its just Turok itself. lol

You should let your PS3 reset your audio settings and put it on the bare minimum, then go through all of the options and see which ones work best.
I had sound problems too for a while, I ended up just using the bare minimum and having my receiver simulate surround sound (Sounds even better IMHO) from stereo. I had to do this because I had no room for the center speaker in my 5.1 surround sound setup so I use 4.1, works just fine.

I couldn't disagree with you more on fake quadrophonic sound sounding better than true 5.1, but I do agree that some of the settings may be too much for his amp. Try to only enable some of the codecs in the check box, like only dolby digital, then try only dts, etc. and see if it helps.
