Should be good fun!

Months ago, a rumored PSN release list showed a game called Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty. Since then, we haven't heard much about this potential game, but a recently uncovered Spanish logo suggests that this is the real deal. En Busca Del Tesoro also refers to treasure, and may expand upon the fun pirate themes of Tools of Destruction. According to the Spanish release, this PSN downloadable will provide new adventures for our favorite robot-lombax duo.

Ratchet & Clank Quest for Booty August 21
Insomniac duo's downloadable excursion will arrive on PlayStation 3 online store for $14.99.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Aug 1, 2008 1:41 am CET

Insomniac developers may be pulling all-nighters to finish up work on the company's big holiday release of Resistance 2, but that isn't stopping the studio from offering gamers their annual dose of Ratchet & Clank.

The pair's debut downloadable outing, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty on the PlayStation 3, received an exact release date today on GameSpot's latest episode of On the Spot. The smaller-than-usual-size game will arrive on the PlayStation Store August 21, complete with a smaller-than-usual-size price tag: $14.99.

Picking up after the events of Ratchet & Clank Future, Quest for Booty will put a greater emphasis on puzzle-solving and platforming elements. The game will also incorporate a new light-and-dark gameplay mechanic.

R&C: Quest for Booty Is For Everybody

Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty will be hitting PSN pretty soon. By now, you’re all familiar with the details since its E3 announcement. A short but sweet extended expansion for Tools of Destruction for a low, low price of $15. I got a demo of it today, and while it’s a PSN-only download game, don’t expect the graphics to take a hit, in fact, expect to see some improvements.

It’s a wonder how Insomniac finds the time to make Resistance 2 and sprinkle on a little Ratchet and Clank in the same year. But they did, and boy you really have to hand it to them. Sure Quest for Booty is a short game, around 4 to 5 hours, but it still looks as good as any other game out there. It uses the same engine as Tools of Destruction, which Insomniac knows like the back of their hand, and that allowed the team to add some new lighting and environmental effects for new areas of the game.

Something I didn’t really love about the later Ratchet titles was the focus on weapons. I like more platform-y games. So I was excited to find out there is less emphasis on weapons this time and more placed on platforming and puzzle solving. Ratchet doesn’t even start with a weapon; you have to wack stuff with your wrench early on until you find one.

The level I saw didn’t showcase it, but the theme of the game is about pirates and swashbuckling, so that’s pretty exciting. I mean, pirates are awesome, right?

The gameplay itself is straight-up Ratchet, though. If you know the series, you’ll feel right at home. I was told Insomniac wanted to release this to get people to try Ratchet who didn’t before and who are new to the series. How that translates into the overall difficulty of the game remains to be seen.

Also, there are no trophies in this game, at the time of launch anyway. There’s nothing stopping them from adding them in down the road, however. No saved data info from Tools of Destruction will carry over into Quest for Booty, either. They wanted to make this a completely separate experience.

One little hint was dropped to me about the ending. I had asked if the storyline for Quest for Booty would carry over into the next Ratchet game. I was told you’re going to have to beat the game and find out and that there may be something interesting. Don’t take that as any kind of confirmation, though.

I wish they would offer trophy support right away instead of adding a patch. I may refrain from even playing this game at all until that patch does arrive, but who the hell am i kidding right? I'll play it right when I download it. =/ I hope they do add a patch for trophy support for Tools of Destruction. I'd play through it again. =)

Jay Gee
08-07-2008, 05:37 PM
A four to five hour game shouldn't be too hard to go through again for trophies though. That's at least one or two sit down sessions in a day.

TOD's not gonna see trophies since Insomniac's busy working on R2 and they have their achievment system in-game. If it did happen, it'd most likely follow Drake's footsteps and use the one's already in the game for the trophies.

New Ratchet And Clank In 2009?

New Ratchet And Clank In 2009?

Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty looks awesome, but let’s not forget, it’s an expansion to Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction instead of an entirely new game. A translated version of a news report at www.gamer.nl tells us certain members of the press have finished the upcoming Network expansion for review, and at the end it says there will be a brand new Ratchet & Clank game in autumn of 2009.

We can only hope, but for now we look forward to the aforementioned Quest For Booty and Resistance 2 from Insomniac!

Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty clocks in at 2.3GB

The upcoming PSN-exclusive follow-up to the successful Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction will be available for the masses soon: August 21st, to be exact. Many have been wondering how large the download would be, considering Tools of Destruction took advantage of the incredible space offered by Blu-ray. Those interested in downloading the upcoming game should know that Quest for Booty clocks in at slightly over 2GB, or 2.3GB to be precise.

While that's a large download, that's only slightly larger than most episodes of Qore and a few demos. Hopefully, it'll take longer to play the game (about 3-4 hours) than it does to download it.

Agreed, I love the platforming allot. It reminds me a bit of Jack and Daxter ( the first one of course) and that's a very good thing. I also like the music but the stupid bitch should NEVER've been introduced into the r&c universe, or, she should've died very soon in the game.

Hmm, I got it and beat it today in like 3 hours.

It was fun, but I'd say the 7.5's are justified because the levels in this weren't as fun as levels in previous R&C games. I understand it is like 1/4th the price, but there were a lot of bugs in the game... Definately didn't have the polish it should have.

Still a fun game though.

What bugs? It looks more polished that TOD. I doubt that any bugs present are totally absent in TOD as well.

I think folks are just looking for reasons to slight the game just cuz it's not as grande as it's full course iterations, when it really shouldn't be expected to be as such.

Just to name two off the top of my head.

I saw one of those walker things disappear, then reappear, then disappear again frequently during the part when you are trying to protect the island from Slag's attack.

Also during that part, one of the enemies disappeared on me while I was near the bridge, and then reappeared attacking the door... I had some other things like that happen in the final part of the game as well.

The game is really good, but it is buggy. Not as buggy as Assassin's Creed or Ninja Gaiden 2, but I don't recall seeing disappearing/reappearing enemies in TOD.

Told ya. And I c/s the gamers are too critical comment. It's not just this forum, it's on other forums, reviewers and everywhere. I mean, if the bugs aren't totally killing the experience, completely crashing the game or not extremely consistent, then it shouldn't even be all that worthy of commentary.

I doubt there's any game that is completely bug free, least not from the jump. With patches, I suppose they could possibly wipe them out completely. But if you looking for something wrong for long, you're sure to simultaneously please and disappoint yourself upon your discovery.

Is Insomniac The New Rare?
September 3, 2008, 10:32 pm

[By Anthony]

This article started life as a rant about Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts being a Ratchet rip off. Look what you’ve got now. An article that does speak about said games, but says more about the two companies behind them. I think it’s better for it too. Hit the jump for the monster of a thing.

I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about the new Banjo Kazooie game for the Xbox 360 and although it sounds good, it seems like people are avoiding the fact that on paper it sounds a lot like Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank games. Of course, Rare made Banjo before Insomniac had probably even thought about their Lombax mascot and his tin can sidekick but something about the latest Banjo game makes me think of Insomniac and Ratchet & Clank.

It might seem unfair to compare the two games side by side. Sure, like all platformers they do share certain similarities (like platforms, maybe?) but even just seeing the name of Rare’s latest on paper makes me think they we’re highly influenced by Insomniac when creating their game. The subtitle, ‘Nuts & Bolts’ is what you collect in the Ratchet & Clank series and it is this not so subtle difference which lead me to write this piece.

Pretty much all my gaming life has been spent with Sony consoles, and not once (well maybe when Dead Rising came out) did it cross my mind that I should buy a 360. This might seem biased, and a little unfair but there’s logic behind it. The 360 did not have many original ideas. There I said it, Microsoft’s console did not appeal to me because I could get what I needed elsewhere. There might have been a few games that made me stop and think, but seriously most of the ideas were rehashes of something that had already been successfully achieved on the PS2. It seems to me Microsoft like to remake things, or re-imagine them if you will. Rare is a Microsoft owned developer and I think that part of the reason behind the changes made to Banjo are because of Sony and Insomniac’s success with the Ratchet franchise. Microsoft want to emulate that success and get those gamers. In my honest opinion they will never achieve that because to do this they would have to choose between hardcore and casual. They have tried and failed numerous times to balance the two but have never seemed to do it right. You can’t blame them for trying though.

The concept behind ‘N&B’ sounds quite cool actually, the idea of making your own vehicles allowing you to solve things within levels does intrigue me, but will it work? From all accounts it works well but has a rather steep learning curve. Something which Ratchet, for the most part, doesn’t have. Surely platformers are there to cater for the masses? They are meant to appeal to kids and adults alike, something Insomniac can pull off very successfully. It’s simple and effective and keeps people playing for ages. I don’t see the same thing happening with Banjo.

Rare have apparently remedied the fact that some users may not want or be able to create their own vehicles and have supplied sample ones. Something that the majority of players won’t want to do. They’ll want to make their own cool stuff and use that, but if the learning curve is too steep then they won’t want to, which will cause frustration and ultimately said player will stop playing the game. This type of frustration is usually not seen whilst playing Ratchet (or any other platformer) as it is simple and effective. It gives the player what they want and does not complicate the situation, something that usually arises when customization gets thrown in to an already great game. As a wise man once said, don’t fix what’s not broken.

Banjo Kazooie was one of the first 3D platformers and the game soon became one of the classics for N64 fans. Ratchet is the game that seems to have filled the void of Banjo since it’s last outing, not only that I think Insomniac have bettered Rare. Of course Insomniac have been influenced, like every other developer, by similar games in the same genre. Banjo must have been an influence on many a platformer, but now it looks like the tables have turned. Rare are not as good as they used to be and they are now taking notes from the rest of the platformers on the market.

It’s a shame really that Rare seem to have run out of ideas and are stuck making hats for Pinata’s. As David Reeves, when quoting Bob Dylan, said: “The times they are a changing”. That is something that Rare have obviously had to deal with. I think that being influenced is something that happens to everyone (even me) but to seemingly copy and paste ideas from a competitor seems unethical and arrogant.

Thankyou.

I can feel the angry mobs’ torches getting closer but I do believe when they read the text and understand my ideas they might not agree but hopefully will be respectful of my opinion.
