Sony voted more innovative than Apple
Monday 16-Jun-2008 2:42 PM Survey puts Sony top, Apple second and Nintendo seventh
26 Comments
Remember Sony's Walkman brand? It used to be synonymous with portable music players until Apple's iPod wiped the floor with it, yet it's Sony that's come out on top of a recent survey on brand innovation.

Apple had to settle for second in the list after the Incite survey asked 500 people between the ages of 18 and 65 to name the brands they consider to be the most innovative.

Nintendo, renowned for innovation among the gaming community, ironically placed the lowest out of the three major console makers, slotting in at seventh below Microsoft at third. It seems that, despite selling a billion Wii consoles a day, Nintendo is yet to defeat Sony's brand power among the masses.

According to the concluding report (via Brand Republic), 74 percent of people like brands that are 'constantly moving forward', but 60 percent however opposed the creation of something new for the sake of it.

The top 20 brands the survey considered to be innovative are:

1. Sony
2. Apple
3. Microsoft
4. Virgin
5. Nokia
6. Dyson
7. Nintendo
8. Tesco
9. Sky
10. Panasonic
11. Honda
12. Samsung
13. Google
14. Phillips
15. Dell
16. Toyota
17. eBay
18. Amazon
19. BT
20. Toshiba

Not really that surprising when you think about it, Sony and MS both have more products that they can innovate with then Nintendo.

This was reported several week ago I thought.

Venom pointed out how flawed it is. Not to say Sony or MS don't innovate, just they have more products with which to innovate with. If this were console specific, then we'd have a problem.

Woo, go Sony.

I recently checked out a article on the new HD upcoming cameras and most professionals picked the Sony brand.

I think Sony pwns most in the case of cameras.
I am in that field (film and video) and I gotta say Sony are amazing cameras, closely followed by Canon.
Sony has a nice interface, nice portability and the best quality though Canon is renowned for easier interface than Sony's cameras and is probably close quality wise.

Umm Apple really doesn't innovate all that much so I'm not surprised. Is making a phone with functions that Blackberry already had for years (other than a touchscreen function) really that impressive. Is an extremely thin laptop incredible? Not when you look at its specs or lack of disc drive. An extremely restricted music player that plays from one single type of music file instead of being open and ready for the many different file types that exist?

Don't get me wrong, I like Apple and am typing on a MacBook at the moment...and they make some cool products but I wouldn't give them all the credit a normal Starbucks hipster likes to alot to them. Innovative just doesn't equal Apple if you ask me.

I can vouch for this. The FX1 and Z1 series are amazing.

Even their VX series of cameras are amazing. I have run a business on those cameras for 6 years.

Even their higher end cameras are amazing. While I was at E3, a dude from Fox set up his camera next to me. It was a 1080p wet dream that recorded it's video straight to a Blu-Ray disc. I almost had to get a change of clothes after playing with it for a minute.

You just have to watch out for there CD's that install hidden malware on to your computer. And not to sell Japanese PSP's to Europe for fear of getting sued out the asshole. :-p
