IGN: What is the story behind Disgaea 3?

Souhei Niikawa: I planned to make the story of Disgaea 3 as stupid as Disgaea 1 was, since Disgaea 2 was comparatively serious. I chose the school setting this time to get a different kind of story out of the game. By using a school setting, which is familiar to everyone, and adding a little taste of the Netherworld, I thought that I would be able to create funny and interesting events and game systems that will draw laughter. I was able to put in many factors that are only found in a school setting, and I am very satisfied with how it turned out.

IGN: Who are the main characters within Disgaea 3?

Souhei Niikawa: The four main characters are Mao, Raspberyl, Almaz, and Sapphire.
Mao is the son of the Overlord, Dean of The Nether Institute, Evil Academy. Raspberyl is Mao's nemesis, and the biggest delinquent (A student that does good things) in the history of the Academy. Almaz is a self-proclaimed hero and Sapphire is a princess with a fighter's spirit, and both of them came to the Netherworld to defeat the Overlord. The story carries on with different stories between every character. I struggled in wrapping up the story in the end, since they all have very strong personalities. (Laugh)
Characters other than the main characters are also very strange. I don't think there is one normal character in the game.

IGN: Will there be any cameos from previous Disgaea titles? If so, can you tell us if favorites like Etna, Laharl, Adell or Rozalin will be included in the game?

Souhei Niikawa: Yes, there will be one in the game, but let's keep that a surprise…
You can actually tell which one it will be by watching the opening animation. (Laugh) There will be more characters in the additional downloadable content, which you will not see in the packaged version. So please keep yourself interested.

IGN: What changes have been made to the battle system? Are there any new super attacks that can be launched by stacking characters and monsters on top of each other?

Masahiro Yamamoto: To begin, new systems relating to monster units were added.
Those include: "Magichange System", where a monster transforms into a weapon and unites with a humanoid unit, and "Monster Receive", which a monster will knock a unit that is thrown at them further along.

Another one to name would be the "Skill Merging System". When you use two special skills against the same enemy in a row, the two skills will unite to inflict more damage.

The very familiar system throughout the Disgaea series, Lift and Throw, has also evolved in its own way. You can now do a "Stack Attack", where you can throw units from anywhere in the tower, and use special skills while in a tower formation.
You can also designate the tower to a unit's destination, and climb the tower.

IGN: Can you tell us what the Geo Block is and how it will affect gameplay?

Masahrio Yamamoto: Geo Blocks are the 3D form of the traditional Geo Symbols.
Stacking the Geo Blocks to get multiple effects and Standing on top of the Blocks are possible.
Also, you can get rid of the blocks by adjoining more than two Geo Blocks of the same color.
It is possible to create chain reactions, like in puzzle games, by using the disappearing Blocks.

This system added a concept of having heights on a battle map, and being able to move around to higher locations.

IGN: Have you changed Geo Panels, Geo Symbols or Geo Monsters in any way? Are there new effects or elements related to these mechanics?

Souhei Niikawa: The controls relating to Geo Panels are basically the same as the prior version of the game. However, I can say that the system has changed drastically, considering the prior question on the new Geo Block system, since they are a part of the Geo System and work with the Geo Panels.

IGN: How has the Dark Assembly changed within Disgaea 3? Are there any other changes made to the standard hub system?

Masahiro Yamamoto: The "Classroom System" was brought in as a very significant system for Disgaea 3. The team members have their own seats to create a classroom. They may join clubs that will provide various special effects, and the growth of the characters will depend on the homeroom teacher. You may increase the chance of the characters performing a Team Attack during battle by seating them together. This system has a significant role in making an efficient battle plan.

The options for the Dark Assembly are included in this "Classroom System". The assembly will be held during homeroom in this game, and other options are uniquely re-named into something that has to do with school. For example, new characters are introduced as transfer students (Back door admissions), and deleted characters are considered to be expelled students.

IGN: How has the Item World changed in Disgaea 3? Are there worse threats than Item World Pirates this time around?

Masahiro Yamamoto: Various new factors have been added, such as:
An "Event Floor", where an event will randomly occur when you use a specified number of members on the floor.
A "Level Sphere", where a bonus gets added when an item levels up after clearing or skipping a stage while a character is lifting another character.
An "Enemy Base Panel", where the enemies keep appearing.

Another significant new system is "Reverse Pirating". You can use a pirate ship that you get after defeating the pirates to conduct pirating operations yourself. It's an essential system for the hardcore gamers, since they may find Innocents that can only be found while pirating. Of course, the difficulty level is very high.

IGN: Are you augmenting the shop system in any way? Will there be any new ways to increase your favorable rating with shop keepers in Disgaea 3?

Masahrio Yamamoto: The biggest change that was made in this system is that of the "Evility Lab", a place to purchase Evilities and special skills. You may purchase a character's special evilities and skills, such as "Fire" and "Blade Rush", by using the Mana you acquire after defeating enemies. These changes will allow you to customize your characters even more than you used to before.

IGN: How many classes of characters will be available in the game?

Masahrio Yamamoto: There are 50 different jobs, including the general ones. If you count the classes within the jobs, there are about 300 general characters.

IGN: Disgaea has been well known as a niche title for the hardcore strategy user. Will Disgaea 3 be any easier for newcomers to the franchise to get into?

Souhei Niikawa: Well, I'm not very sure. This game includes many factors that make it an acquired taste, so the people who want to casually enjoy the game might stay away from it.
However, there are many that play the game just to enjoy the story and a few systems, rather than playing it thoroughly. I hope for the beginners to enjoy this game as well, since every system is very easy to follow from the beginning to end. Since there are not many PS3 titles, I would want those people who own a PS3 and have not experienced the Disgaea series to take this opportunity to enjoy the game. I'm sure that they definitely will be sucked into the world of Disgaea.

IGN: How are you using the disc space of the Blu-ray to bring Disgaea 3 to life? Are there any secrets that you'll include on the disc, such as the older titles or other bonuses?

Souhei Niikawa: We are using PS3 specifications to better the playing environment for Disgaea 3 players. It focuses on a stress-free environment (such as less loading time); since this title usually requires an extended amount of time to play. There are other, very trivial factors to the game that utilize the performance of the PS3, which are impossible to do with the PS2. There are no hidden tricks to the disc itself, but we are planning to issue additional options that can be played only by the people who have purchased Disgaea 3.This game is packed with new and added characters and systems that can also be enjoyed by the old fans and reckless, hardcore players. Please look forward to this title.

Haha awesome.

Light hearted parody games are great. I still remember laughing so hard at the Power Rangers parody in Disgaea 1.

Disgaea 3: online gaming mode and new characters in Asia via DLC

Posted Aug 29th 2008 8:30PM by Alan Tsang
Filed under: Game Patches

Siliconera noticed a little new add-on for Disgaea 3 that provides an optional online gaming mode. You pick either beginner, intermediate or advanced difficulty level and then you are sent to a special version of the item world. Specific criteria must be met in order for a gate and its respective enemy gate keeper to appear. Ten floors must be completed before you are ranked based on moves you've made and how efficient you were with your characters and resources.

This all sounds rather complicated, but the reward is a special character called Angel Solider that specializes in bows and staff. Their native evilty is called Angelic Protection which reduces non-elemental damage to a nearby ally by 50%. The price for this upgrade is $6.19 SGD (about $4.30 USD).

In other Disgaea 3 news, Yukimaru and Tink from Disgaea 2 and Prier of La Pucelle Tactics are the newest downloadable characters for the game in Japan. They cost 200 yen (about $1.50) each. Keep in mind, none of this has been announced for the US yet, but we shall keep our fingers crossed and hopefully hear something soon. We'll keep you updated!

for goodness sake when you play it, tell everyone your experience with it. everyone goes on about PJM, but this series has that beat (IMO). once you get past the graphics, you find yourself hooked

Another Take

from Daemon Hatfield

Take it from a Disgaea fan: this game is fantastic. I've sunk countless hours into the first two games, the portable versions, and now I'm hooked on part three. Sure, it doesn't take advantage of the PS3's graphical capabilities, but it looks like an attractive PS2 game -- and that's not bad. There's enough depth here to drown in for the rest of the year. Plus, it's got that quirky Disgaea humor, great anime artwork and a catchy soundtrack. Bottom line: if you're a Disgaea fan, you need to own this and if you like strategy games you should at least give it a look.

But yeah, disgaea is pretty awesome...I just wish they would have at least tried to improve the graphics!!!! I mean sheeesh--Odin' Sphere (great game btw) looks better than this:huh:

That just would've been nice..I mean, I'm already gonna spend at least 100 hours with this title as is;)

2 wasn't as good as 1, so i'd skip straight to this like you said. from what i've read (regardless of score mainly because of graphics) this game is a return to the best Disgaea

Just bought 1+3 today actually. Not arrived yet though.

Not sure if Disgaea 3 is my thing but sheer novelty of an exclusive PS3 jRPG, good grief.

And I actually enjoyed Enchanted Arse on PS3 so you know, has to be better than that. :)

It is a strategy RPG so it is already from a sub-genre that doesn't have a lot of games. But I always love strategy RPG's and loved Disgaea 1 (missed 2 because lack of funds).

Anyways, I will be getting this soon. I was supposed to get it today but I couldn't.

Disgaea 3 review

If you're a fan of the Disgaea series, you'll soon note that Disgaea 3's plot isn't anything that hasn't been offered up by the franchise in previous installments.

But Disgaea 3 manages to save itself from becoming a simple rehash of the original through Nippon Ichi's trademark charm and originality, not to mention a slew of innovative features both on and off of the battlefield.

The third installation in the popular turn-based Disgaea franchise follows cocky young demon Mao, heir to the Netherworld throne and number one honour student at the devilish Evil Academy - an institute where ditching class and failing tests is rewarded, and only the very worst delinquents show up to school on time or even *gasp* perform chores and extra credit!

It's this type of quirky, tongue-in-cheek atmosphere that acts as one of Disgaea 3's biggest draws, as the game offers up an interesting tale cast with hilarious yet endearing characters painted with Nippon Ichi's trademark charm and personality.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice

The first thing anyone's bound to notice about Disgaea 3 is its striking visual resemblance to its predecessors as, quite honestly, it looks almost exactly the same as its PS2 brethren. There are some beautiful new animations and quirky new character sprites both in and out of battle, but we remember being pretty taken aback when we found out that this was a Playstation 3 title.

Thankfully, the Disgaea franchise has never been reliant on its graphical prowess, and in quite a few instances the dated visuals work in the game's favour by offering familiar, friendly environments full of life that never have to worry about slow-down - even when you've just pulled off the most ridiculous Ultimate Attack imaginable.

Now, to what Disgaea is really about: the battles! Disgaea 3's turn-based combat proves as addictive and fresh as ever through a mixture of both old and new gaming mechanics. Disgaea 3 keeps the franchises' trademark randomly-generated battlefields, all the while adding new features such as the Geo-Block system and destructible environments.

If you've played any of the previous Disgaea titles, you'll feel right at home in the midst of battle. The game's interface is also a treat, making level-grinding less of an issue through some of the game's newer offerings, such as a greatly improved interface or the opportunity to earn new special attacks and evil abilities (or as they're constantly referred to, "Evilities") off the battlefield by simply purchasing and assigning attacks, spells and skills to your units.

If you're a fan of the Disgaea series, you'll soon note that Disgaea 3's plot isn't anything that hasn't been offered up by the franchise in previous installments.

Disgaea 3

Verdict

In conclusion, there are only a few things that I can definitively say: if you've never played a Disgaea title before, then head out and grab Disgaea 3. For veterans of the series... yeah, it's more of the same, but with this franchise, when has that ever been a bad thing? Disgaea 3 still manages to carry itself with enough charm and self-referential humor to make it stand out in a wave of "next-gen" role playing games and turn based strategy titles, and is definitely worth a look from hardcore Overlords to fledgling demon wannabes.

3 1/2 out of 5

I don't care how low IGN or wherever rated it, Disgaea 3 is a great game. I love SRPG's, plus throw in the oddball humor and really strange twisted (in a funny way) storyline and you have Disgaea.

Hmm, I didn't even know it was out, I even glanced through the PS3 section of Best Buy 2 days ago and didn't see it (I do that often cause I suck at remembering release dates), guess I'll have to see if I can find it tomorrow.

I never played the first one (never heard of it 'till this game was announced), but I love strategy RPG's.

what?? the graphics are good.
anyway, looks like a great game & I like the idea of the netherworld school.

Edit: I don't have high standards for gfx in games, aslong as it looks stylish without noticeable jaggies. Also, I'm a fan of sprite on 3d gfx, no matter tha quality. Though if they didn't put in as much effort as they could've then I can see your point.

It is a music/entertainment franchise store.

Looking at the Wiki thought it says it is only in the eastern part of the US, so I guess you probably won't have it in Indiana.

Seeing as there are like 5 of them within walking distances of each other in Downtown Toronto, I thought it was a massive franchise, but I guess not lol.

I don't like paying shipping fees and I live in an apartment complex and I don't want boxes sitting outside waiting for someone to grab it (I don't really know my neighbors so it's hard to completely trust them), granted most of the time they don't leave them sitting, but it happens.
