And to think people doubted it would sell well.

Konami has revealed that Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has sold over one million units in Europe in its first week of release.

The publisher has also said that the limited edition of the PlayStation 3 exclusive has sold out – all 25,000 units.

"The Metal Gear Solid series has again proved its huge potential, and we are delighted with the fantastic response the game has enjoyed at retail," commented Martin Schneider, sales and marketing director for Konami in Germany.

"We are extremely pleased with the positive feedback we have received from retail and consumers alike, and will keep satisfying their needs with updates to the game's 'Extra' option, and via new content to Metal Gear Online," he added.

Who doubted it would sell? I think many suggested it won't have legs but actual sales were expected. Or do you mean that it won't sell as well as GTAIV did?

Also, understand that is retail, not consumers....yet.

Yeye! Go MGS!

According to VGChartz, MGS4, in it's first 3 days to end the week for June 8 - 14, sold 1.4 million worldwide.

So if it has already hit 1 million in the first week in Europe alone now then that means MGS4 should be doing rather well for itself. Really damn well actually. At least much better than I was expecting it to sell with the relatively laggy and expensive rate the PS3 goes at...

I hope it reaches 10 million cause it deserves it.

Back in November when the Reuters story that the producer Ryan Payton said that MGS4 needs to sell 1 million day one to be profitable there people doubting it could sell 1 million in the first month. Most believe because of the sales of the PS3 at the time that it wouldn't sell well either. Though this was mostly game forum people but there were a couple journalist who also doubt it to.

Ah. I think at the time their fears based on install base were valid IF (don't forget the IF here, I know somebody is going to reply and completely miss the IF) the PS3 remained on the same sales course it had at the time.

It didn't, specifically in Europe. PS3 install base in Europe is over 1 million greater than the US install base and it launched much later. 75% of the PS3's top 20 best selling games sold more in Europe than in America.

I thought the PS3 has been on the same sales course for a while?

I haven't noticed any big rate change until MGS4's opening week. But I haven't been following any changes too particularly either.

I guess like you're saying Europe is the big point here.

The worldwide sales prior to last holiday for PS3 were quite bad. It was underselling the Gamecube up to that point and had just 2 million selling titles (both launch and one was a bundled title).

At that point Europe was doing better than America and Japan but it's doing a whole lot better globally this year than last year with Europe being the biggest player.

Yea, it could be that. I have seen people surprised to see MGS series sell how much it does. There has been some that thought prior titles sold less then a million they think it's a niche title. But enough with ignorant people I really want to know how it'll continue to sell because that what really matters. I've seen quite a few ads for it.

It was considered niche for two reasons. Sales have slipped the past 2 titles suggesting only core fans enjoy the series. Review scores for the game has shown some range....either they love it = 100. Or they don't really care for it = 80.

It's this slipping of sales (even on a 120 million selling console), initially low PS3 sales and love it or hate it attitude that gave MGS4 some varying speculation regarding success.

As Viper noted above, this is shipped, not sold, but looks like it's over 3 million already worldwide.

Make it 3 mil and 1, since I bought mine yesterday, and Gamestop needs to replace it pronto :)

June 26, 2008 - With Metal Gear Solid 4 confirmed at half a million sales in Japan and one million in Europe, the big question is, just how many copies has the game sold overall. While we don't have sales figures just yet, we do know the game's shipped number: three million.

Famitsu.com, in its coverage from a Sony investor meeting in Tokyo today, reported that the game has topped this milestone in worldwide shipped units. Speaking at the meeting, Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai also noted that the game helped shift hardware.

Games were put a bit on the back burner for this particular briefing though, as Hirai announced a number of non-game initiatives for the PS3 and PSP, including new video and news services.
