View Full Version : I modded my Sixaxis with a RGB LED

As some of you may know, I nearly killed my Sixaxis, when I tried to open it, because I spilled juice over it...
Well, since it already was a bit damaged (the sucky screws Sony uses are... well sucky), I and a friend used it as a test subject to add full color RGB LEDs to our pads...
It is quite a simple procedure actually (we even used the 5mm ones, as they are easier to handle) and it only took us about an hour to do it.
Well, long story short, we are done now and I took 2 videos showing it off^^ The quality sucks BIG TIME, but it works.
The LED is a 5v one, but the pad (at the connectors we used) only puts out ~2.8V, so the LED isn't as bright as it could be. The LEDs swap color themselves (and cost staggering 1.25€^^) which looks really cool.
Here are the two vids (taken with my crappy cameraphone (windows mobile my ass^^ that ain't mobile at all!)

(second ones takes ages to convert... will be added later)

Is there any parameter for when the colors change? Or does it just go from one to the next successively the whole time?

does the light turn off when the controller is turned off? because afaik, the wiring for the mod was that it would always be on, the only way to get it to be on with the controller, was to wire the V[in] to the indicator LEDs
i was going to do this with my controller, but, i have the ones with the newer daughterboards which don't have the option to add this

I just switches continuosly... You can make it change on different voltage with a different LED, and you could do make it switch to different colors when different LEDs are switched (i.e. the 1-4 LEDS), but that would have been MUCH more work, but it is possible.

It switches off, when you turn off the pad. I used the +2.8V from the motion sensors connector. When you plug in the battery it goes on for a split second and it also stays on when the pad loads (not switched on, i.e. all 4 leds blink). I find that quiete strange actually, as this means, that the motion sensor gets power when the pad is off and only charging.
And with the newer daughterboards... Well, you can use any open connector that gives you the correct voltage and thus nearly any "switched" connection should work. The problem is (compared to my newer DS3), that the "optical rubber" beneath the PS Button (on the newer pads, it is black and doesn't let thru light and thus needs to be changed) is different. I friend of mine will do his soon and I'll post our experiences then. He has a new Sixaxis (GT5P bundle).

you did yours on a ds3?
i have a ds3 lying around
guess i should pick up an led soon and some solder. Oh, did you add an extra resistor or not?

No, it was my old Sixaxis, but we will take a look into the DS3 this week.
We didn't use a resistor, as the LED is a 5v one and the connection we used only gives us 2.8v, so if we used one, the LED wouldn't light up anymore...
But it depends on what LED you use. My store (www.led1.de) shows per each LED what resistor you should or shouldn't use, etc...

cools.
ill probably do this at school, they have the better soldering irons there aswell as a few multimeters and even some leds

Nice...looks bad ass. But lol @ spilled juice on it. I could just imagine. "Nooooooo.....rushes to get paper towels."

I have a little one that spilled juice on my sixaxis and I 've been meaning to clean it up myself. Looks interesting. Got a little tutorial on how u did this?
